'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Premiere

'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Premiere review

The Vampire Diaries returned for its 5th season premiere, titled "I Know What You Did Last Summer," bringing with it mostly old characters and a few new characters.  But most of all, a few new situations.

Spoilerish review:

The episode picked up after a summer of fun that the characters enjoyed.  Mostly, except, maybe Catherine, who has spent the summer as a human, after having "the cure" forced down her throat.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) in 'The Vampire Diaries'

Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) have gone to college, but now without its own mysteries.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is left baby sitting Jeremy back at home, Catherine is scrambling around the fringes, desperate and scared.

Matt (Zach Roerig) spent his summer with Rebekah (Claire Holt).  Ya, who'd a thunk?

And Stefan (Paul Wesley) is having a pickle of a time under the lake locked in a safe, drowning over and over while Silas runs around looking like him.

And Silas isn't laying low, pretending to be Stefan, but rather, is running around in a rather overbearing.

Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) in 'The Vampire Diaries'

Oh, and though dead, Bonnie (Kat Graham) is still floating around, where Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is the only one who can see her.

The season premiere helped us catch up on what everyone had done, and what's happening to them now.

Elena and Caroline already have problems at college because there's a vampire problem at the campus.

Damon and Jeremy ended up dealing with the usual Catherine noise (When is she going to die already?) and trying to deal with Silas's overbearing siege on the town.

Meanwhile, poor Stefan is dealing with drowning over and over and day dreaming of conversations with Damon and Elena.

The fifth season of Vampire Diaries has kicked off more of the same.  Adventures and challenges for our cast of favorite characters.  But now, with Silas in the mix, well, for now, that's the big issue to tackle.  And he's not holding back any punches.

It will be interesting to see how they deal with Silas and what the girls at college are going to do.

(AH, college... a new scene to introduce new faces, new scenes and lots of cheerleaders.)
