MYTHBUSTERS Returns, Hiddleston As LOKI In Question, THE TICK More Serious?

Not sure if you heard but the Science Channel picked up the Mythbusters franchise, but there's a hitch or two.

First, Science will be hosting a show, Search for the Next MythBusters. This will be a reality show where people are vying for the gig of hosting the new show.

So the show will now carry on, but with a different set of hosts.  I guess.

We'll see where this ends up...

[ .cnet. ]

- - -

I don't know how true they are, but there are headlines out there saying that Tom Hiddleston may not be playing Loki too much longer.

The ever so lovable Loki has made appearances in three different Marvel movies, and fans love to hate or love Hiddleston's quirky representation of the trickster brother.

I used to out and out hate Loki in the comics, but Hiddleston has made him an enjoyable, chaotic good character.

Now, in an interview about one of his latest movies, the Hank Williams biopic titled I Saw the Light, he was asked about his stint in the upcoming Thor movie, and he said the following:

"‘Thor 3' will be cool because I’ve not done it for four years. I love working with Chris [Hemsworth]. This will be my last time out of the gate."

Say what? That can't be right! Can it?

Well, while others are focusing on the first headline, the statement from Hiddleston continues, when asked what he meant by that by saying,

I don’t know! Honestly, I don’t know,” he says with a shrug. “They haven’t got their ducks in a row yet. They make it up as they go along.”

BATMAN v SUPERMAN: What WAS Wrong With It???

OK, so I gave Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice a succinct and mildly glowing review here on Cinema Static. And I did that because despite multiple plot holes and issues, it was just damn fun to see this idea of Snyder's plop down on the screen and actually make the film's two and half hour run-time seem not so long. And I forced myself to ignore the obvious holes in the spaghetti strainer of a story.

And yes, as a fan watching his comic book heroes come to life, fulfilling a mythological duel, it was heaven!

And no, really, it did not feel that long and that's one of my criteria for rating it as I did.

But if you want to be a bisnitchy person and hack at all the little details and flaws of the film, BvS definitely makes it easy to do that.

And with that in mind,

Big, Bat-Spoilers. Period.

- - - - -

One of the biggest plot points in the film is how Lex Luthor tricked both Batman and Superman into fighting. With Batman totally zoned in on how Superman helped destroy the city in his fight with Zod, Bruce becomes totally obsessed with the idea if he can destroy the city any time he wants, and has that ability to do so, well, he has to be taken down. Period.

BLACKLIST Spinoff, AQUAMAN Less Serious, A Tatum Dance Show, Sarah Palin???

The May 12th episode of The Blacklist, will star Famke Janssen. And that episode, if received well enough, could act as the "backdoor" pilot episode for a potential spinoff of The Blacklist.

I do love The Blacklist. But I think what makes it so appealing is who is in it, not what it is about.

If you pull out our stars and replace them with other cast, it becomes just another spy action thriller on TV without James Spader. And to be honest, he makes the show.

But I do love Janssen and it's possible she could pull off a suave, sneaky underworld character. We'll have to wait for the episode to air!

- - -

So the standing rumors in life are that the DC/WB film world should be less humorous and more dramatic than Marvel movies. Great, got that.

But now, according to a piece over on Comic Book Movie, James Wan says that in the upcoming Aquaman film, there will be a different tone to the sea-going film.

He's been noted to saying Aquaman will be much lighter in tone than Batman v Superman.

Which is great... except for one thing... in the DC world, Aquaman is a pretty somber character. Or at least what I've read in the past, he was.

Then again, this could just be another BS marketing line dropped on bloggers to get headlines, because god knows, we fell for enough of those during the Batman v Superman marketing campaign.

We'll see. Right?

VOLTRON on Netflix, THE TICK on Amazon, The FLASH on SUPERGIRL

In case you had not heard, Voltron is coming to Netflix, in a production that joins Netflix and DreamworksTV in a collaborative effort. So yes, Voltron returns in an all new adventure.

