3 DAYS TO KILL Review

3 Days to Kill movie review
After watching all the movie previews for 3 Days to Kill, I was expecting something of an action spy thriller about a dad who is a CIA operative.  The side story was that our operative is a sick man and he's tempted back into one last job by the lure of a cure for his illness.

The opening act shows us that Ethan Renner (Kevin Costner) as an aging yet deadly CIA operative, who is pretty sharp with the gun.  But he also has other issues, like trying to reconnect with his daughter after being an absentee father out on operations.

But he's sick and the CIA doesn't need him any more.

But there's one more job he needs do to, but he doesn't want to.  He wants to spend time with his family since he was given a prognosis of only three months to live.

But he's offered an experimental drug by Vivi (Amber Heard) to cure him (maybe) for one last mission.

And that's how the story gets under way.

But...

What we get instead, is a story where Ethan works on this one last job, while spending an unusually annoying amount of time developing the father/daughter story, as he spends time reconnecting with his daughter, Zooey (Hailee Steinfeld).

But throughout the film, there are moments of levity that can be construed as funny, even if it's out of character for a spy thriller.

Has ANT-MAN Developments Shorted THE WINTER SOLDIER One-Shot?

CAPTAIN AMERICA THE WINTER SOLDIER gets a blu-ray release date

The Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie has an online/streaming digital release date of August 19th and the hard product Blu-ray/DVD is set for a September 9th release date!  Mark that on your calendars!

But if you look over the extra features,

Making-of Featurettes
Audio Commentary
Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
Bloopers

You might notice there's no "One-Shot" or Marvel short in the list.

That's because there won't be one.

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that it isn't because of a typo that it's not listed, but that the very popular Marvel One-Shot shorts that have accompanies ALL Marvel releases to date, won't be included in the Cap 2 home entertainment release.

The One-Shots are popular and have been (in theory) responsible for spawning TV shows (Item 47, from The Avengers Blu-ray) spawned Agents of SHIELD, and (Agent Carter, from the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray) has spawned the upcoming ABC series, Agent Carter.

Plus, they used a One-Shot to "fix" the bullshit move they pulled with Trevor pretending to be "The Mandarin" in IM3 with in the Thor: The Dark World release.

So why stop now?

Per EW, who reached out to Marvel, they've been told if the studio does not have a good story to tell, so they won't include a One-Shot.

Though I can't imagine what "good story" they can't come up with, what with all the properties at their disposal and in upcoming films and potential TV and streaming series.

But then I had to wonder, with time to spare, if maybe the Ant-Man debacle that took place earlier this week and last, had anything to do with it.

A quickie background: The man who brought Ant-Man to Marvel, with his own vision, Edgar Wright, has left the project, due to what has been called creative differences between what he had in mind and what Marvel wants.

It's pretty surprising, considering Wright does some pretty good and fun work, and maybe not too surprising that Marvel has an over-seeing vision of their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) tone that everything has to fit into. And having done that so well, well, I can't decide who to feel bad for!

Though if I were Wright, sure, there might be creative differences, but to have been a part of this mega-universe of Disney/Marvel's would have been a boon in the long run, I would think.

-

With that said, I have to wonder if the One-Shot that might have been included in the Cap 2 product might have been an Ant-Man short? And now that the project is teetering a bit from the production changes being made, they weren't prepared to show the product that was slated to come out with Cap 2?

It's all huge conjecture on my part, but conjecture led by the absence of what many call the wildly popular One-Shot short series we've been getting from Marvel.  But Marvel execs say if they don't have something strong enough to bring to the One-Shot table, they won't make them.

I'm having a hard time swallowing that one, what with the timing and all of the Ant-Man film. But it is what it is.

I hope the bloopers are more than the usual five or six oops moments at least!

Syfy Channel Summer 2014 Programming Schedule

Syfy Channel Summer 2014 Programming Schedule

{info via Syfy press release}

Summer is coming fast and Syfy has prepared itself with a slate of entertaining and interesting programming.

We have a little bit of everything to sample from the ever-growing network, from new shows like Dominion and Wizard Wars, to returning series like Defiance and Face Off.  Then there's a few questionable programming ventures in the list too.

