Breaking News: HBO Cancels 'Luck'

Under pressure from the passing of a third horse while producing the new series Luck, HBO has decided to stop production of the series and announced the cancellation of Luck altogether.

In their announcement they push the premise that the horses were treated better than the normal horse,

"safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures. "

Having hung around race tracks for the better part of my youth, I have to wonder about that statement, but hey, things change and what not through the years.

I know some animal rights activists that will be pleased to see the show being pulled... though I'm wondering if the story could not have been moved off-track and more stock footage used...

Though I have to admit, the photography HBO took of the horses running down the track was wonderfully impressive... it's majestic to see and to be standing track-side when 10 to 12 horses (the usual field size) go thundering by you and you feel for those few moments, the race pass by.

Be it as it may...  HBO has taken the high road... and I'm sure, will now focus on having more sex in True Blood to make up for the loss of this show with some power-packed casting.

Though I have to wonder...  maybe the ratings weren't as hot as they could have been and decided the heat wasn't worth it?

Just wondering out loud!

In a press release today, it's said that,

"It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series Luck. Safety is always of paramount concern. We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures.  While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won't in the future. Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision. We are immensely proud of this series, the writing, the acting, the filmmaking, the celebration of the culture of horses, and everyone involved in its creation.
Added Mann and Milch: "The two of us loved this series, loved the cast, crew and writers.  This has been a tremendous collaboration and one that we plan to continue in the future."