Netflix just released the first trailer for the series. And to be honest, it seems to be the same old Voltron, rehashed for 2016.

But hey, for fans of the franchise, anything is a good thing, right?

( )

- - -

Juust in case you had not heard, The Tick is coming to Amazon in a new live-action series.

And cast as The Tick is Peter Serafinowicz.

Other cast characters includes Arthur (Griffin Newman) and Arthur’s sister Dot (Valorie Curry).

- - -

It finally happened... we got a crossover episode of The CW's Flash with CBSs Supergirl.

BATMAN v SUPERMAN Is Being Punished By Movie Critics

There comes a time when one suddenly realizes just how focused movie critics are, in their own world of movie reviews. And in so being, are incredibly disconnected by the true fan. This being the case, this leaves fans with no really good resources for deciding if they want to see a movie or not.

Case in point... critics absolutely love to trash on the Transformers franchise and yet, multiple billions later, the film franchise now has its own "cinematic universe," helmed by some top-notch quality writers from this point forth!

My next case in point, is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it sits at 29%, per the professional critics, while 73% of the real audience loved it.

Over on IMDb, it has a 7.4 / 10 score. (At this time that I wrote this.)

- - -

Admittedly, the chorus of movie critics trashing on the film had even myself worried, despite my never trusting the entrenched critic. They're kind of like politicians... playing to their own club and not the people they serve.

But something made me go to the movie, and to be honest, WOW, I was very glad I went.

- - -

If you're a mere movie-goer going to see the movie, I can see where there might be some issues with your movie experience.

But if you're a fan of the source comics for this movie, sure, there was some jumping around and a few things just popping up for annoying reasons, but it all made perfect sense. To the franchise fans.

How To Learn What Movie Critics To Trust!

So here we, the weekend after the bashing of Batman vs Superman by movie critics.  According to critics, if you chose to believe them, then this is one of the worse superhero films to ever hit the movie theater. (Apparently they did not see the latest Mad Max movie)

But I suspect that you, my readers, are smarter than the average bear and have learned to not completely trust the establishment of movie critics, but rather, trust your gut.

Now in trusting your gut, that could mean any of a few things.

-Being a comic book fan of yesteryear, you will support most comic book movies.

-You have specific blogs you like and trust when they write reviews.

-You get that the standard movie critic has no clue about what you like

-Judged off movie trailers that a film could or could not be that good, when it hits theaters.

What Shows Did CBS Renew For the 2016/17 Season?

CBS Renewal List For the 2016/17 Season?

CBS announced it's renewals for the 2016/2017 TV season.  Check out which shows they renewed and curiously, what show they did not renew or announce... yet.

2 Broke Girls,
Blue Bloods,
Hawaii Five-0,
Madam Secretary,
NCIS: Los Angeles,
The Amazing Race,

So what's missing here?  There's no Criminal Minds, Supergirl, CSI: Cyber, Limitless, & Code Black for the short list.  Rumors suggest that Supergirl is coming back, but rumors can mean nothing.

BATMAN v SUPERMAN: The True Fan Will Love It (SPOILER FREE Review)

BATMAN v SUPERMAN film review
Let me start by saying that there's a reason I NEVER buy movie tickets during pre-sale time blocks. The marketing is designed to suck you in and make you think you want to spend money on a film.

As the reviews keep pouring in, it has become evident that the newest DC Entertainment film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is not quite living up to folks' expectations. was not all that many hoped it would be cracked up to be.

Or at least, it's not what the "professional" critics are saying.

- - -

As we speak, critics scores on Rotten Tomatoes are slowly pulling the Tomatometer down. At the time of this writing, it has hit 29%.

And once again, I think there is a huge disconnect between franchise fans and the realm of serious, critically acclaimed movie reviewers.

I've seen the various review statements...

"spent too much time on too many plots..."

"too dark and brooding..."

"missing the humor..."

But critics that I trust are not panning it and hence, whey went out see it. And glad I did.