ALSO, don't forget the network's annual Twilight Zone marathon that is taking place on July 4th, from 8am to 8pm!  Sure, it's not quite what it used to be, but hey, it is what it is!

-

Defiance returns for its second season on June 19th. The cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene and Jesse Rath.

-

On the same night (June 19th) Dominion will premiere its pilot episode.  It's based on characters and themes from the 2010 supernatural movie, Legion and takes place in the year 25 A.E..  (OK, I thought Legion was a fun flick.)

Basically, it sounds like CW's Supernatural, where an army of lower angels has waged a war of possession against mankind and the archangel Michael has chosen to side with and protect the humans.

The cast includes Christopher Egan (Kings), Tom Wisdom (300), Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones), Alan Dale (Lost), Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Luke Allen-Gale (The Borgias).

-

FACE OFF

Face Off returns for its seventh season on July 22nd.

As always each week presents the possibility of going home if a contestant has a bad week.

Season 7 will have a new judge, Lois Burwell.  Lois is an Academy-Award winning makeup artist known for her work on Lincoln, Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, War Horse and War of the Worlds.

McKenzie Westmore hosts plus other judges include multi-Academy-Award winner Ve Neill (The Hunger Games, Pirates of the Caribbean), Glenn Hetrick (CSI: New York, Heroes, Legion), and Neville Page (Avatar, Prometheus).

Michael Westmore (Star Trek) serves as the contestant mentor. Yes, McKenzie's father.

-

WIZARD WARS

A reality competition series called Wizard Wars premieres on August 19th.

Each week magicians are tested to create illusions and apparent miracles.  Then the winner of the week challenges the house team of two-time World Championship of Magic winner Gregory Wilson, Wynn Resort resident magician Shimshi; YouTube sensation Justin Flom, and internationally renowned Mentalist Angela Funovits.

Judges include Penn & Teller, Jason Latimer and Christen Gerhart.

SONS OF ANARCHY Season 7 Casting News And Spoilers

SONS of ANARCHY Casting and Spoiler News for Season 7

As any long time fan of Sons of Anarchy knows, the upcoming seventh season will be its last, per show creator Kurt Sutter.  And it looks like filming has begun on the final season.

And with the start up of filming, other developments are starting to take place... like casting news!

-

SoA SPOILERS If you're on a DVD/VoD Viewing Schedule...

-

I saw a Variety piece reporting that Marilyn Manson has been tapped for a recurring role in season seven.

Manson's character will be Ron Tully, a white supremacist who runs things from prison, and Jax starts working with him to expand his sphere of influence.

Seriously?  Jax is going that route?  This can't be good.

-

Other casting news is that Annabeth Gish (The Bridge) has been hired to play an edgy new sheriff in Charming, Sheriff Althea Jarry.  Her first job will be to figure out who killed former Sheriff Eli Roosevelt and Tara Knowles.  And in the process, she also figures out that she needs to work with SAMCRO

And for The Bridge fans, yes, she is still in the show and filming her work over there concurrently.  That's crazy busy!

BAD TEACHER and 1 More Gone

Bad Teacher and Friends with Better Lives dropped
In case you're wondering, yes, Bad Teacher and Friends with Better Lives were getting horrible TV ratings and were slated to be cancelled/not renewed.  And in light of that, CBS is pulling both shows from their schedule, with no word on if they will even try to air the remaining episodes of either show.

The Bad Teacher promos seemed, well, bad.  It seemed to be a sitcom version of the movie itself and didn't seem to offer anything else beyond what was already provided by the fine movie it was based off of.

Hope you weren't a big fan of either.

Keep in mind, other cancelled TV shows drop kicked by CBS included Intelligence, Hostages and The Crazy Ones.

I liked Intelligence, but was worried that the plots were a little basal.  Hostages... just how far can a kidnapping plot go?

News: WORLD WAR Z Sequel, J Frakes news, ComiXology

Today I actually yak about a non-item like John Carter because what happened to it was a shame.  I touch on news about a World War Z sequel, ComiXology is offering up what??? And what is Star Trek's Jonathan Frakes up to these days?

