ABC Disappoints, Allows Lochte On DWTS (And The Lineup Is...)

DANCING WITH THE STARS season 23 lineup

Despite being a raging attention whore and outright fabricator of misleading information, and being in the middle of being dropped by his major sponsors, it would seem that ABC can see nothing but gold in the ratings for the 23rd season of Dancing With the Stars by allowing Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, the Olympic gas station vandal, on the show.

As it was, the swimmer was already signed up to the show before he went off the deep end (no pun intended) out in Rio. But after his little debacle, there were questions as to whether ABC would let him be on the show or not. But alas, ABC is not stupid and they see a ratings magnet when they have one.

Rating magnets can range from those who dumb things while representing the U.S., to people who are overcoming distinct physical challenges. No, I don't mean the 70-year-olds that can't move to save their life that somehow, magically, manage to survive more elimination rounds than they should!

But this is TV and that's what the majority of viewers like seeing. So we get to watch this guy try to dance.Lochte claims he doesn't dance and this is all new to him, so for those of you who will watch, it should be interesting. That is, if you believe him about that.

Lochte will be going up against these other "Dancing guest stars:"

Ryan Lochte To ABC?; Some Cancellations and Renewals

Does ABC Keep Ryan Locthe on Dancing WIth the Stars?

Prior to that dumb ass Rio debacle that Ryan Locthe propagated, he was apparently lined up to join ABCs Dancing with the Stars. At this point, Locthe has lost four major sponsors since his bone-head move in Rio and time will tell if he is remaining in the lineup of DWTS.

Juuust in case you do not what happened, Locthe and a few teammates were busted for vandalizing a gas station, but fabricated a tale of being mugged.

ABC will announce the DWTS lineup on Good Morning America on Tues, Aug 30th.

Bravo Renewed Below Deck Mediterranean for a second season.

Comet network, a science fiction digital network, just acquired the rights to the original Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes and the Godzilla movies that came out between 1954 and 1975.

HLN has cancelled Dr Drew. The final episode of the show will air on Thursday, Sept. 22nd.

Starz Renewed Survivor’s Remorse for a fourth Season.

The Travel Channel has renewed Xtreme Waterparks and Top Secret Swimming Holes.

GRIMM To Be Cancelled by NBC

Grimm cancelled by NBC
Well, I guess it had to happen sooner or later, but the fun fantasy series, Grimm, starring David Giuntoli, will be airing its final season this upcoming year.

The final (sixth) season on NBC will premiere on January 6th, 2017.

The series premiered back in 2011, so it had a pretty fun run and introduced some great talent to the small screen.

But will this be the end of the show?

Running on pure conjecture, if there are enough viewers of the series, I have to wonder or hope of another network might pick this up? The CW is a good hope, but I think they have their hands full with all the new shows they're pumping up now.

I'm not sure what other networks might pick it up... maybe Syfy?

Either way, the series, on NBC will be coming to a close after this next one. At least they're letting it run the story out to closure and not cutting it off at the knees.

Thought you'd like to see this newest collection of the latest movie trailers for franchises like the Russian film, Guardians; the kids show come to live-action film, Max Steel; Rings, another Ring sequel and for something out of the blue, Morgan. Creepy, creepy, Morgan.

First up, the Russian movie, dubbed in English,

During the Cold War, a secret organization called “Patriot” created a squad of superheroes from citizens that ranged from various Soviet republics. For years, these heroes had to hide who they really are, but when tough times call, they step up when needed.

The caset includes Anton Pampushny, Sanjar Madiev, Sebastian Sisak, Alina Lanina, Stanislav Shirin, Valery Shkirando, Vyacheslav Razbegaev, Alexander Semenov, and Vladimir Butenko.

It's due out in late February, 2017.

Gotta say, it looks interesting because it is a fresh set of heroic or mutant characters that don't have an "X" in front of them or what not.

