NBC SETS RICH SUMMER SCRIPTED AND ALTERNATIVE PREMIERE SLATE

Six Original Scripted Series Mark the Most for Any Broadcast Network in 21 Years

“The Night Shift,” “Undateable” and “Crossbones” Arrive in May, “Taxi Brooklyn” Debuts in June, and “Welcome to Sweden,” “Working the Engels” and “Food Fighters” Premiere in July

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — March 26, 2014 — Continuing NBC’s summer dominance, which for the past three years has been led by “America’s Got Talent,” the network spreads its wings to bring a content-rich summer schedule to build off strong anchor shows that also include the emerging hit “American Ninja Warrior” and returning favorite “Last Comic Standing.”

Six original scripted summer series — the most of any broadcast network in more than 20 years — as well as a new original alternative series will join the line-up as the network continues to have strong original programing year-round rather than just during the September-May season.

Scripted series receiving their launch dates are “The Night Shift,” “Undateable,” “Crossbones,” “Taxi Brooklyn,” “Working the Engels” and “Welcome to Sweden,” as well as new alternative series “Food Fighters.”

Premieres for the new seasons of “Last Comic Standing” (Thursday, May 22, 9-11 p.m.), “America’s Got Talent” (Tuesday, May 27, 8-10 p.m.) — the #1 summer reality series in adults 18-49 and total viewers — and “American Ninja Warrior” (Monday, May 26, 9-11 p.m.) were previously announced.

Here are the summer premiere dates and times. Series descriptions and information are below:

- Tuesday, May 27   “The Night Shift”

- Thursday, May 29 “Undateable"

- Friday, May 30      “Crossbones”

- Wednesday, June 25 “Taxi Brooklyn”

SCRIPTED PROGRAMMING

“THE NIGHT SHIFT”
Cast: Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Ken Leung, Brendan Fehr, Daniella Alonso, Robert Bailey Jr., Jeananne Goosen, JR Lemon, Freddy Rodriguez
Logline: “The Night Shift” focuses on the men and women who work the overnight shift at San Antonio Memorial Hospital. They are an irreverent and special breed, particularly adrenaline junkie T.C. Callahan (Eoin Macken, “Merlin”). After three grueling tours of duty in Afghanistan, T.C. is about to learn that his toughest battles will be fought right here at home. He and his team of late-night docs, including best friend Topher (Ken Leung, “Lost”) and protégé Drew (Brendan Fehr, “Roswell”), know how to let off steam with the casual prank or two, but when lives are at stake, they are all business. Unfortunately, the night shift is now under new senior management and boss Michael Ragosa (Freddy Rodriguez, “Six Feet Under”), who has to balance the real-world pressures of cutting costs while battling the stigma that he is more interested in saving money than helping people.

“UNDATEABLE”
Cast: Chris D’Elia, Brent Morin, Ron Funches, Rick Glassman, David Fynn, Bianca Kajlich
Logline: Whether it’s due to a lack of style, the wrong job, or even just a bad haircut, everyone goes through a time in their lives when they’re undateable. Most of us eventually grow out of it, but some people need a little more help than others. Enter Danny Burton (Chris D’Elia, “Whitney”). Confident, attractive and impervious to outside opinions, 29-year-old Danny — who may be in a state of arrested development himself — decides to help out his new roommate, Justin Kearney (comedian Brent Morin), the owner of an unsuccessful bar and a chronic overthinker, and Justin’s group of oddball friends — Shelly (comedian Ron Funches), Burski (comedian Rick Glassman) and Brett (David Fynn, “Game of Thrones”). Danny introduces the gang to his recently divorced older sister, Leslie (Bianca Kajlich, “Rules of Engagement”), who immediately bonds with this group of guys, as she feels a little stuck in her own life as well. The gang spends most of their time at Justin’s bar, helping solve each other’s respective problems over beers, and while they love to give each other a hard time, they always have each other’s back.

“CROSSBONES”
Cast: John Malkovich, Richard Coyle, Tracy Ifeachor, David Hoflin, Yasmine Al Massri, Chris Perfetti, Claire Foy
Logline: It’s 1715 on the Bahamian island of New Providence where the diabolical pirate Blackbeard (John Malkovich) reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. Part shantytown and part marauder’s paradise, New Providence is a mounting threat to international commerce. To gain control of this fearsome society, assassin Tom Lowe is sent to the buccaneers’ haven to take down the brilliant and charismatic Blackbeard. But The Closer Lowe gets, the more he ?nds that his quest is not so simple. Lowe can’t help but admire the political ideals of Blackbeard, whose thirst for knowledge knows no bounds, and no law. But Lowe is not the only danger to Blackbeard’s rule. He is a man with many rivals and one great weakness — a passionately driven woman whom he cannot deny.