Zack Snyder definitely left his touch on the film, with his stylistic approach to things. And I don't think I can say much more without giving things away.

The tone of the film seems to have grown out of the atmosphere of the Dark Knight films, hence, Batman brings the tone with him to the film.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Is Getting Trashed By Critics, Should Fans Worry?

"Ruh roh Shaggy!"

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Is Getting Trashed By Critics,

Now that the embargo has been lifted on movie reviews, critics are chiming in about Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and right now, it is not a pretty sight.

Over on the critic score rating site, Rotten Tomatoes, critics are generally giving the film a bit of a pass, with the Tomato Meter sitting at 42% after 77 counted reviews. (The day prior, it was sitting at the mid 30s!)

But over on IMDb, where the fans are chiming in, we have almost 9,000 users having given the film a 9.4/10.***

***I never trust the first few thousand votes cast, because being a suspicious consumer, I always assume the studio puts up cast and crew to vote for their own movies.

To back that, I had to ask where 8,869 votes came from when the movie has only had a few movie premieres... Mexico City, Los Angeles, New York City and London.  Could nearly 9,000 votes come from these screenings?***

The film opens on March 23rd (today) in 12 countries.  As I write this, I don't see the rating numbers changing, so I don't think people have chimed in from those countries yet.

The film opens in over 35 other countries on the 24th.

And it opens in 26 other countries on the 25th of March, including here in the U.S..

I hope that movie goers start chiming in on IMDb and RT over the next few days and we can see how the film stacks up with real movie or franchise fans.

What I think I might be seeing is what I have coined "The Transformers Effect!"

Is Norman Reedus Leaving THE WALKING DEAD? Truth or BS?

Is Norman Reedus leaving The Walking Dead. (Reedus as Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead)

There's been a lot of noise in various websites about the possibility of Norman Reedus leaving AMC's The Walking Dead, the appearance of Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and who just may be dying when Negan shows up. (BTW, from what I can tell, that's perfect casting for Negan.)

(The following suggests various spoilers for the upcoming episodes of The Walking Dead...   and I call out the only out-and-out spoiler, sort of, from last weekend's show, without actually saying it, but the heavy implications are there. SO READ AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE if you have not seen the latest episode yet, or are worried about being spoiled by the source comic plots at this point.)

- - -

The first inkling (clue/over-reaction) that Norman MIGHT be leaving the show was when he started filming a new show on AMC where he's riding a motorcycle around the country. Of course this set fans a tizzy on if he was leaving or not.

But I'm not sure that's a valid worry. Actors can do multiple projects at once, though when it comes to super popular shows, usually we don't see that.

But if it will help calm you down, since Norman Reedus joined The Walking Dead in 2010, he's done a 11 other projects that did not involve him playing Daryl Dixon, including his latest non-TWD project, a movie titled Triple 9.

Then I saw a site, Gallery Roulette, where they said he was leaving the show by the end of the season. BUT...  if you read the piece carefully, you saw some clues that this wasn't a real article. They finished the piece up with an "April Fool's" call out on everyone.

But this site seemed to be one of the first with this kind of headline... and I'm sure this link bait is working pretty well for them.  And as anyone knows, the internet rarely finishes reading an entire article never mind get past a title! SO it's been getting a ton of traction out there, including being constantly referenced to by Facebook.

NBC Ready to Cut From DISH Over Carrier Negotiations

If Sunday comes and you can't find any NBC product, or the Syfy channel on DISH Network, that's because NBC doesn't give a crap about us.

- - -

Dish and NBC are at it again, with NBC threatening Dish's viewers with cutting all NBC programming out of its lineup this Sunday, 3-20-16, if the two can't come to an agreement.

With Dish getting cuts from NBC products, they would be pulling

CNBC, and

NBC, or it's cotrolling company, NBCUniversal is asking for fair market value, or, the same that Dish is paying to other distributors.

But for now, we get grandstanding as they threaten to pull our entertainment from us. WTF?