Upcoming AVENGERS Movie Names, LOST BOYS TV Series, Rio Olympics Ratings

AVENGERS 3 & 4 movie names

When the 3rd and 4th Avengers films were initially announced, they were Infinity War, part 1 and 2. But now Marvel is back tracking and changing the film names.

The third film will be called The Avengers: Infinity War and the fourth film name has yet to be named.

The directors said they wanted the two films to feel different or distinctive.

Face it, we saw what happens to franchises when they have parts one and two and even three to their franchises, and that can't help. So they have veered from that premise. In my opinion.

Fans aren't being told the name of the fourth film because the film titles have managed to have spoilers in them, like Age of Ultron.

The Avengers: Infinity War will land in theaters in May 2018 while the sequel will land in May of 2019.

THE TICK, From Amazon, Review

Review of Amazon's THE TICK

Amazon just recently dropped The Tick, season 1, episode 1 on their streaming service for fans of the franchise to digest. And to be honest, it is close to as glorious as one could expect from this subject matter of The Tick.

Plus this first episode is part of Amazon's Original TV Pilots program, where they slap out a few single episodes of a few contending series and let the fans choose. Whoo boy.

The Tick stars Peter Serafinowicz as Tick,  Griffin Newman as Arthur Everest, Valorie Curry as Arthur's sister, Dot,  Jackie Earle Haley as The Terror and Whoopi Goldberg as herself!

Produced by Amazon and Sony Pictures Television, and created by Ben Edlund, whose resume includes Supernatural, Gotham, Revolution, Angel, Firefly, and Titan AE. He has a pretty decent resume, as he seems to be the nexus between the world of Joss Whedon and Eric Kripke.

The story line of The Tick reads as such:

In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an accountant with zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a super villain. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero.

Does DC or WB Have No Faith In Themselves?

It's bad enough that DC/WB does not trust themselves, but when you start seeing bone headed fans wanting Rotten Tomatoes shut down, (For all the bad reviews of Suicide Squad), that it really looks like DC has a huge uphill battle on their hands when it comes to comic book movies and trying not to look like Marvel while they're doing it.

First, about that noise about Rotten Tomatoes, at the time that I drafted this piece, there was over 15,000 "fans," whose panties were in a bunch about the professional bad reviews that Suicide Squad was getting. So they petitioned for Rotten Tomatoes to be shut down.

That's akin to wanting the telephone system shut down because of telemarketers.  Or that we should shut down email because of spam.

The best part about this entire thing was that these headlines where coming out before the film got released to the public. I mean seriously? How thin skinned can people be? That would be like fans getting in an uproar because the poke-finder was disabled in Pokemon GO recently. Oh, wait... never mind.

Be it as it may, there's still all kinds of attention coming down on DC and WB about their comic book movie products and most of it isn't good.

When Marvel hit the scene, they created their own style and brand of movies, calling it the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (MCU)  Then DC started trying to get their Justice League movie off the ground and it's been having issues from day one.

One of their big problems was that Marvel did it perfectly, introducing individual characters, having extra scenes in the credits to tease future stories, then made their ensemble movie, The Avengers.

DC, of course, did not want to look like they were copying them. So they were forced to figure something else out. It took them quite a while to get it together. When they finally got their plans up and running in the form of Batman v Superman, they took the opportunity to shove the Justice League team members in the movie at various spots. It was kind of like DCs version of the after-credits scenes. But during the film.

But what's gone wrong with Batman v Superman (BvS) or Suicide Squad? As it stands, I believe franchise fans loved them, or at least BvS. But to the outsider looking in, like film critics, maybe not so much.

Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Universe, image via MoviePilot

WB had good films with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight franchise, which set a serious, somber tone for the hero, as it should be. And these films were not going to include any other characters, per Nolan. They were about Batman, not anyone else. And that made sense. Then Nolan went on to co-produce with Zack Snyder on the Man of Steel film, which did fine in it's own rights.

