'Supernatural' Episode "Dog Dean Afternoon" Made Me Laugh

I normally don't cover The CW's Supernatural series because I like to just settle in and watch, without worry of what to write about it.  But last night's episode of Supernatural, titled "Dog Dean Afternoon," was one of those rare gems that proves that the team behind the show still has comedy gold in their box of writing skills.

This was their 6th episode of their 9th season.

When the preview for the episode kicked in, I had noticed a lot of clips from another episode where Sam and Dean were stuck in a cartoon-like reality.  That too was a funny episode, but this one took the cake.

Back to the basics for one episode

The Winchester brothers arrive at the usual scene of a mysterious death, looking to investigate and smite the source.

One thing leads to another, and it seems that a dog was a witness to the entire process.

So Dean decides to take a potion to help communicate with the dog, "The Colonel."

At first he takes the potion and nothing.  But then Sam throws a crumpled piece of paper away and while chatting, Dean grabs the ball of paper from the trash can next to him and puts it back on the table in front of Sam.

Sam looks funny, then tosses the paper ball again.  Dean, repeats.  And we suddenly realize that Dean is fetching and not realizing it.

Then the dog has a voice and starts talking.

Then the antics kick in for a few minutes while Dean yells at a mailman outside the window, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"   And seemingly enjoys the wind in his face as the brothers drive around.  (And keep an eye out for Dean's argument with a pigeon who craps on the car.)

It was a fun episode that took a break from the angry angels theme to have fun and laugh at themselves.  And it worked.

BTW, the voice of the German Shepherd, The Colonel, was portrayed by Will and Grace's Leslie Jordon.