“TAXI BROOKLYN”
Cast: Chyler Leigh, Jacky Ido, Ally Walker, Jennifer Esposito
Logline: An action-comedy police procedural centered on the fractious, closely bonded partnership between a streetwise Marseilles-born New York City taxi driver and an intensely driven NYPD detective for whom this immigrant cabbie becomes chauffeur, insider on the streets and unofficial partner.

“WELCOME TO SWEDEN”
Cast: Greg Poehler, Josephine Bornebusch, Lena Olin, Claes Månsson, Patrick Duffy, Illeana Douglas, Christopher Wagelin, Per Svensson
Logline: Bruce Evans (Greg Poehler) and Emma Wiik (Josephine Bornebusch) seem to be the perfect couple, so when she makes the life-changing decision to move back to her native Stockholm to accept a prestigious banking position after a year together, she is surprised and thrilled that he agrees to move with her. Moving halfway around the world with a new love is a huge step and Bruce, with no job, friends or real clue about what he is getting himself into, is quick to face the many unique challenges and culture clashes that living in a foreign land presents — most notably, how to win over Emma’s strange and very Swedish family.

“WORKING THE ENGELS”
Cast: Andrea Martin, Kacey Rohl, Azura Skye, Benjamin Arthur
Logline: The series centers on a family who must band together to keep their heads above water when their father and breadwinner passes away, leaving them a mountain of debt. The Engels must all go to work running Dad’s storefront law firm, with one minor problem — daughter Jenna is the only one who is qualified to practice law.

The top 100 comics in America will vie for 20 spots. These 20 will then compete in a semifinal round and the best of the best will emerge, with the top 10 moving into the compelling challenge rounds. In this phase, they will compete in different comedy disciplines, such as sketch, improv and stand-up, proving themselves both individually and in teams. Then the funniest of all will take the coveted title of “Last Comic Standing,” winning a prize package that includes $250,000, an NBC talent deal and a half-hour scripted project to be developed by Universal Television.

“FOOD FIGHTERS”
Host: Adam Richman
Logline: The best amateur cooks in America put their signature dishes to the test against five professional chefs. Television personality, author and food enthusiast Adam Richman (“Fandemonium,” “Man vs. Food”) hosts this compelling food battle in which home cooks Face Off against five culinary pros, climbing a money ladder with increasing cash prizes for every professional chef they knock out.  A “Dinner Party” of culinary judges determines who has made the tastiest dish, revealing whether amateur cooks have what it takes to beat the very best.

So, last September, she put her busy life on hold to try and find love on “The Bachelor.” She thought she had found her match, but in the end it was not meant to be, and Andi walked away from Juan Pablo. She did not, however, let that experience stop her desire to find her perfect soul mate. Andi will embark on her own journey to find love when she stars in the tenth edition of “The Bachelorette,” on ABC.

And confident and charismatic new Team Commander Sergeant Mark Cross shakes up the station when he joins the team. He and Angie share a mysterious and strained connection, one she would prefer to leave in the past. Chris & Heidi, with AHWC's medical director Dr. Holly Wyatt, MD and associate professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, will guide these individuals to safely lose up to half their body weight, ultimately revealing an amazing metamorphosis.  The Anschutz Health and Wellness Center offers some of the country’s most advanced research and science-based expertise, focusing on a comprehensive weight loss and weight-loss management approach, including fitness, nutrition and wellness services.

“RISING STAR” – PREMIERES SUNDAY, JUNE 22

ABC’s new reality series “Rising Star” completely reinvents the traditional singing competition as--for the first time ever--the audience has the final say in real time. The show follows a group of aspiring singers as they audition in live performances.  During the performances, viewers vote via an App in real time to determine if the singer will advance in the competition.  If the voting reaches a certain threshold, the performer moves on, and the performer can see how the voting is going during the performance, so the feedback is immediate and dramatic.

“Rising Star” is from Keshet DCP, the joint venture between Keshet International (KI), the global distribution and production arm of Keshet Media Group, and DC Media, the parent company of dick clark productions (dcp). Keshet DCP was formed to leverage Keshet’s globally successful unscripted business with DC Media’s expansive U.S. infrastructure and production expertise. The singing competition for ABC will mark the company’s first foray into the market since its formation in October. Ken Warwick (“American Idol”) and Nicolle Yaron (“The Voice”) are executive producing.

“NY MED” – PREMIERES TUESDAY, JUNE 24

Fans of ABC’s widely acclaimed real life medical series can take heart. A fresh edition of the multi award-winning “NY Med” will air this summer after nearly two years of production. Expanding their scope, the producers offer a riveting tale of two cities. Each episode in this eight-part series toggles between the renowned surgeons of Manhattan’s New York Presbyterian Hospital and the gritty world of trauma surgeons at Newark’s University Hospital where the ER is a doorway to the mean streets of one of America’s most violent cities. Sometimes poignant and often uproarious, this limited series takes a deep dive into high stakes medicine through the eyes of Unforgettable characters, including a hilarious trio of returning ER nurses who must cope with tricky personal crises while caring for some of the nation’s most bossy patients. Mehmet Oz rounds out the character roster with his extraordinary surgical skills on full display as his deft hands work to fix damaged hearts and save lives.

