JUSTICE LEAGUE DOOM Animated Feature Review

JUSTICE LEAGUE DOOM animated review

This is a quick review of the DC animated feature, Justice League Doom, with the voice talent of Kevin Conroy, Tim Daly, Susan Eisenberg, Nathan Fillion, and Michael Rosenbaum...

"Vandal Savage uses stolen information from Batman's secret files to mastermind a plan to exterminate the Justice League."

This film loosely based on Mark Waid's JLA comic story arc, "JLA: Tower of Babel".

-

The story opens with Batman scoping out a location, one that is hidden by a hologram, and finds The Royal Flush gang stealing diamonds. But this is more than that. It's about multi-dimensional interfaces, a technology the Flush gang has, but seems completely out of their league of use.

Whatever Happened To the True Bloopers And Honest Trailers AGE OF ULTRON

Recently Marvel released their bloopers reel that is associated with Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron. Which already devalues one extra feature you might find on the DVD or Blu-ray release if you were going to buy it. But that point is for another day. But the timing is impeccable, being that the DVD/BD is coming out in a few days.

Today, I was looking over this publicly released bloopers reel and it took me back to the days of when blooper reels actually had honest to goodness gaffs in them. But this recent reel was not of the kind.

In fact it felt so staged that it reminded of back in the day when blooper were real. Today, they feel choreographed, set to music and staged. And in this reel, there was a moment or two that I swear might have been a real bloop or the massively inexplicable giggles that sometimes break out when the tension of filming finally breaks with one of the cast.

New on NETFLIX in October 2015

What's premiering in October 2015 on Netflix

Netflix distributed a press release announcing what's new and what's going from their video distribution service.

Among the titles of note, premiering on the 'Flix, we have

American Horror Story: Freak Show (Season 4)
Arrow: Season 3
iZombie: Season 1
Jane the Virgin: Season 1
Last Man Standing: Season 4
Supernatural: Season 10
The Flash: Season 1
The Originals: Season 2

I don't see any movies that got me in a tizzy.

-

An example list of things that are being expired off the service include, (I say expired because Netflix is beholden to whatever carrier contracts they sign, and those contracts have expiration dates.)

Caprica: Season 1 (Heck, I didn't even know that was on there. This wasn't a bad show, but the fans wanted more space fights, so it crashed and burned in the ratings while Syfy jerked it around from one night to another and another...)
Destination Truth: Season 4
Machine Gun Preacher (2011)
Saturday Night Live: The 2010s: Season 37
The Exorcist (1973)
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
The Phantom of the Opera (1989)
Twilight (2008)

- - -

Here's the complete list of additions and exits, by date*:

*(Psst: I'm using multiple sources for these lists and they actually conflict with each other in some cases while one totally skips listing October 1st while two others have completely different listings. I'm not sure just now hard it is to read a press release but apparently there is some challenge involved. ( The same goes for shows exiting the service.) I'm not sure what's up, but I'll be applying for press access so I don't have to depend on these inconsistent forms of reporting.)

New on DVD (OUTLANDER), New In Theaters This Week (THE MARTIAN)

This week's new DVD/BD sales include An American in Hollywood and the second volume of season one of Outlander. (Don't you love how they dig you for more money by splitting seasons up?)  Other shows coming out to own this week include iZombie, Bones, and Grimm. A quick list is farther down.

-

New movies coming out in theaters this week include the Matt Damon starrer, The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott. I know some folks that seem pretty disillusioned by Scott after that Prometheus bullshit and aren't even going to try and see this flick, but the premise looks enticing.

Rated PG-13 and running 141 minutes,

"During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive."

Director: Ridley Scott
Stars: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara

After 17 reviews it has a score of 74. That's worth taking note of.

-

The Walk

PG, running 123 minutes,

"In 1974, high-wire artist Philippe Petit recruits a team of people to help him realize his dream: to walk the the immense void between the World Trade Center towers."

Director: Robert Zemeckis
Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Charlotte Le Bon, Ben Kingsley, James Badge Dale

Critic scores, after 27 reviews, sit at 71.

- - -

Here's the list of new DVD and Blu-ray titles this week, with their IMDb scores. You can either hit up my DVD Store in the side-bar or fly on over to Amazon's new releases and such if you want to peruse more titles.

An American In Hollywood
imdb: 8.8

Outlander: Season One - Volume Two
imdb: 8.8

Fresh Off the Boat: Season 1
imdb: 8.1

iZombie: Season 1
imdb: 8.0
(Though I was not drawn to this show via the marketing a few folks I know said I should try iZombie, and sure enough I found it fun, quirky and it still had a solid story underneath it all. I think it's worth a try for a few episodes to see how you feel about it. I love the mystery of how the heck our heroine become a zombie.)

