'Pacific Rim'; Early Box Office Estimates: Best for Guillermo

The weekend is winding down... well, OK, it's effectively over at the time of this post being written.  And after all numbers have been watched and estimated, it looked like Pacific Rim pulled off a third place finish at the box office, being beat out by the sequels Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2.

I get Despicable, it's a family fun flick and families are slowly running out of movie inventory out there.  And this is NOT it's first week.  Way to go!  I presume that Grown Ups 2 took second off of perceived momentum from its first movie, which aired over the weekend on TV.  In fact one network had an Adam Sandler movie on every time I tuned in or cruised by the station.  To be honest, despite the crass presentation, the franchise and Sandler can hit some funny points with his movies.

But so be it, it was somewhat close in numbers for the box office.

1.  Despicable Me 2 - $44.7 million

2.  Grown Ups 2 - $42.5 million

3.  Pacific Rim - $38.3 million

Sandler's Grown Ups 2 gave him his second largest opening weekend, and so far, the largest opening this year for a comedy.

On the bright side, Pacific Rim gave Guillermo del Toro his biggest opening weekend to date.

This $38M box office weekend is a paltry number compared to the estimated $200M movie budget that del Toro spent making Pacific Rim.  But word of fan-boy mouth might give the movie a stronger second weekend than some movies usually see and it doesn't have too big of a drop off.  We'll see (or hope).

Then again, like John Carter, once it gets to the home entertainment world, it could have a strong sales showing.
