'Breaking Bad's' "Granite State" Has Some Cold Scenes

We just watched the encore from last week's episode of Breaking Bad...

Did you hear that Breaking Bad won Emmys for Best Drama and Best Supporting Actress (Anna Gunn).

SPOILERS

Breaking Bad recap

Despite the horrors from last episode, things get no better in the "Granite State."  This was more of a "beginning of the end" episode for Walt and Jesse, while Todd reaffirms why we should be very scared of this cold and calculating character.

-

Saul is on the run

We open the episode to Saul's relocation man, Ed (Robert Forster), taking pics of Saul (Bob Odenkirk) for his own relocation.  Saul is making a break for it before he gets his ass dragged into the mix that is Walter White's (Bryan Cranston) legal storm.

Ed has to hide Saul for a few days while he works on his new identity (in Nebraska???).  But Saul will have a roomie while waiting... in the form of an agitated Walter White.

-

We watch the feds taking Marie (Betsy Brandt) home, but they arrive to a ransacked house, because Todd (Jesse Plemmons) and his cronies went looking for the video evidence that Jesse (Aaron Paul) filmed for the late Hank Schrader (Dean Norris).

Jesse is in his below deck cell... it looks like he might actually be thinking of breaking out.

Bob Odenkirk and Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad, a recap

Dick head... I mean Walt asks Saul for a list of hit-men.  Hit-men for Todd, his Uncle Jack and his men.  Walt's on a revenge mission now.

Saul doesn't know anyone for Walt's list but he let's Walt know that the feds will go after Skylar (Anna Gunn) with Walt missing, despite that crazy phone call he made to her in the last episode, trying to get her off the hook.  Saul tells him her best chance to get past this is that he should stay and turn himself in.

But Walter is still ranting that "What I do, I do for my family."  Because he wants to get what money he has to his family.  He wants to take back the money from Jack's group, for his family.  He seems to think he can get his $70M back.

And Walt wants Saul to go with him.  Saul says no, and in the middle of his "It's not over till I say it's over" line, Walt starts coughing on his cancer.  And Saul slinks out of the room.

Walts hide out in New Hampshire in Breaking Bad

Ed drops off "Mr Lambert" (Walt) to his new New Hamshire residence.  A shack pretty much set back in the 60's with no phone, no internet, no cable, no nuthin.

And yet the a-hole says he has business to do.  Ed tries to convince him, being that his face is on national television, to not leave the place.

So there's Walt, isolated from the world, with his barrel of money.

But Walt, being the dumba** he is, grabs a few wads of money, his coat and his Heisenberg hat (moron) and heads to that "one-horse" town down the road.  Or tries to, until he starts hacking up out there in the snow-covered landscape.

-

Ed is delivering lots of newspapers to Walt.  He tells him that Sky is working a taxi dispatch job, using her maiden name, the house became a tourist attraction of sorts so a fence is around it.

And these two are self-administering a chemo treatment to Walt.

Walt's isolation is getting to him, as he finds himself offering Ed an extra $10k to stay longer.

Walt asks Ed if he'd give his money to his family once he's dead.  Ed's answer isn't as forthcoming as it could be.  (Will Walt kill Ed now?)

Walt's weight loss is demonstrated by his wedding ring falling off this thinning finger while he slept.  His coughing is getting worse.

GOOD.  (Sorry, apologize for that editorial outburst)

We spend some quality time with Walter up in the hills of NH, hearing the chill of the wind in the trees, the white snow-covered ground, and Walt's desperation as he packs up an Ensure box full of money.

Skylar, Todd and Lydia

Skylar is grilled by the feds but she honestly does not have much to give up on Walt.

And there we are, Sky at home later that night, the feds watching her house.

But she has visitors in ski masks (Todd).  He threatens Sky to not say anything about Lydia in any conversation.  (BTW: This is one hell of a break out role for Jesse Plemmons.)

Todd meets with Lydia in a restaurant, and she's doing that bullshit paranoia thing, sitting at another table, back to back.

She's about to blow him off when he tells her he has 92% blue meth.  That stops her in her tracks.

Jesse, The Coldness That is Todd

Jesse Plemmons in Breaking Bad

Todd delivers some extra food to Jesse since his last cook was in the high 90's.

It seems that Jesse has actually grown a pair and tries to escape.  He actually gets out of the cage, but they snag him before he can escape the compound.

Todd Kills Andrea in Breaking Bad

For his penalty, Todd takes Jesse to Andrea's house, goes up to the door, gets her outside the house and after coldly looking around inside the house, he turns and puts a bullet in the back of Andrea's head.

-

Flynn, Walt and The DEA

RJ Mitte in Breaking Bad

Flynn (Walt Jr.) White (RJ Mitte) gets a call in school about "Marie," but it's dumba** Walt, calling.

He tells Flynn he's sending him $100k to his friend, but it's for him and Skylar.

But Flynn snaps, yelling into the phone that he doesn't care, that he killed Uncle Hank and asks if he knows what he did to Sky.  He hangs up the phone, screaming, "Just die already."

Then Walt calls the DEA from New Hampshire.  He gets a drink, then hears his ex-partner on TV, defending himself about having been associated with Walter and watches him lying about what little Walter had to do with the creation of their, well, his company, Grey Matter.

And something goes off in his head...  You can see it in his eyes, but I can't tell what.

The local law enforcement show up at the bar, but he's gone.

Thoughts on Breaking Bad
This is how we end the penultimate episode with Walter White doing that which is not in his best interest.  Again.

He's imbalanced.  He wants his family to have his money.  He wants revenge from Jack's gang for killing Hank.

Jesse Plemmons portrayal of Todd is one hell of a breakout role for him, from that usual, midwestern role I've seen him play previously.

Next week, we see the season previews we've been teased by for almost a full year, in the series finale of Breaking Bad.

OMG, wth will we ever watch that's as good as this show, once it's gone?

AMC has been forcing Low Winter Sun on Breaking Bad viewers, attempting to make us stick around during the episode for previews.  Making us sit through 'Sun' until Talking Bad comes on.  But that show hasn't grabbed me.  I haven't even looked to see if AMC's tactics have helped the ratings.

All I'll really have is Jax's fight in Sons of Anarchy.

Vince Gilligan says the series finale is titled "Felina," an anagram for Finale.  And the clue for next week, is his usual curious clue:  "Woodworking."

Sigh.

Remember, AMC has an a huge Breaking Bad Marathon starting on Wednesday.