Bones Season 10
imdb: 7.9

Jane the Virgin: Season 1
imdb: 7.6

Grimm: Season 4
imdb: 7.5
(Grimm is Grimm and that spells the usual amount of fun that you've come to expect from the previous seasons being continued into this fourth season release.)

Spy
imdb: 7.2

Mom: Season 2
imdb: 7.0

Entourage
imdb: 6.9

Aloft
imdb: 6.6

Cop Car
imdb: 6.3

The Slap
imdb: 6.0
(I'm really surprised this got a 6 and I am wondering if it is not coming back, considering they are not marketing this as the first season of this poorly received series. It's an interesting premise but huh. Cinema Static's review of The Slap)

Zipper
imdb: 5.6

Unexpected
imdb: 5.5

Poltergeist
imdb: 5.0

Return to Sender
imdb: 5.0

CASTLE Season 8 Premiere Part 2, Review

CASTLE Season 8 Premiere Part 2

Last week I railed on and on about the series premiere where we watched what looked like yet one more Beckett vendetta as Castle found himself chasing Beckett's ghost, so to speak. But this week, in the second of two parts of the eighth season premiere, we learned what was happening and why Beckett went on this vendetta/run.

The following has spoilers of a sort.

In the second episode of Castle's season premiere, we learned that an entire team of Beckett's former team mates from her Washington D.C. team have been killed and she was next. The conspiracy afoot had people trying to figure things out, but anyone Becket talked to about it found them dead later on.

Are WB And DC Showing No Faith In SUPERMAN Movies? And Rumored BvS Movie Spoilers

Does WB trust in Batman more than Superman?

The other day I got to wondering if WB And DC aren't Showing any Faith In Superman Movies?

Recently there has been some noise about the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice movie and that being, who has more screen time in it? Will Batman be dominant in the film or will Superman? Or will they share equal screen time? Rumors and news bits suggest that this is more of a Batman-centric film while the man playing Superman, Henry Cavill, says there is plenty of Superman in the movie.

But folks are suggesting other things too because what used to be on the distribution list of movies from WB/DC for their slate of upcoming hero movies.

Between what I'm seeing with their schedule and what I'm hearing about the upcoming BvS film, I started wondering what's up?

-

Some time ago WB put out a schedule of movies they want to make, as they compete with Marvel's Cinematic Universe. In that early list was a Man of Steel 2.  Awesome. Because the first one pretty much dusted any previous origins and story film that was put out there. Then again, Christoper Nolan was involved.

Then Batman Vs Superman was announced and later as more and more casting of hero characters were making their way to the headlines, the film name was then being called Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice.

Then Ben Affleck was hired to play Batman.

CSI Series Finale - The Old Gang Is Back This One Last Time

CSI Series Finale review

The series finale of CSI started and ended the 16th season that the series aired. After 114 award nominations and 63 award wins, this run has come to a close with a single, two-hour TV-movie.

Despite the chance to make it extra special, the opening musical montage only showed the recent season cast. I thought producers could have taken a bit of extra effort and included the appearing alumni cast, but they chose not to.

In this series finale, a suicide bomber blows up a casino. The casino is owned by Catherine Willows (Now an FBI agent) and clues lead to the involvement of Lady Heather, so the team calls in Gil Grissom. (Because file notes just can't cut it I guess) Plus, Willows wants in on the action, despite rules and regulations. (Which don't make for good drama.)

After the first half hour or so we've now seen Jim Brass (who works for Willows), Catherine and Gil. Obviously missing from this episode are Nick (George Eads), and Julie (Elisabeth Shue), for whatever reason. (In the episode we are privy to a super quick glance of a plaque with 'Jules' name on it wity a set of dates. It is presumed from inference that she died. But other sources say that these two did not want to be a part of this finale. (And to be honest, with all the exits and returns of cast, I have to wonder just what was going in behind-the-scenes!)

HEROES REBORN Premiere Review

Heroes Reborn review

The series premiere of Heroes Reborn starts out in a moment a year before our present-day narrative with Noah (Jack Coleman) recapping a voice mail to his daughter, Claire. In it we hear him explain how things have changed, as he walks through a convention that joins both humans and evos (Short for Evolved, with powers) as one. The convention feels like an X-Men convention as people are flitting about, sharing and demonstrating their powers for all to see.

