EDGE OF SEVENTEEN Review, A Solid Teen Angst Comedy

EDGE OF SEVENTEEN Movie Review, A Teen Angst Comedy

Edge of Seventeen stars Hailee Steinfeld, Haley Lu Richardson, Blake Jenner, Kyra Sedgwick, Woody Harrelson and is directed (and written) by Kelly Fremon Craig (Post Grad), in her wonderfully insightful directorial debut. I CANNOT wait until her next film, whatever that may be.

Edge of Seventeen is a comedic drama about one tragically depressed teen, Nadine (Steinfeld) who can't seem to get a break in life, starting from when she was a child to now, at the ripe old age of seventeen.

She's tormented by her good looking and successful brother (Jenner), and barely has any friends but one. That is, until her best friend hooks up with her brother. As if she didn't have enough self-image issues.

I wasn't sure what I would think about this film, my wife chose it, but it had Sedgwick and Harrelson in it. it started out and it was one funny moment after another, peppered with solid dramatic filler.

Nadine has these issues that those of us that were the more introverted kids in school could totally relate to, but the drama is made with great, insighful humorous overtones that makes it all better. Sort of.

Though some may consider her annoying and self-centered, but she's really more of a pragmatic, blunt and truthful kid.

It's a delight of a film that takes a refreshing swing at the teen angst genre. While Steinfeld plys the perfect teen in angst, Harrelson plays her perfect foil as one of her sarcasticly truthful and insightful teachers.

This cast puts out some fantastic performances all across the board.

It was surprisingly enjoyable with a smattering of adult words, so beware where you watch this. The ending was so perfect, that I DEMAND a sequel. We need to see where it goes!

The film got a 95% at Rotten Tomatoes and 7.4/10 on IMDb. Both pretty good reflections on the film.