But the difference between Nolan's films and these others, it seems, is that when Nolan put down a story, he developed the story with engaging back-content, while, in comparison, I feel like the latest WB comic movies seem to rush the back story details out there and then try to cram a tone of content into a story.

In BvS, they took the basis of a classic alternate story about BvS, changed it up completely, jammed in Lex Luthor, a new kind of killer Batman, one of Superman's biggest foes, and introduced Wonder Woman and a few others into the heap.

Some of those points alone could have been entire movies but instead they become cram points in a crowded movie.

Despite the trashing by critics, BvS hasn't done too bad on its own, grossing nearly $900M worldwide, but the critics trashing ultimately hurt the domestic box office performance.

Cinemark Is Hosting A Free Movie Day

Kung Fu Panda free movies

In case you had not heard about it, Cinemark is holding a "Community Day" on August 20th, 2016. The great thing about "Community Day" is that Cinemark is hosting free movies that day, from 9AM to 11:30AM. Yes, you need to be a morning person for this.

The free movies are going to be "family movies," from DreamWorks Animation, and they include Kung Fu Panda 3, Home, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Madagascar 3, and Shrek.

Along with these free movies, concessions will be discounted also. Those discounts will account for "$2 small popcorn, $2 16 oz. soft drinks, and all packaged candy varieties for $2 (While supplies last)"

All of this is in support of WE.org, which provides youth empowerment and service learning programs in the USA!

Showtimes and movie selections will show up online at Cinemark.com starting August 15th, but there will be no online purchasing, as the complimentary tickets will only be available at the theater box office only.

Of course, there's the usual, "at participating theaters only" clause.

But hey, there you have it. See the source link below to confirm any questions you might have.

First Movie Trailer for ARRIVAL

First Movie Trailer for ARRIVAL

The first movie trailer for Arrival, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, has landed.  Hmm, no pun intended, but I'll take the credit.

Arrival is directed by Denis Villeneuve, whose resume includes Sicario (2015), Enemy (2013), & Prisoners (2013) and is the man who has been tapped to helm the Blade Runner Sequel.

The story is fairly simple, and not a totally new premise, but alien ships land on Earth and a linguist (Adams) is hired to figure out what they want. Our destruction or our friendship. (I'm thinking, if they can float city-sized ships on their ends, we need to make friends!)

Check out the first movie trailer for Arrival, coming to theaters on 11-11-16.

Suicide Squad's box office take fell 67% from its opening week, as it followed suit on Batman Vs Superman. But the difference for me, being that Suiciide Squad was a real confusing mess, while BvS seemed to make more sense than some said it did.

And considering how it's possible the film won't open in China due to violence issues, well, it's profit margin is looking pretty glum. But then again, the violence in this film isn't too much more over the top than many films out there. The gore is minimal the gun chatter seems on par with this franchise.

Either way, WB/DC has another film issue on their hands.

I have to wonder how many more changes they're going to make before they realize they need to stick to their guns or actually figure out how to get better at what they're trying to do?

The Toho company has not made a new Godzilla film in a long time. Then Gareth Edwards and Legendary got together and put together the new Godzilla, which will, in turn, go head to head with King Kong in a few years. Literally.

And then there's the licensing for all the other monsters that the studio snatched up.

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE (1951), A Classic Reflections Piece

It's been a while since we've put to print one of our Classic Reflections pieces, and this one is from guest writer, Sybil Vasche.

Some consider When Worlds Collide (1951) a "B" movie, but this movie is really not but rather, a fine example of a 1950s sci-fi premium film.

The movies starts out with a handsome pilot, David Randall (Richard Derr) who was hired to fly some photographs from one scientist, Dr Bronson (Hayden Rourke) in South Africa, to another scientist Dr. Hendron (Larry Keating) in America.  The photographs are the proof that a star, named Bellus, is on a collision course with Earth.