But then, a massive explosion rocks the event, killing most of them.  We are then shown various moments in time after the explosion...  We watch a man being pursued, but he manages to escape by turning invisible. We then see a man dragging a heavy weight, clasped to his wrist, across a field of ice. But his pursuers are coming. He cuts off his hand and flies away. And finally, we see that even the Canadians are taking culture swabs from people before they cross over into the border in their cars.

Several events unfold that explains the nature of the world that mutants have to deal with, and it is not a pretty place.

Who Was Roberta Custer, CSI

Who Was Roberta Custer, CSI

At the end of the series finale of CBS's CSI, there was an 'in memory' spot saying "in loving memory of Roberta Custer."

Roberta Custer was many things throughout her career, starting her acting career in the 1960's with what was known as the Godzilla Rainbow Troupe.  She helped found the Kingston Mines Theater, and was reported to be instrumental in the creation of the Remains Theatre. It was then that she met William Petersen.

Roberta later became Petersen's personal assistant and had been such for the last few decades.

As his assistant she helped him organize his schedules and read scripts to help provide guidance and counsel, and as Petersen put it, "mostly friendship."

According to sources she had passed away while house sitting William's house.

UPDATE: A few folks have left comments about there being no images of Roberta. Show executive Anthony Zuiker tweeted the following:

TRANFORMERS Haters, Unite! (But There's Good News for Fans Too)

Transformers Honest Trailers treatment

The Transformers film franchise is a very unique kind of franchise. It stirs the blood of the imagination in some while it stirs the blood of the sanity of others.

One one hand, many criticisms of the film series are not incorrect as they rip into what seems like shoddy sequence editing and the like, but on the other hand, these films have raked in billions at the box office.

Age of Extinction (2014): $1.09B (Worldwide) $245MM (USA)
Dark of the Moon (2011): $1.12B (Worldwide), $352MM (USA)
Revenge of the Fallen (2009): $836MM (Worldwide), $402MM (USA)
Transformers (2007): $709MM (Worldwide) | $319MM (USA)

The pockets of the many outweigh the sanity of the few. (Yes, I just twisted up a Star Trek line.)  Though I find it interesting that the domestic numbers seem to be floundering, despite inflation, the rest of the world eats this franchise up. Do they not have enough good stuff on TV to possibly make the movie theater the go-to spot for this genre? Then again, ticket prices overseas do tend to cost more than our domestic prices.

Either way, the films are either flawed to the dramatic critical fans, and eye-candy spit-drooling fun to the masses, much like how reality-TV wins over the masses who want to sit on the couch and drool, like Homer Simpson might.

LIMITLESS Series Premiere Review: (This Looks Fun!)

The series premiere of Limitless hit viewers with a fast paced start that just kept going throughout the entire hour. An hour that was very entertaining.

Part of that entertainment factor comes from the combined talent of the cast and production crew. The writers of the series can count shows like Medium, Jericho, White Collar, & Revenge in their resumes. Producers of the show include Bradley Cooper, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Marc Webb. Yes, that Webb.

We have a TV series that extends the world of the 2011 movie by the same name that starred Bradley Cooper. But this time around we follow Brian (Jake McDorman [American Sniper]) who does not quite have the life he ever envisioned, happening upon NZT, a drug that jacks up the brain and then makes you literally the smartest person on the planet. And being the smartest person on the planet, well, there's no limits for that person.

Brian finds himself caught up in the middle of a series of murders and finds himself being pursued by Agent Rebecca Harris, played by Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter). Her boss is played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

CASTLE Season 8 Premiere Review (Another Vendetta?)

CASTLE season premiere review

The eighth season premiere of Castle hit the TV waves (or cables). Beckett is now the Captain, and Castle gives her a beautiful bracelet to celebrate her first day as captain and she tells Castle she's headed off for a meeting. But she wasn't.

Castles daughter, Alexis, has somehow managed to take over the private investigations office of Castle's, and is doing a great job with it.

While Javier and Kevin are at it again. Or is that, still? Either way, their routines never get old and they are the backbone of the show sometimes. These guys could use a spinoff, but then again, cool things in shows don't always do well on their own. They get old, so maybe they're perfect where they are.

But I digress.

So as we get a few minutes into the episode, Castle is called to a crime scene, then spots Beckett's new bracelet in a pool of blood. And the mysteries circling Beckett start all over again.

