Movies Opening This Week - Friday, October 18

Below is the list of new movies opening in theaters this Friday, October 18th.  Below there, the collective of trailers for said new movies.

Carrie 2013

Rated R runs at 100 min

carrie 2013 movie poster

A reimagining (code for ran out of ideas!!!) of the classic horror tale about Carrie White, a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

Director: Kimberly Peirce
Stars:    Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde, Portia Doubleday

Thoughts:  Sure, it's another remake, but the trailer looks like they may have done this well enough to not have this new version possibly stand out on its own.  And sometimes, yes, a new coat of paint on an old film can be (rarely) fun. I can't wait to see how much modernization they apply to the story.

Almost 2,000 users have chimed in on the movie, and have given Carrie a 6.9/10.  That seems to be a promising start.

The Fifth Estate

Rated R with a run time of 128 min

The Fifth Estate movie poster

A dramatic thriller based on real events that reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century's most fiercely debated organization.

Director: Bill Condon
Stars:      Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Carice van Houten, Alicia Vikander

Thoughts:  Critics have had time to see the movie and the reviews are coming in, what I would think is called, flat.  Nothing great, nothing bad.  The movie has around 1,500 user rating votes on IMDb and it's scoring a 5.9/10.  Or...  barely above boring.

Escape Plan

Rated R with a run time of 116 min

Escape Plan movie poster

When a structural-security authority finds himself set up and incarcerated in the world's most secret and secure prison, he has to use his skills to escape with help from the inside.

Director: Mikael Håfström
Stars:    Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, 50 Cent, Vincent D'Onofrio

Thoughts: This is a retiree action movie.  With Stallone and Arnie.  I didn't think it would merit much attention once it came out, but the IMDb user rating is surprising me, with over 2,500 votes, this ancient action fest has a 7.5/10 user rating.

But how much action to these guys pull off.  In Liam Neesom movies, you can see he's feeling his age in the action scenes.  Watch closely, you'll catch where he doesn't move as freely as he could/should.  Or they use obvious stand ins for the big action moments.  I'm not knocking it.  I enjoy his films, but someday we'll be seeing the same from these guys in Escape Plan.

12 Years a Slave

Rated R, it runs 133 min

In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.

Director: Steve McQueen
Stars:      Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael K. Williams, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt

Thoughts: Is this finally a lead role for Chiwetel Ejiofor?  That's good, because he brings a fascinating kind of energy to his roles that's hard to describe, but even harder to deny.  With a bonafied name cast, a legend for a director, it might have legs.

It's in limited release this week, but what few users (1,100) saw it, have given it a 7.7/10 on IMDb.

All Is Lost - [Limited]

PG-13; 106 min

After a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face.

Director: J.C. Chandor
Stars:    Robert Redford

Thoughts:  Here we go with a rash of stranded alone movies.

Kill Your Darlings - [Limited]

Rated R; 104 min

A murder in 1944 draws together the great poets of the beat generation: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs.

Director: John Krokidas
Stars:    Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall, Ben Foster
