Keanu Reeves in John Wick, a review of sorts

John Wick (Keanu Reeves) starts out in a disjointed sort of fashion, between seeing him bleeding out in the opening scene, to a moment where he is at the bedside of his dying wife, to her funeral, then to his receiving a delivery of a puppy after her death, which was from his wife, and how cute it is. They get along famously, until a thug steals his car and kills his puppy.

You see, that puppy was the last thing his wife ever gave him. It was all he had left of her. Oops on the thugs!

Here's the thing, if you like revenge porn and a fascinatingly interesting fighting style, then this is seriously your movie. Oh, and if you like to see harmed animals avenged, this too is  for you.

CBS's UNDER THE DOME Jumps Over the Shark

CBS's UNDER THE DOME season three premiere review
Look! I think I see a plot on the floor!!! Where!?
I just caught the two-hour (too many) season three premiere of CBS's Under the Dome, and to be honest, there was a reason why key demographic numbers were dropping in the TV ratings from season one to two and this third season premiere just pointed out exactly why the series has started to flounder.

Why CBS renewed the show, I am not sure, but the show runners obviously do not know what to do with the story now that they've basically covered much of Stephen King's source material, and are now just pulling random plots out of a hat with the go-to tool of mind f***ing with the primary characters.

WHY CBS, why?

In the third season premiere of Under the Dome, we watch people looking to exit the world of the dome, and they suddenly find themselves on the outside, looking into it.

MARVEL Updates: Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor's Hammer and No Comic-Con

Juuust in case you missed it, Marvel and Sony announced on June 23rd that they have cast their newest Spider-Man, in the form of actor Tom Holland. He's a relatively unknown quantity, which is code for cheap for Marvel and he is 19 years old.

He was picked and reported for web duty immediately on the set of Captain America: Civil War. And just as well, considering this "Civil War" tends to center a bit around Spider-Man in the comics.

As you may know or not, many websites were guessing that Spider-Man would appear in the film.

FROM This point on, there will or could be mild movie spoilers coming up...

Dark Horse Now on Comixology

I know I have a small contingent of Dark Horse Comics fans who visit Cinema Static, and they are kind enough to provide early review editions for CS, so with that in mind, I thought I'd share this little inbox nugget from Dark Horse with you:

BACHELORETTE Kaitlyn Bristowe Boinks A Contestant, So What?

BACHELORETTE Kaitlyn Bristowe

Well, that's that. The biggest oops in The Bachelorette history has apparently taken place, and all with the grunts and groans from within the room while the horny ABC film crew focus their cameras and sound gear on Kaitlyn's bedroom window.

ABC is definitely taking this reality TV to a new level, especially, if I dare, to call Kaitlyn one of Disney's new princesses?

And before I go much farther, I have to say that it is my fervent belief that for anyone to go on a show like this, their ego has got to totally out of control and bigger than life. No matter how nice or demure they might seem, it takes "balls" to live out your date hunting habits on national TV.

With that said...

(BTW: Does Shawn Booth not look a lot like Ryan Gosling? Just saying.)

IN TIME: Reading That Pesky Arm Clock

A reprint from Brusimm.com:  If you were wondering exactly how to read those pesky arm clocks in In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, well, here's the theory.

In the movie, the society it takes place in, when you hit 25-years-old, a biological clock kicks in and you have exactly one year to live.  The time is shown on your arm.  Time is the commodity in this society.  Things cost time and you can make time by working.  This is how folks stay alive.

But some have asked how the bloody heck do you read the arm clock in the movie?

Paranormal Acitivity, The Ghost Dimension

They've decided to call it quits on the last installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise with the next, upcoming film, titled Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.  It will be the last dimension.

After the first two that were pure popcorn fun, movie-goers started getting tired of the tale, even if they did continue to further the story a bit. With a prequel of sorts.

How A Movie Breaks Records By Selling Fewer Tickets

Jurassic World Is Still Breaking Monetary Records and if it keeps up what it has been doing, it will soon be the fifth all-time money maker in the realm of movies!

I love it when a B-movie gets slapped around by professional movie critics about its "characters lack of depth," and "thin story line," then the movie stands up and roars to such an extent that it can't be ignored.

In this case, Jurassic World is screaming at critical film reviewers saying, "Hey, I know the depth of my characters don't meet your expectations, but guess what, the entire world of movie-goers loves my shit!"  Boo-ya!

And what's crazy is that it is setting records all over the place while selling fewer tickets than other movies in the record books!

Wait, what?  Let me explain what I mean, and how I an not bashing on that premise, but just pointing it out.