BLINDSPOT Series Premiere Review (Not A Bad Start)

BLINDSPOT Series Premiere Review

The Blindspot series premiere starts out with a bag being found in Times Square, containing the center of our mystery, the naked but fully tattooed body of "Jane Doe," played by Jaimie Alexander (Thor). A little bit later we meet the second primary character of the series, Sullivan Stapleton (300: Rise of an Empire).

This show delivered us a puzzle, and while telling the story, pulled the character pieces slowly together to help work on the puzzle of who she is. The biggest puzzle is that she has the FBI agent's  name tattooed to her back. That being Stapleton's character.

And there's one last character who is part of her forgotten past and seemingly her present as he starts to show up on the outskirts of events within the story and her foggy memory.

Hmm.

Unlike the Minority Report premiere, this premiere episode felt more evolved and mature in its presentation. We got a story and it seems we are going to be learning about the characters during the plot.

How refreshing.

MINORITY REPORT Series Premiere, A Review of Sorts (But Should We Bother?)

MINORITY REPORT Series Premiere, A Review

In this review, I might sound a bit meh about this new show. Don't worry, I am!

The series premiere of the TV series, Minority Report, started out showing us how the precogs came to be and what happened to them after the initial movie from 2002. We jump to Washington DC, 2065, 10 to 11 years after events in the film.

The precogs are all grown up and one of them is still trying to help from his part of the fragmented visions he gets. He seems to only get parts of the vision, so it's a struggle to see the whole scene.

Then we meet the team of cops we'll be following, and the story telling seems to all fall apart.

We watch the cops bitch and whine and compete for the solve. We blindly jump to some scene where they corner the bad guy and our primary cop somehow shows up getting the drop on the perp. We never see how she sneaks up on a man in the middle of an open warehouse, but poof, there she is.

To be honest this jumping around with quickie scenes seems a little fragmented at best as they try to introduce characters while trying to pack a story into the first episode between character discoveries. To me, that's always been a warning sign.

Stark Sands plays the precog, Meagan Good, the cop. The other cop who she butts heads with is Wilmer Valderrama, who contributed very little to his character in this episode, except to look arrogant.

More JEEPERS CREEPERS Coming Soon

Jeepers Creepers news

I have to say, one of my favorite or guilty pleasures in life includes the Jeepers Creepers movie franchise. The story telling is adequate, the action is enticing, though somewhat predictable, but they have one bad ass bad guy that can't seem to be beat. He's creepy, powerful and nearly unstoppable.

The first Jeepers Creepers (2001) movie set the tone for what the monster is all about. (I won't spoil that for you.) It starred Justin Long and Gina Philips as wayward siblings on a road trip in a piece of S*! car, while encountering what seemed like a road rage driving maniac driving a molester's old van.

And then it turns horrible from there.

It was written and directed by Victor Salva, whose resume includes other projects like Powder (1995) and...  um, well, OK. So this is his baby.

-

He also wrote and directed the sequel, Jeepers Creepers II. Ray Wise and Luke Edwards starred in this flick, while a busload of pretty and good looking teenagers becomes the creature's latest victims.

Static Bits: PACIFIC RIM 2, GODZILLA & KING KONG

PACIFIC RIM 2, GODZILLA & KING KONG worlds coming together?
I do not know what to think about this except to say that we all better treasure our Pacific Rim Blu-rays folks.

Word on the street is that any kind of development for the sequel to Pacific Rim has been halted due to some off-screen, off-set kind of technical troubles that only brew when people mash minds and don't agree on things.

It seems a bit convoluted but some guy ticked off Universal and WB, where he seems to take credit for helping fund movies. It's a weird and confusing piece that only true deep-insider type people might get, but the end game is that the actions or words in that piece have lent itself to seeing development stop for Pacific Rim 2.

Part of the issues, as quoted by several source sites is that the first film took around $190M to make, not counting marketing and distribution. Part of the reservations was how "little" the film made domestically, barely breaking $100M.

Even though overseas traffic made the take up to $400M, it just seems that PR did not pull enough domestic fanboys out of the closet and into theaters. Despite the incredible production values and pure fun that the film represented to the giant monster genre.

ZOO Season Finale Review (What The Hell Was That?)

CBS summer series Zoo had its season finale. I ended up coming away from that last moment as WTH?

-

When Zoo premiered, I thought it was an interesting  premise but was not sure about it. The series cast included

James Wolk
Kristen Connolly
Nonso Anozie
Nora Arnezeder &
Billy Burke.

To be honest, it was a good cast and this was a first where I watched Billy Burke play someone who was not an ass-kicking hero. Instead, he was a desperate, divorced dad, who was more a punching bag than anything else.

