'The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day' Movie & DVD REVIEW

If you ever saw the 1999 movie, The Boondock Saints, from Troy Duffy, you know there was something special to the movie.  A special kind of visceral fun.  You also came away wanting just a wee bit more!

Now unless you've been hiding under a rock or in some cruel alternate universe, then you probably know that the sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, came out in 2009.

In the the sequel, everyone is back and a girl was added to the boys club, so to speak!  And I got lucky enough to have a review screener in my possession...  yea, yea, I never promised reviewing all brand new DVD releases!

First up...

The Movie Review of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day:

"There are two kinds of people, talkers and doers.  Which one are  you?"  That's pretty much the opening line to the BDS 2.  It's eight years later.  The brothers MacManus (Sean Patrick Flanery & Norman Reedus) have been hiding out in the Irish countryside...  until someone sends a message to them from Boston by murdering a priest and leaving pennies in his eyes.

As it was noted in the movie, the only problem with that plan, is it worked.  The brothers cut their hair, dig up their old gear and head back to Boston.

The Boston cops seem worried about the message and the FBI send their sharpest, smartest agent, in the form of Julie Benz.  She's so smart, she makes smart people feel stupid.

The boys meet Romeo (Collins Jr.) on the boat ride back to Boston... who is one of their biggest fans.

Of course, if you've seen the first movie, you know what's coming up.  Right?  Sure, I'm sure you do.  Some serious gun-toting, lead-flying action.  But there is a twist of sorts in the direction that the story goes, and shows that Troy Duffy just didn't slap together a sequel, but thought it through and brought us something engaging and fresh.

Or, as he put it in one of the extra's on the DVD,

"Boondock fans, this is for you.  I will never forget you. You put food in my mouth and clothes on my back."

That's a pretty cool statement from a filmmaker. How often do you, the movie fan, get credit for putting the clothes on a man's back?  I'm just sayin'.

Everyone returns and we have a few new folks on the franchise roster.  In addition to Flanery and Reedus (The Walking Dead), we have Billy Connolly, Bob Marley, Brian Mahoney, & David Ferry.

Additions to the Boondock film franchise are Clifton Collins Jr., Julie Benz and Judd Nelson!

Clifton Collins Jr. adds a fantastically hilarious edge to the crew.  In one scene, they're at the gun-runner basement and Romeo (Collins Jr.) picks pearl handled guns with the Mexican flag colors.

He asks, "Do these make me look gay?" and our arms dealer replies "You look like you might have seen one up close."  Collins is the tough yet sensitive guy whose a fan of the 'Saints' previous work in Boston.

And this sequel does have some spots that caught me off guard and cracked me up pretty good... it's the timing because it's not a comedic flick, but there are a few precious spots.

Julie Benz makes the law LOOK GOOD!  And her gun slinging is just hot!!!  She comes into this and at first I think she's going to be the replacement for Willem Dafoe's Smecker character.  Again, Duffy leads you to a familiar door but once it's opened, it's a totally different party.

Psst:  Troy Duffy knows how to mix sexy with butt-kicking because she just isn't a pretty face or hot body toting a gun... she definitely uses it!

And it's just plain great to see Judd Nelson in yet another movie to his 50-title resume in IMDb.

DVD Extras

I loved the extras in the DVD.  There were a few deleted scenes, a behind the scenes piece as we watch the film crew doing their thing, with commentary.

Did you know that they didn't have the "old man" (Peter Fonda) cast until a few hours before the shoot with his scene?

There's also a great sit-down chat with Troy Duffy and Billy Connelly... they even touch on that moth in one scene.  That will make sense to those who will see the movie, and perfect sense to those who have already.

And there are actually some great trailers included that are pretty entertaining, believe it or not.  For example, Harry Brown, starring Bruce Wayne's butler, Michael Caine.  He plays an older man who goes all Batman on some young punks in his neighborhood.

Then there was Defendor, with Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games), Elias Koteas (Let Me In) and Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy).  I had forgotten about this flick and I want to see it.  Dang!

Back to BDS 2....

If you were a fan of the first movie, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is just more fun of the same nature and YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED adding this to your DVD or Blu-ray collection.

Go... snag it...  Trust me!
