New Movies Opening This Week on Friday, April 4, 2014

This week the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues its march on comic book hero dominance with the latest adventures of Captain America (Chris Evans) and The Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).  And in competition with what is bound to be a box office winner, is Jude Law's new movie.

Last Weekend's Box Office Top-10

Speaking of box office, it looks like Russell Crowe has himself another hit with Noah, which raked in over $43M last weekend, beating out Divergent, which pulled in ~$25M.  Not sure if you noticed, but Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sam Worthington had a movie open in theaters last weekend, titled Sabotage. But it did horribly at the box office, pulling in just a tad over $5M.

Ouch.

Muppets Most Wanted (2014):  Weekend: $11.28M, Gross: $33.12M
Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014): Weekend: $9.07M, Gross: $94.48M
God's Not Dead (2014): Weekend: $8.80M, Gross: $21.75M
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014): Weekend: $8.54M, Gross: $24.17M
Sabotage (2014): Weekend: $5.27M, Gross: $5.27M
Need for Speed (2014): Weekend: $4.23M, Gross: $37.64M

Captain America The Winter Soldier promo art

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Rated PG-13 136 min   -   Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller

Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.

Directors: Anthony Russo | Joe Russo | Joss Whedon
Stars:     Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford

If you were a bit non-plussed about the first Cap film, don't worry, things seem to be getting better in how they are creating films to appeal to more than the core audience.  (I'm thinking the Disney influence.) In fact, much better it seems.  Not only are the marketing the crap out this film to the point of my not being able to watch too much TV, they've amped up the story enough to help the movie open overseas to a $75M weekend, last weekend.

It sort of helps that overseas movie prices are a bit crazier than our ticket prices, but still!

Also, meta reviews have the film sitting at a 7/10 average, and 20,000+ IMDb users have scored the film with an 8.2/10.

This sounds like a MUST SEE action film!