My opus-ed follows after the break:

THE WALKING DEAD Season Six Promo Art

THE WALKING DEAD Season Six Promo Art

THE WALKING DEAD Season Six Promo Art Suggests Lines Being Drawn.

AMC has released a teaser promo art pic for the upcoming sixth season of The Walking Dead.

It's great to see Morgan back in the show, but if you read the various sources around the web, they are suggesting that this poster art suggests there will be a divide amongst the group. And that divide shows who supports whom by who they're standing behind..

Hitman Agent 47 promo art

I liked the other Hitman movie with Timothy Olyphant, but this one, with the three-minute trailer, is convincing me that this could be one really fun popcorn flick.

Hitman: Agent 47 is about "An assassin teams up with a woman to help her find her father and uncover the mysteries of her ancestry."  Additionally, the film will fill in some of the details why Rupert Friend's genetically engineered assassin rejects his programming to uncover his true origins.

The cast includes Zachary Quinto, Rupert Friend (Agent 47), Ciaran Hinds, Thomas Kretschmann, Hannah Ware.

INSIDE OUT Nabs A Few Custom Box Office Records

Last weekend, admittedly, no one is going to be getting near that #1 box office spot until Jurassic World goes extinct. Which is probably making many movie distributors groan.

Disney eyeballed the positive with the opening of Inside Out and reported that the film

So There Won't Be Any Solo HULK Movie?

HULK smash puny solo movie!

Word on the street until recently, has been that we have not seen plans for a solo Hulk film with Mark Ruffalo was because Universal held the rights to the character.

"Word on the street" equals RUMOR or misguided facts. And sometimes those are hard to see through, so more often than not you will see folks sourcing their intel.

When the man who plays the character says something, you tend to want to take the actor at his word when he was talking with the website, Collider. Key word: actor, not show runner. Not movie director. Not studio executive. Actor. (I do not mean any disrespect, but no matter how much we want to believe and how much we want to believe who said it, well...)

Now the latest word on the street (there I go again) about a Hulk movie from Forbes writer, Mark Hughes, who did some serious digging, learned that Marvel got the rights back to the Hulk back in 2005.

List of NETFLIX New Releases For July 2015

Netflix released a PR announcing what new offerings they will have in the month of July. There's a few cool titles in the list (as far as I'm concerned), but there will be something for everyone... like a Bionicle movie, Glee, a Marvel title, Hell on Wheels, and what not.

Of course with the good news is the bad, and that is that some shows have to also leave the network. That list includes Cast Away, Fried Green Tomatoes, X-Men: Evolution and so forth.

BULLSEYE is Fear Factor Without The Eating....

Bullseye on FOX is just like Fear Factor was, except without the eating gross crap.... and suddenly I realize I miss that gross eating crap. But if you are short on time, I think Bullseye misses the mark and disappoints. (Yes, that was a pun.)

If you haven't seen the latest reality game show kind of series, YOU ARE NOT MISSING anything, if you have ever watched the old show, Fear Factor. It is the same, and thus, boring.

JAMES HORNER, Dead at 61

James Horner dead at 61

Sad news today, that music composer James Horner, has died in a small plane crash out in Santa Barbara, CA. (Technically, the plane he owned crashed and the person piloting it is dead. All presumptions are that it is Mr. Horner. His assistant posted that he has passed, on her FB page.)

It's late morning the next day and the body of the pilot has yet to be confirmed as Mr. Horner, but all presumptions are this it is him. He owns several planes.

As it seems, this is a senseless tragedy when one passes away at too soon a time. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and peers.

Below is a short list of where his work/compositions could be heard:

You know, for all the marketing noise they made about the upcoming new season, the third season, of Hannibal, I had the impression this show was going like gang busters at a cannibal's fest.

But suddenly, we're hearing that the show has been cancelled by NBC.

It will run out its current season, as scheduled, so don't fret there.

RECTIFY Returns To Sundance In Early July

Rectify airs on Sundance TV for its third season premiere, starting July 9th, 2015.

Rectify is a dark drama about the frailty of human tolerances and the suffering others must endure because of it.  It's an excellent and slow burn. If you're curious about the show, Sundance is also airing a catch up TV marathon of the first two seasons on July 4th. They're calling it a DVR marathon.

Check out the details below in the press release Sundance sent out to press:

If you are headed to the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con, and are a fan of some of Syfy's offerings, you might want to check out their panel and screening schedule.

A note on The Expanse: This series is based on a book trilogy that was such  a fun read, that I actually paid the full, over-priced price for the kindle editions. (I don't believe in full-priced kindle book.) This was a great story and it is Syfy's to screw up. I look forward to this series.