Hendron tries to alert the world, via the United Nations, that the world is going to end in about 8 months, but of course no one believes him.   He has the idea of building a space ship to transport as many humans as possible to a  planet named Zyra that is in orbit around Bellus.  But because no one will believe him, he turns to a wealthy businessman named Sidney Stanton to finance the building of a ship.  Stanton wants to pick the few lucky passengers, but Hendron instead convinces him otherwise "you can sit in the front seat with the grownups."  They end up choosing people by lottery.

As time goes by and the ship gets constructed, other nations finally see the light and they too begin construction of space ships.  As the planet Zyra comes closer, all heck breaks loose on the Earth causing all kinds of natural disasters (some stock footage is used and some really good special effects that won the film its only Oscar.)

Fan Suing About SUICIDE SQUAD Cut Scenes - Reality Soon To Kick In

SO there's this "fan" out there who seems to be pissed off that the Joker was not in as much of Suicide Squad as he felt, he was led to believe he would be.

This poor fellow seems to think that just because he saw scenes in the advertising of the movie in clips and trailers, that he was going to see it all and then some, about the Joker and Katana in the movie.

After seeing the film, he asked the movie theater for a refund because the scenes he wanted to see weren't in the movie.

He's called the movie trailers false advertising, since many scenes with the Joker and Katana, never made the screen in theaters.

He says he drove over 300 miles to see all these scenes that never showed up.

He also alludes to this tricky kind of marketing that will entice fans and consumers to buy director cut versions later on when a film comes to the home entertainment market of DVD, Blu-ray and digital platforms.

Poor guy.

My first take is that he's been living under a rock and that possibly, this is the first movie he ever went to see in movie theaters. Respectfully speaking.

SUICIDE SQUAD Review - Mostly Fun But Lacking Connective Glue

Suicide Squad stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jared Leto, Common, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Joel Kinnaman, Karen Fukuhara, and more, in a film directed by David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch, Training Day).

Oh, yes, Ben Affleck as Batman and Bruce Wayne, gets some screen time too.

In case you did not know, this film is about a secret U.S. government group getting a bunch of super human criminals to do their bidding. In order to get them to comply with the government's requests, they've been promised reduced sentences and oh, they have micro explosives injected into their heads. That way, if they go off-script, their handler blows their head off.

It's compelling.

The film starts out in a lengthy expose of introducing the various criminals, one by one, on who they are and how they got caught. Then we watch Amanda Waller (Davis) convince the government to form this team of super criminals with the reasoning that if an evil Superman ever showed up, who would defend the country?  (Personally, I don't think any of these goons, put together, would even slow down Superman, but that's just me.)

Coming out of the first act and picking up the story in the second act, the evil that opposes our team of "good" guys shows itself and takes over the city.

The second act also shows the team come together and begrudgingly learn to work with each other and their handler. Without killing him that is.

Then our team goes into action to kick some ass.

If this film was put together by the same guy who helmed Training Day, End of Watch or Fury, then WB/DC must have been riding a tight kind of shotgun on Ayer. I think I saw hints of his work in there, but this jumbled mess did not feel like something he did.

This film also spotlights the talent or lack thereof of a good film editor.

Netflix's LUKE CAGE Trailer Shows Some Wild Stuff

Netflix's LUKE CAGE Trailer

Netflix and Marvel have released a full-blown trailer for their upcoming series, Luke Cage. And to be honest, it looks pretty bad ass.

"In this Marvel live action series, a street-fighting ex-con battles crime on the streets of New York as the Super Hero, Luke Cage."

Coming to Netflix on September 30th. (Prepare to binge!)

I was never a Luke Cage comic fan, but I am thinking I am definitely a Luke Cage Netflix series fan.

I love how the trailer starts...  but I see worrisome points in the teaser too. The part where it seems people may learn who he might be, which puts friends and family in danger. And he seems to be hard on his wardrobe.

Take a gander and see what you think about the Luke Cage official trailer.