-

John Carter, No Sequel

As you may know, more than likely there will be no sequel to John Carter, that starred Taylor Kitsch, because the movie lost $200M at the box office.  All to no account, due to the in-fighting in the studio and the crap marketing campaign from Disney.

In an interview with Variety, Kitsch told them that the script was f*ing aweseome.

Perceptions are that if the sequel had followed the 2nd book in the Burroughs series, it would have rocked and been less cliched.  AKA, more cerebral.

Oh well.

Way back in the day I remember when the movie was coming out, the marketing sucked my left ...!  I had no inclination to want to see it.  Than a fan-made trailer took ALL the pieces of the sad bits of marketing and put it together to make an incredible home-made trailer.

THAT is what convinced me to go see the movie, and the movie was damn good.  After it flubbed, it kicked ass for a very long time on the home entertainment market.

Too bad.  In-fighting sucks.

Summer 2014 TV Premiere Dates

TV News: Summer 2014 TV Premiere Dates

If you were wondering when what is coming back to TV, wonder no more.

First up is an alphabetical list of shows, their premiere dates to their right.  After that list, is a list by date, if you want to look over the calendar.

To the right of each show title is their network and if they're a new series, that will be designated with an '(n)' next to it.

An interesting foot note, is how Discovery and Syfy are battling it out for a "shark week" programming block.

Movies and TV New to DVD/BD, Tues, 5-27-14

Here's a quick list of Movies and TV New to DVD/BD, Tues, 5-27-14

This week with new DVD and Blu-ray releases coming out on Tuesday, May 27th, 2014, we have a surprisingly popular aquatic themed series, a spy show's fourth season from USA Network, another chapter of animated Dragons and a third season of guys in suits.  No... really, Suits.

Other notables include a Dr Who title, some obscure Dracula title I'm not holding my breath about, and a bunch of badly named movies that might be more mock offs than knock offs.

Check it out:

The top-ten pre-sellers (per Amazon's sorting):

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Starring: Bill Murray, Owen Wilso

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Covert Affairs: Season 4 Starring: Piper Perabo, Christopher Gorham

Covert Affairs: Season 4

And I can't disagree with that score.  It's a decent piece of entertainment and they went so far as to mix it up pretty nicely heading into s4 from the routine spy drama to one of the good guy being on the run. I can't wait to see what they're going to do next season!

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Review

X-Men Days of Future Past movie review - a sentinel head

I went and saw X-Men: Days of Future Past today, and even though I hit up the 3D XD screening and paid the crazy bucks to see the over-priced screening*, I came away without a single complaint about the money spent seeing this latest chapter of the X-Men film franchise.

-

The front part of this movie review is a non-spoiler chat, leaving as many details as possible out while discussing how I feel about the movie.  Afterwards, I chat about a few things within the story, under the spoiler moniker.  After that, let's chat about that end-credits scene!

NON-SPOILER Movie Review Notes

My first comment is that I am not an X-Men franchise fan.  It's entertainment for the lulls between some of my other favorite franchises.  And this time around, Bryan Singer directed off a script by Simon Kinberg (Jumper, Sherlock Holmes, X-Men The Last Stand) and to be honest, they found the perfect combination to mix story elements with action elements and made the film experience a very entertaining theater experience.

Shawn Ashmore, Ellen Page, Daniel Cudmore and Adan Canto in X-Men Days of Future Past - a review

The film pulls together the various generations of mutants, as they battle evil across the ages as it opens in the far future, where automated machines called Sentinels are rooting out all mutants.  The Sentinels are designed to defeat all mutants by gauging their power and countering it.  Thus, they are the ultimate and unstoppable mutant killing machine.

Mutants are up against a wall, and their last ditch effort is to send someone back in time to prevent the development of these killing machines and to fix this horrible dystopian future they find themselves in.  All they need to do is divert certain actions or events to save themselves in the now.  The future.

But as we learn or not learn, time is like a river.  Sure, you can divert the water around some object or block, but it seems to always find its way back on course.

It's an uphill (uptime?) battle as we follow the story both in the future and the past (early 70's), as events unfold.  Past events slowly impact future events, and to be honest, as the story moves forward, the mix of action and story was sublime.  Not too much of one or the other, and PLENTY of both.