There's interesting leverage on both sides of the table, the most important in how more and more people are cord-cutting and network television losing its grip on ratings.

PERSON OF INTEREST Will Be Bowing It's Final Season on May 3rd, 2016

Well, it seemed more likely than not, but back in August I asked if Person of Interest was getting cancelled  . Too many factors were pointing to this inevitable situation.

Sure enough, CBS has announced that the upcoming season of Person of Interest will be its last. It will only be 13 instead of a normal 22 episode season, and CBS is planning to scuttle the show quickly.

The new season premieres on Tuesday May 3rd, but starting on the following Monday, May 9th, we'll be getting two episodes a week.

Up until this week, no one was coming forth to give us the bad news despite fan curiosity, but CBS finally coughed up the fur-ball of cancellation.

Despite loving the show, I think AMC has made a brash move in renewing Better Call Saul for a third season, so soon in to the second. But hey, it's their show. Right? Plus, I'm thinking it's warranted. But I can't predict viewers habits sometimes.

The Ten Commandments will be in movie theaters for two days only, on March 20th and 23rd. If you're interested, check out ticket purchases here...

- - -

WGN has renewed Outsiders for a second season.

NBC renewed Little Big Shots for a second season also.

Freeform (what's that?) has renewed Shadowhunters, for a second season.

Fox announced that they've renewed Gotham for a third season.

- - -

Remember, Preacher on AMC, will be premiering on May 22nd.

Based on a 1990's comic book by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, is being called a dark and twisted supernatural drama.

It follows Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that gives him unusual powers.

BLACK PANTHER Gets New Titles And Variant Covers

BLACK PANTHER Gets New Titles And Variant Covers
I'm sure you've seen him, now that we've seen two full trailers for Captain America Civil War, right? The Black Panther...(Or if you almost don't catch your typo early enough, The Back Panter)

We've been hearing word of his showing up for some time, and aside from his country being referenced in Avengers Age of Ultron, (The source of Cap's shield material) we now see the man himself who is king of that country, T'Challa.

As the movies move forward, so too, do the comic titles, and their associated covers. And from what I see in the preview panels, his costumed has changed a bit too... from what was originally just a jump suit, to what now looks like some kind of armored or powered suit. Much like when Tony Stark upgraded Spider-Man in the comics, back in the day.

Check out this Marvel press release and previews of the variant covers to this new (to the movies) character:

STAR WARS: Are We Are Going To Drown In It? Plus The Disney Release Schedule

With the box office success of "The Force Awakens," Disney knows it made a good move in nabbing the Star Wars franchise and saving it from George Lucas. And then Disney went ahead and plotted out three new films, chapters VII, VIII and IX, plus three spinoffs to fill the void between two-year release dates.

All, I presume, to keep the toy and other markets swamped with Star Wars stuff. I mean, have you seen Target lately? Almost everything has a Star Wars version on the shelves!

But what I am worried about is now that the fans finally got a film they've been wanting to see for years upon years, will the future chapters of this franchise do as well as it did at the box office.

EVEN with box office numbers spiked by large format and 3D screening prices that are 150% that of 2D screening, we still see some incredible box office ticket sale numbers and The Force Awakens has destroyed all domestic box office numbers, monetarily, though...

Get this:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens still sits 11th on the list of number of movie tickets sold...

with Gone With The Wind still holding strong in first!

The Force Awakens has only sold an estimated 106 million movie tickets, while the original Star Wars sold 178 million tickets.

I know! Crazy how modern-day economics can outshine pure numbers!!! I'm a pure numbers kind of writer, so I enjoy seeing them.

Now, according to sources quoting a site called the Mirror, Disney is looking to plot out five more Star Wars films beyond the year 2020.

CAPTAIN AMERICA CIVIL WAR Trailer #2 Rocks, And There's Spider-Man!