The show held my respect up until that last episode, when they rushed to finish out the summer season, as if the writers weren't prepared to write it!

There will be light outline spoilers following suit here... unless you've read the book this show was based off of, written by James Patterson.

GRACELAND Season Finale - An Intense Reflection

GRACELAND Season Finale review

If you watch Graceland and you've seen the season finale, then like me, I bet you are going "wow, what the hell just happened?" to yourself.

This was a tough season for everyone involved, with Mike's addiction, Catherine's pregnancy, Paige's multiple issues... I mean it was crazy how much heavy developments went down in this third season.

But the mayhem that followed Briggs and all his shenanigans kept you on the fence, wondering what the hell is he up to? He's a serious player that you can't trust, but he definitely plays his angles in a sharp and vicious fashion, no matter what happened to whom.

Why Did Paramount Move STAR TREK BEYOND Release Date?

Star Trek Beyond movie news

In case you had not heard, the Star Trek Beyond release date has been pushed back. If you are wondering why, well, here's the gist of it from the side of the movie industry:

With the release of Tarzan on July 1 2016, it seems that WB has snagged every single IMAX theater there is, locking Star Trek out of the large format theaters. Which whether it is or not, seems like a smooth tactical move on WB's part.

This prompted Paramount to push their release date back from July 8th, to July 22nd, 2016 so they can shove this bad boy Trek film into IMAX theaters.

Jenna Coleman Leaving DOCTOR WHO; What Is Up With People Leaving This Show?

Doctor Who: Jenna Coleman is leaving the show. Find out why...

First it was rumor, now it is official, that Jenna Coleman announced in an interview that she's filmed her last scene of Doctor Who and has "left the Tardis."

She's leaving the time traveling series of Doctor Who to take the lead role in an eight-part ITV series called Victoria. She will be playing Queen Victoria in the series, or at least what I presume to be a younger version of the public figurehead prior to running a country.

Apparently she and show creator Steven Moffat had been working on a good story and exit point for the last 18 months or so. Or so she says.

Good luck to Jenna in her new career path as Victoria.

-

But egads, what is up with this show? They go through cast at a bit faster rate than most do. They go through both Doctors and companions on a near-regular basis.

Recently we've had Christopher Eccleston (14 episodes), David Tennant (49), Matt Smith (54) play "the Doctor," with Peter Capaldi playing the 12th rendition of the character.

On companions we've had a slew, with Billie Piper (35), Karen Gillan (37) & Arthur Darvill (27), Freema Agyeman (20) (sort of), with smatterings of repeat appearances of Alex Kingston and Catherine Tate.

DANCING WITH THE STARS (DWTS) Season Premiere

DANCING WITH THE STARS (DWTS) Season Premiere

I just watched Dancing With the Stars off my DVR, and that's the only way I'll watch it. I'll explain that in a moment.

-

After watching the season premiere of "personalities" of whom some I've never even heard of, I see the same old stuff. The poor judges digging deep to come up with constructive observations for people who can't dance or even be able to move.

Then there's the obvious, where the judges gave Gary Busey 5's across the board when he could barely even move. So obviously he'll probably be the one sacrificial lamb that goes the farthest despite not having a viable dancing gene in his body.

I'm not bashing on him... I'm just saying.

The reality TV star women who are known for their, um, off-putting defensiveness, and being, um, difficult.

Then there's the jockey, who surprisingly, admitted to there being a lot of concussions in the business, and looked like he had a learning disability trying to absorb the dance moves.

VIKINGS News for Season Four

For those of you who are History Channel's Vikings series fans, I have some news that I looked up when a site fan asked me some questions about the show.

For one, season four will be returning in 2016.

Ivor the Boneless will have a more critical role in the season.

One source says that there will be more episodes in s4 than s3, but only one source says that so I'm not sure how real that is because IMDb is showing 10 episodes. I think someone was trying to punk me.

Kit Harington Returns to GAME OF THRONES!

Kit Harington returning to Game of Thrones

Well, an article out on the web is getting some traction with Game of Thrones fans and their imaginations. It seems that Kit Harington will be returning to the sets of HBO's Game of Thrones.

Now we all knew that he was already spotted headed to the production sets a few months ago, but now in an interview Kit has gone on to say that he's had to pass on some movie roles due to his commitment to GoT.

While trying to be coy about it, he indicated that he's under contract with the show into his thirties.

He turns 29 in December of this year, so you can do the interpretation on how long he's contracted under Game of Thrones.

So what does this mean?