ABC's BATTLEBOTS Premiere Is An Old Idea With Nothing New

I had DVR'd ABC's new series, Battlebots. And to be honest I am glad I did DVR'd it.

When I pulled up Battlebots on my DVR, I jacked up the ff'ing mode. Unless I missed something, the one-hour "action" series had three bot fights and a serious amount of back story on how the teams built their bots.

Review of Ballers, starring Dwayne Johnson, on HBO

Just caught HBO's series premiere of Ballers, starring Dwayne Johnson. If you saw the 1996  Tom Cruise movie, Jerry Macguire, this is the serious serious version of that flick, using a financial adviser rather than a sports agent, but with a really good looking star.

The outline for the show says "A series centered around a group of football players and their families, friends, and handlers."

Ballers on HBO is executive produced bu Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson which is one heck of a combo, what with Wahlberg's track record of producing shows, and Johnson, whose production record includes The Hero, Snitch and a few more, I have a good feeling about where this series can go?

Upcoming SHARKNADO Week Programming On Syfy

As we all know, Sharknado is one of Syfy's bigger hokey movie hits that they have ever seen. Hokey, as in B-Movie fun, from, of all places, The Asylum. With Sharknado 3 coming up on July 22nd, there's more to this premiere than meets the eye, or television schedule.

In fact, starting July 18th, Syfy will be hosting the second annual Sharknado programming week. I know, exciting, isn't it?

Classic Reflections: EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS (1956)

Earth vs The Flying Saucers review

Today's Classic Reflections movie review is on Earth Vs the Flying Saucers (1956). A guest post by Sybil.

The story in Earth Vs the Flying Saucers is set in “present times” meaning 1956. In the beginning of the film a narrator tells us that folk all over the world are seeing flying saucers and the government is seen hard at work collecting the stories from ordinary citizens, ala Project Bluebook, etc..

After the movie's titles, a scientist, Dr. Russel Marvin (Hugh Marlow) and his wife, Carol (Joan Taylor) are on their way to a rocket launch when they see a flying saucer. They’re not thrilled and they certainly are not telling anyone. Their project, called, Sky Hook, is an ambitious plan to launch satellites into orbit around the earth to collect atmospheric data needed to eventually “realize an ancient dream” of space exploration.

The problem is that although the scientists have sent up 11 satellites, they have lost radio contact with all of them (except the last one they launched at the beginning of the movie.) The DOD is not happy about funding more. This is told to Dr. Marvin by none other than his father-in-law, a general who just got back from a trip to Panama.  He went there to check out debris that fell out of the sky, turns out it was the remains of one of the Sky Hook satellites.

About SUPERNATURAL’s Jared Padalecki’s Sling

Redirected from Brusimm.com:

Over the last few episodes of Supernatural, we see that Sam (Jared Padalecki) is ambling around from scene to scene, and episode to episode with his arm in a sling.  It is in a sling due to a beating that Sam took from a vengeful, obsessive character.

Usually when a character gets a beat down in most shows, the injuries don’t exist from episode to episode. Or at least not as persistent as it has been in Supernatural.

So I became curious and did some web snooping.

Turns out, per multiple sources, that Padalecki was fooling around, wrestling with Osric Chau, who played Kevin Tran on Supernatural, when they pulled a move that resulted in Jared dislocating his shoulder!

Really? Osric put the moves on Jared and took him down?  OK, I do not know the details, and when boys frolic and play hard, sometimes they get hurt.

At least they didn’t put an eye out! LOL.

So the sling that “Sam” is wearing is real gang! And the Supernatural creative team wrote it into the story nicely. Well, as best they could.

Yes, That’s A Different Actress Playing Naevia in ‘Spartacus Vengeance’

I’ve been catching up on my Spartacus: Vengeance episodes and following the path that Spartacus has been taking with his band of rebel/freed gladiators and other folk.  It’s vexing to see how things are going, and yet, fully entertaining at the same time.

But if you had not noticed, Crixus’ girl, Naevia is looking quite a bit different.  And there’s a reason for that.

The actress that used to play Naevia, Lesley-Ann Brandt , in season 1 (Spartacus Blood and Sand) and the studio could not negotiate an acceptable contractual renewal and she moved on.

So Starz had to find themselves a replacement actress to fill the role in season 2 (Spartacus Vengeance) and they did in the form of Cynthia Addai-Robinson.

This is a great breakout role for Cynthia but I have to say, when you swap out cast, I wish they’d found someone who looks more closely like the first actress… because it’s really distracting.  She’s much thinner and her hair looks different enough.  Just distracting.

So if you were wondering if you were losing it, you’re not.  Starz lost Lesley-Ann Brandt.