Well, this second trailer for Captain America: Civil War seems to rock a ton more than the first one. That's not saying the first trailer did not rock. Just that this one rocks a ton more. It fills in a lot more information between the gaps of info we had from the first one, and adds some more great action scenes.

Now of late, the production staff has let out some press saying this is a ‘Psychological Thriller’ of sorts. I hate when they say that. The last time someone said their action flick was a ‘Psychological Thriller’, well, it fell hard and short of being just that.

But the politics here are a frustrating piece of the pie. One side believes heroes should register and be controlled and the other side says that they need to freedom to react to things they see when they're going south, and not just when the paper-work is processed and authorized.

We see more Black Panther action and then we see, at the very end, the surprise visit of the one and only, Spider-Man. Now how he fits into the story besides this quickie shot, I don't know, but OH MY GOD, could we have made him wear a brighter suit than that???

Below are the two trailers for Captain America: Civil War, starting with the new one, then the first one...

One thing I am enjoying about the Steve Rogers (Cap. America) films is that much of the heavy lifting of the background themes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seem to happen here, in the CAP films. All the politics and evolution of the films tend to happen around Rogers stories, and that makes him quite critical in the scheme of things.

I like that, because otherwise, I don't know how his character would have been received on-film, if all he ended up being was a situational character. I never gravitated to his books, but I am loving the movies.

Just saying.

Casting News for Nancy Drew, Fox's new reality series, AMC's new terror-based series, Netflix renewed a "House," and Travel Channel premiere date remider..

- - -

Sarah Shahi has been cast as the new Nancy Drew. In other news, CBS is looking to reboot Nancy Drew, where she will be playing a NYPD detective.

Did I mention previously that NCIS was renewed for two more years?

FOX has ordered a new show to series, and it is called Superhuman. It's just one more in a long list of reality TV shows. This one will test people's abilities in the areas of memory, hearing, taste, touch, smell and sight.

It's already airing in Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

AMC has ordered 10 single-hour episodes of an action/suspense show titled The Terror.

It takes place in 1847 aboard a Royal Naval ship. The story is that the ship is tasked with finding the Northwest Passage but in the process, it is attacked by a mysterious predator that stalks their crew.

It's produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free, Emjag Productions and Entertainment 360.

That's a lot of production companies.  Usually when you see that many names in a mix, it's because they want to share the cost and don't have a ton of faith in something.

As if it's news:

It's being said that Margot Robbie ALMOST wore the classic Harley Quinn outfit for the Suicide Squad movie that comic book fans have all come to know and love.  But of course she did not, since every director has to put their own touch on things and muck with the process.

In case you did not know, Zootopia just destroyed any Disney animation box office record by opening this last weekend with a $73M net. That beat out their latest animated gig of Frozen by several million.

Disney owns ABC and hence, ESPN, BTW, just in case you did not know.

I did not catch it, but then again, I am not a Johnny Depp fan, but it's been said that when the gang on The Walking Dead were making fake dead heads to help infiltrate the enemy base in this last episode, the crew apparently used a mold for one of the heads what was based on Depp's head.

Will Marvel Cross Over SHIELD And CAP 3?

Will we ever see SHIELD or other TV characters in MARVEL MOVIES?

If you remember, back in season one of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, the show had a huge stumbling block, and that being that the main thrust of the story from that season had to wait for Captain America 2 to come out before SHIELD (on TV) could react to their own organization being infiltrated. As it was in CAP 2. (The Winter Soldier)

Then once events took place in CAP 2, SHIELD was free to move forward with what became the backbone of their story and show. And once that took place, the crap story telling faded to black and we had a good show.

But therein lies an interesting situation.

Marvel TV and Marvel Movies needed each other, more so the TV division needing the movie division, and this great handshake within the Marvel Cinematic Universe took off.

At least as far as SHIELD was concerned.

Then there were the various reports about how Marvel Television and Marvel Studios were having a snit with each other and weren't exactly cooperating with each other.