We're introduced or reintroduced to characters we all know and love, where the cast includes...

Hugh Jackman as Logan in X-Men Days of Future Past

Hugh Jackman – Logan / Wolverine
James McAvoy – Charles Xavier
Michael Fassbender – Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto
Jennifer Lawrence – Raven / Mystique
Halle Berry – Storm
Nicholas Hoult – Hank / Beast
Anna Paquin – Rogue
Ellen Page – Kitty Pryde
Peter Dinklage – Dr. Bolivar Trask
Shawn Ashmore – Bobby / Iceman
Omar Sy – Bishop
Evan Peters – Peter / Quicksilver
Josh Helman – Maj. Bill Stryker
Daniel Cudmore – Colossus
Bingbing Fan - Blink
Adan Canto – Sunspot
Booboo Stewart – Warpath
Ian McKellen – Magneto
Patrick Stewart – Professor X
Lucas Till – Havok

-

Michael Fassbender as Magneto in X-Men Days of Future Past

Notable performances came from Jackman, McAvoy, Fassbender, Dinklage and believe it or not, Evan Peters as Quicksilver.  The ensemble was great, but these five pulled the story forward wonderfully.

Jackman was unusually non-stoic, but more emotional than ever before.  Though that's not hard, considering.

McAvoy showed us a side of Xavier I've never seen before.  The formative years of when he cemented his beliefs that everyone is good to one degree or another.

Fassbender exhuded the power of Lenhsherr like never before, showing just how powerful he is.  Dang.

Peter Dinklage as Dr. Bolivar Trask in X-Men Days of Future Past - a review

If you love Peter Dinklage, you will love Peter Dinklage as Trask.  If you don't, you will. His onscreen presence is always an enjoyable experience, regardless of who he plays.

Be prepared for Peters as Quicksilver. What a pile of fun he turns out to be.  I liked his style.  I can't wait to see how Marvel portrays the character with a different actor.

OVERALL,

If I had to give the movie a score, I'd give X-Men: Days of Future Past a popcorn-10 score!  To be honest, if it weren't a fantasy/sci-fi flick, I'd dare to give it a dramatic 9 score.  But I have to stick to my guns on this, and stay with the popcorn score.

It was well worth the stupid amount of money they charged me for an XD (large format) 3D movie.

*I see that 20th Century Fox has caught on to Disney's trick of screening a movie in theaters where the more affordable 2D screenings of a movie are harder to find in a good time slot.  For me, my schedule forced me into the $15 ticket price.  (That WAS the early bird price, if they have that for XD 3D.  It was the first screening of the day.)

I had 13 3D options while there are only 8 2D options at my local theater.

The movie was FUN in 3D, but as with any good story told, it's entertaining enough to not need it.  But when you have a lot of visuals/CGI, 3D can be fun.  You can't go wrong either way you choose to go.

Gareth Edwards To Direct a STAR WARS Movie

GODZILLA director Gareth Edwards To Direct a STAR WARS Movie

News on the street says that director Gareth Edwards has been tapped to direct a Star Wars spin-off movie that's due out on Dec of 2016.

This is wonderful news for the director who has just come on the scene with his 2010 indie movie, Monsters.  And from there, he apparently caught the attention of the right people, and was tapped to direct the 2014 reboot of Godzilla.

And now this, becoming a member of the Disney family by landing a  directing gig of a Star Wars movie.  From indie to Star Wars.  That's just an awesome move.

This is an interesting development with Edwards landing this new gig.  That being that with news of Legendary working on a Godzilla sequel, it may have to wait on Edwards schedule as he works for the Dec 2016 Star Wars release date.

But Legendary said, in a congrats message, that they were expecting to leave time for Edwards to direct another film before picking up the Godzilla sequel job.

Then they also dropped a nugget, saying that they have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans.

It's neat to be in on the ground floor of a new director on the scene and to be able watch his entire collective... in two films, and soon, to be in a major franchise film for his third film.

Some guys have all the luck, and if you know what he did to put Monsters on the screen, you would appreciate the reward of his hard work.