“Rookie Blue” – Premieres THURSDAY, JULY 17

In keeping with last season’s theme of ‘change’, 15 Division welcomes two new characters who shake up the familiar dynamic. Inspector John Jarvis (Oliver Becker, Rent-A-Goalie) strolls into 15 Division with a serious agenda. He wants the real story: is this a division full of heroes or a minefield full of screw-ups? Seamlessly flipping from pleasant to menacing, Inspector Jarvis is a political spin-master of epic proportions. He’s out to shake things up and make his mark. Also new to the team is 15 Division’s brand-new rookie, Duncan Moore aka “Selfie” (Matthew Owen Murray, Degrassi: The Next Generation). He is the very picture of a fresh-faced millennial: confident, eager to impress, and excellent at pointing out mistakes, particularly other people’s. But when Duncan struggles to fit into the group at 15, the officers soon have their hands full with this challenging and well-connected new recruit.

Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym), Dov Epstein (Gregory Smith), Sam Swarek (Ben Bass), Chris Diaz (Travis Milne), Traci Nash (Enuka Okuma), Gail Peck (Charlotte Sullivan), Nick Collins (Peter Mooney), Chloe Price (Priscilla Faia), Oliver Shaw (Matt Gordon), Marlo Cruz (Rachel Ancheril), Noelle Williams (Melanie Nicholls-King), Steve Peck (Adam MacDonald), and Holly Stewart (Aliyah O’Brien) all return for Season 5.

This week, there's a bunch of news for the following shows:  Comic Book Men, Continuum, In The Flesh, JIM HENSON’S CREATURE SHOP CHALLENGE, Mind Games, Mountain Monsters, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Vikings, The Walking Dead, The Biggest Loser Auditions

Come on in and check it out:

Cable TV Observations:

Have you noticed on the FX VoD on Comcast, they now give you the banner telling you what the show is rated, but then, instead of going into the show like it used to, that it hits an ad now?

What the heck is up with the VoD service when one of the advertising segments is about the show you are watching? We are already watching people!  Really?

TV ads these days are so abrupt.  It used to be that a scene would end and fade, then the commercial would come to life.  But now-a-days, before the scene ends, and even before sentences are finished, ads slam onto the picture, desperately trying to pack in as much ad time as possible these days.

Comic Book Men

AMC likes how the show has been doing, and has announced that they renewed Comic Book Men for its fourth season.

-

Continuum

REMINDER:

Season three of Continuum returns for its third season on Friday, April 4th, 2014.

If you recall:

"At the end of Season 2, Alec Sadler (Erik Knudsen) made the Earth-shattering decision to hijack Kiera's (Rachel Nichols) chance to get home, in order to save Emily, the girl he loves, from certain death.

This act of desperation condemned Kiera to incarceration by the Freelancers, who are 'collecting' time travelers to protect history. Now, Kiera must face the consequences of Alec's betrayal and somehow escape the Freelancers."

-

JIM HENSON’S CREATURE SHOP CHALLENGE

Syfy has reported that the premiere episode of Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge has cranked out more than 1 million viewers, making it "... the channel’s highest-rated unscripted premiere among Adults 25-54 (628K) since July 2013 during its telecast on Tuesday, March 25."

" the series averaged 1.12 million total viewers and 585K Adults 18-49, while proving especially strong among women demographics."

I haven't caught it yet, but plan to!

-

Mind Games

What did I say a few weeks back?  That the show is way too smart for your average Nielsen family?  Yea, well, Mind Games was a smart show, and I thought it had a fascinating premise to it, as it dared to divulge the underbelly of the world of advertising and marketing.

But be it as it may, ABC had to cut its loses and has cancelled Mind Games.

The show was pulled from the schedule, effective immediately.

Yep, that's bad.

-

Reminder: Mountain Monsters Season 2 Premieres Friday, April 4 at 10/9c on Destination America

-

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland:

I didn't even know/remember this show was on, and apparently it didn't take that well with other viewers either, as ABC has cancelled this spinoff.

ABC will let the show finish out its 13-episode season, is it concludes on April 3rd.

-

Vikings

The second season hasn't even hit the half-way point yet, but Vikings was renewed by The History Channel for a third season already.

They gave it a 10-episode order.

-

DON'T FORGET:  The Walking Dead season finale is this Sunday.  Boo.  I'll miss the show.  It's one of the few I truly look forward to each week.

