'Pacific Rim' Is The Perfect Robot Porn For the Summer of 2013

Pacific Rim is an incredible giant robot movie
Forget those live alien robots that change form, that are from another planet whose movies have them all squeaky clean.  Forget about those movies you saw when Godzilla teams up with Jet Jaguar or when Johnny Sokko commands his giant robot to beat up giant monsters.

In fact, after watching Pacific Rim, it's hard to think these classic giant robot movies even rated up there in your head.  But as wee little ones, with nothing better to latch on to to spur the imagination, I cannot dismiss the predecessors of Pacific Rim.

If you needed a giant robot fix over the years, you had to endure with great patience what was provided.

In a way, they paved the way for Guillermo del Toro to be allowed to get the financing to produce PacRim, and I'm glad this all came to be.

Pacific Rim got me thinking about this real-life Gundam in Japan

Obvious technological limitations, cost factors and other issues kept genre movies with giant robots at a minimum.  That and writers, directors and cast had to look out for their careers and steer clear of this kind of acting fodder.  (At least back then, they did.)

But nowadays, after what Gareth Edwards did with desktop software in his bedroom to make his movie, Monsters, the technology limitation no longer seems to be there.  Hell, even The Asylum Production company that does knock offs can do giant robots these days.

I'm not knocking the efforts of these previous eras, or severely budget-limited efforts.

But I must say that Guillermo del Toro raised the bar pretty high with his vision of what giant robots and Kaiju can do to each other.

But from the past, there are times and or moments that call to us or stick in our memories.

You can never dismiss Jet Jaguar
And because the live-action fare are so limited, I have included some offerings in this list that come from the animated world.  To be honest, the animated world also helped spark many of an imagination.  Did it not?

So do you remember the cargo loader from Aliens?  OK, that might be stretching it a bit.  And I'm not labelling this list like calling it a list of "10 best Giant Robot Movies."  That's akin to calling it the "10 Most Tolerated Giant Robot Movies that were allowed to be made" category.

But here is a list of Giant Robot Offerings.  This list was started with the obvious that was in my head, Johhny Sokko and his Giant Robot, and most of these.  Some research pulled up a few othe worthy contenders.

Voltron defended the universe... but could he take on Pacific Rim?

Hey!  Wait-a-minute!  What ever happened to that Voltron movie that had the concept art floating around?

What ever happened to that VOLTRON movie we heard about?

Digital Trends recently asked producer Charles Roven (Man of Steel, The Dark Knight films) about the state of the Voltron movie.  he said that Voltron lives in the "same space" as Transformers and Pacific Rim.  They haven't pulled a good enough story together to make it stand apart from those aforementioned projects.  So for the moment, it's in limbo.