Basically, he created and directed the movie.  In a van full of 7 people, he cranked out filming of Monsters over a 3 week period of time.  The film starred 2 primary characters and most extras were folks they found along their filming route in Belize, Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Then when all was said and done with filming, he went home, and using off-the-shelf software, did the special effects himself.

Syfy Acquired SPARTACUS from STARZ

Syfy Acquires SPARTACUS, will premiere in June 2014

Holy what?  Yes, Syfy has taken a step in the serious action drama direction by acquiring the rights to all episodes of STARZ's original production series of Spartacus.  The rights include a 39 episode count, including the prequel to the series, which aired between seasons 1 and 2. That's the entire run of Spartacus!  (I never thought in a million years of this development.  In fact, I never thought of it, period!)

Syfy is moving fast with this acquisition and has also announced that Spartacus will premiere on Syfy on June 26th at 10pm.

( Psst: Defiance — Marathon on Monday, May 26 at 8 a.m. ET.  Returns for Season Two on June 19 at 8/7c )

Amongst its acquired TV shows that is produced elsewhere, and aired on Syfy, (IE: Lost Girl, Bitten, Continuum), this is going to put those other shows to shame.  If this is your thing.

(Hey Arrow fans, see Manu Bennett in a whole new light!)

As it goes, I rank their acquired shows with Bitten on the bottom an Continuum at the top of the heap, with Lost Girl and all its "allures," starting to jump the shark in the story line.

You should know though, that Spartacus brings forth a new kind of writing and quality you may not be used to on any Syfy series to date (see press release details below.). And it brings with it a fantastic trio of general story lines to follow:

There's the story of the slaves and their own heirarchy in the stables. Their hopes, and love.  All while being abused by their slave owners, for whatever purpose they deem fit.

There's the story of the politics behind the various slave owners and who positions themselves in the right place at the right time to entertain the masses.  Whose favor do they pursue.

And there's the individual stories under each roof, or slave owner.

When it first aired on Starz, I found the story compelling to follow.  And this show has a beginning, middle and end to it.  So there's no following this show where the writing finds itself grabbing at straws to keep production going.

Spartacus cast member Manu Bennett - by Bruce Simmons
I have a really cool story of why I became a life-long fan of Many Bennett if you want to hear it.
Just leave a comment saying so!

But Syfy is going to have its hands full with Spartacus, in both the verbal and visual departments.

Blended

Rated PG-13; 117

After a bad blind date, a man and woman find themselves stuck together at a resort for families, where their attraction grows as their respective kids benefit from the burgeoning relationship.

Director: Frank Coraci
Stars:    Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Kevin Nealon

Wow, it's been quite some time since Adam and Drew were together in a movie (50 First Dates) and that was a cute film, and maybe, arguably, Sandler's potentially best role I've seen him in.  Maybe this latest film of his (and hers) will give them both a fun film to be remembered from, because some of his latest films haven't really hit it out of the park.  Never mind outside the dirt diamond.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, The Official Movie Name

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, The Official Movie Name

The Man of Steel sequel gets a name and the primary DC Comics hero characters are confirmed.

There we have it, the official name of the Man of Steel sequel, which is now being called Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Along with the name we have confirmed not the obvious, of a few classic characters in the cast, particularly those of Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor.

No more guessing on movie names! In addition, we now have a website address to go to also, if Facebook isn't your thing.  (And I don't blame you there.  They're seriously effing things up as they go.)

No mention of any Nolan in the production line.  Well, here's hoping!

As I look over the comments in some of the social media, it is fascinating to see how folks are twerking out over the cast.  Folks seem vocal about all the choices that the studio has made, from Affleck, Gadot and  Eisenberg.  I'm surprised no one is having a fart attack about the butler.

On the other hand, hmm, who in the world could Holly Hunter be playing?

Everyone is titling their articles as "rumor patrols" or what not, but seriously, until DC Entertainment announces it, they should be titling their blog posts "guessing patrols."

The best guess is that Holly Hunter will be playing Dr. Leslie Thompkins, or a character like that.  Thompkins is a doctor who is a friend of the Wayne family, knows Bruce's identity, runs an orphanage in Crime Alley, treats Bruce's wounds and is an ear for Bruce to consul with.

But that's that.