Syfy HELIX news

Syfy Renews HELIX

If you're a fan of Helix, (whose season finale airs tonight [Fri, 3-28-14]). you might be happy to know that Syfy just this moment, sent out a press release saying they've renewed Helix for a second season.

The show, for me, seemed to start out slow, and felt like it was following a scripted outline, but it seemed to get some legs under it as it went along.

via press release

Helix, Syfy’s chilling scripted drama, has been renewed for a second season, it was announced today by Bill McGoldrick, EVP, Original Content, Syfy. The 13-episode second season will commence production later this year, with an eye towards a winter 2015 premiere.

Said McGoldrick, “Helix has built one of our most loyal and consistent audiences in its first season on Syfy. The incredibly talented writing and producing team have crafted a thriller that consistently delivered suspense, twists and high quality drama. We look forward to growing this passionate audience in what promises to be an even more memorable second season.”

Helix premiered on January 10, 2014, as the top cable scripted entertainment program in the time period, and helping Syfy rank as the #2 cable entertainment network among both Adults 25-54 (1.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.3 million). Since its premiere, Helix has averaged 2.1 million total viewers, 1.1 million Adults 25-54 and 1 million Adults 18-49.

Helix is executive produced by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander), Steven Maeda (Lost, The X-Files) who is also showrunner, and Lynda Obst (Contact, Sleepless in Seattle). The series is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Kaji Productions and Lynda Obst Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Helix, which was created by co-executive producer Cameron Porsandeh and features Billy Campbell (Killing Lincoln, The Killing), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, 47 Ronin), Kyra Zagorsky (Supernatural), and Mark Ghanimé (Emily Owens, M.D.), as well as guest stars Jordan Hayes (House at the End of the Street), Meegwun Fairbrother, and Neil Napier (Riddick), will air its season one finale on Friday, March 28 @ 10pm

TNT's THE LAST SHIP Could Be Interesting

Eric Dane starring in TNT's THE LAST SHIP

Fans of Eric Dane ("Dr. McSteamy"), Rhona Mitra or Adam Baldwin might be happy to see this tidbit!  It's been a long time since we've seen Dane on TV...  since Grey's Anatomy, and on the big screen in Burlesque, Valentine's Day and other films.

I just came across a bit on a new show coming up on TNT called The Last Ship, based off a novel written by William Brinkley.  It will star Grey's Anatomy's Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra (Strike Back, The Gates or you might remember her as Commander Kiva from Stargate Universe) and Adam Baldwin in a story about the world coming under siege by a virus, and just by certain events and happenstance needs, a lone naval vessel finds itself on the quest to find the cure.

Against all odds.

The show's executive producer is Michael Bay (Transformers franchise). And you can tell it has his touch, from some of the camera angles and especially the focal points of the camera work on the military weaponry.  Michael loves his military!

The Last Ship series premiere will air on June 22nd, 2014, on TNT.  Below is a trailer for the show:

Syfy's Summer Thursday: DEFIANCE and DOMINION

Syfy's DEFIANCE and DOMINION news: summer season premiere dates

Syfy is looking to prove their commitment to providing viewers with quality, scripted content for genre fans.  And that means that starting on Thursday, June 19th 2014, they will be providing a Thursday night block of this kind of entertainment.

This should be a great thing for fans of this genre, and it could be a good thing for those who were fans of the CW series, Smallville. Or Whedonesque fans.  (Keep reading, you'll see what I mean in a moment.)

The shows airing on Thursday nights will include Defiance and Dominion.

-

When Defiance returns for its season premiere on June 19, we watch the turmoil that comes about after The Earth Republic has taken control of the town.

Nolan (Grant Bowler) traverses the badlands to find a lost Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), Amanda (Julie Benz) has an unexpected new role in the town as she searches for Kenya and the Tarr family desperately tries to keep control of their criminal empire in the midst of dramatic changes.

New cast members to the series include James Murray as the new mayor Niles Pottinger, Anna Hopkins as Earth Republic soldier Jessica “Berlin” Rai and William Atherton as Earth Republic official Viceroy Mercado.

-

After the season premiere of Defiance, we'll see the series premiere of Dominion.  Be warned, it's a 90-minute premiere.

if you've ever seen the 2010 movie Legion, then your a leg up on the story of this new series, since it's based on characters from that film.

Dominion is a supernatural action drama that takes place 25 years after the events in Legion, and takes place in the aftermath of a devastating war between angels and mankind, which has left the world a changed place.

We follow the trek of a rebellious soldier amidst the celestial battle as it touches down on earth.

Dominion stars Christopher Egan (Kings), Tom Wisdom (300), Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones), Alan Dale (Lost), Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Luke Allen-Gale (The Borgias).

For Smallville fans, it might be of interest to note that Smallville's showrunners, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer joined the creative team of this series as Executive Producers/Co-showrunners.  This could give it the potential same engaging story feel that Smallville had, that captured fans hearts for 10 seasons of that show.