But since that bit of information had made it to the web, the man himself from Marvel, Kevin Feige, said that these reports were not true and that both entities of Marvel productions ARE working with each other. The big snag, he's been known to say, about the relationship between the two studios, is production speeds, which is why it's easier for the television landscape to reflect the movies more easily.

But then he goes on to say in other statements that there's no set date for any kind of crossover between film and TV.

Though I'm thinking that if they really wanted to, they can pull it off.

SYFY Announces SHARKNADO 4 Casting

SHARKNADO 4 Casting News

Shartknado casting news, direct from Syfy...

via press release...

Syfy and The Asylum announced today that Ian Ziering will slay again in SHARKNADO 4 (working title), reprising his role as shark-fighting hero Fin Shepard, while Tara Reid is set to return as April Wexler to reveal the outcome of the fan-voted #AprilLives or #AprilDies social campaign. The fourth addition to the hit global franchise also sees the return of David Hasselhoff as Gil Shepard and Ryan Newman as Claudia Shepard.

Set to premiere on Syfy this July, SHARKNADO 4 (WT) will take place five years after the East Coast was ravaged in SHARKNADO 3: OH HELL NO!. Fin, his family and the cosmos have been blissfully sharknado-free in the intervening years, but now sharks – and ‘nados! – are being whipped up in places (and ways) least expected…

SHARKNADO 4 (WT) will also star:

Gary Busey (“Lethal Weapon,” ”Celebrity Apprentice”), as Wilford Wexler, April’s father and a lead scientist at Astro-X. He's at the forefront of advances in the field of robotics.

Tommy Davidson (“Black Dynamite,” “In Living Color”), as Aston Reynolds, playboy tech billionaire. Aston is the CEO of tech company Astro-X, developers of a revolutionary energy system that can stabilize the atmosphere and prevent the formation of tornadoes.

Imani Hakim (“Everybody Hates Chris”), as Gabrielle, Matt’s best friend and a fellow soldier. Gabrielle is tough and no-nonsense, can take care of herself and isn’t afraid to show what she's capable of doing.

Cody Linley (“Hannah Montana,” “Melissa & Joey”), as Matt, Fin and April’s eldest son.  After surviving the first Sharknado, Matt finished flight school and joined the Army. He's experienced the events of the last six years from afar and longs to reunite with his American Hero father.

Who Was Manuel Bracamonte, THE BACHELOR?

At the end of this week's episode of The Bachelor, we saw a tribute that read,

In Loving Memory,
Manuel Bracamonte

Initial research for Manual showed that he was a line producer for the various Bachelor television shows, ranging from Bachelor Pad to 'In Paradise' and a few other reality series from the franchise and a few others.

And under IMDb, if this is the correct Manuel, we see he also helped produced quite a few Playboy products... which explains his expertise on The Bachelor franchise!

Regardless, from what I can tell, he was a well liked individual who passed away suddenly, and his passing has left his family in need, if this is the correct link:

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Harry Potter prequel "history" To Be Set in The United States

Juuust in case you did not know this, there will be a program on Pottermore at 9:00 AM, 3-8-16, touching on “The History of Magic in North America.”

It's a new series of four stories and by all estimates, this new short series will be tied in to Harry Potter sequels, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) accidentally releases a bunch of magical creatures in the U.S., and these stores coming out tomorrow will be filling in some details up to that point in time, prior to 1926.

Just in case you did not hear, Sony is looking to go ahead and revive their plans to kick off a Venom spinoff movie.  In case you did not know, Venom was an alien symbiotic creature that infected Peter Parker, AKA, Spider-Man. The alien became his suit, but the suit became addictive and it slowly took over Parker's mind.

The last time we saw Venom, it was in one of the Sam Raimi movies, and it was a horrible film experience. I swear, a third of that film could have been left on the cutting room floor.

There's a tiny possibility that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be showing up in the next Predator movie from Shane Black.

The cool thing about this is that the Predator film franchise is the only franchise Arnie has not shown up in, in any of the sequels, unlike his other, robotic film home of Terminator.
