Syfy Renews and Orders Some Shows And A Spider Movie

Not sure if you've heard the news or not, but Syfy went ahead and renewed Defiance and Dominion for another season. They gave both a 13-episode season order.

Dominion never quite caught my attention but I do enjoy Defiance from time to time.

Syfy also ordered a new scripted series tentatively called Hunters.

The series will be about a group of "hunters" who hunt a group of terrorists who may or may not be aliens.

OK, here we go.

Lately it's been flying sharks. Before that, man-eating piranhas. Today, we have giant, lava-breathing Tarantulas. That's right... tarantulas.

Lavalantula is slated for a 2015 summer airing, and oh, we can't wait! Right?

September 25, 2014 – Syfy today announced a third season for its original series Defiance, giving a 13-episode order to the action packed drama, and a second season for the epic supernatural thriller Dominion, which will also consist of 13 episodes.   Both series are produced by Universal Cable Productions and are slated to return with all-new episodes in 2015.

Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica, Hellcats) will resume his role as executive producer and showrunner of Defiance while Vaun Wilmott (Sons of Anarchy) will continue to fill the same posts for Dominion.

Season to date, Dominion and Defiance are the top two cable programs in the Thursday 8-10pm time period among P25-54s.  With most current Live+7 data, both series are averaging 2.7 million total viewers, 1.2 million viewers 18-49 and 1.4 million viewers 25-54. Drawing an especially engaged social audience, Dominion was the most social drama on Thursdays across all of TV in tweets (15.4K) and tweets per unique (8.0).

Set in the near future, Defiance features an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races.  In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully.  Redefining the transmedia experience, Defiance has distinguished itself with an unprecedented partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds, by creating the first-ever true convergence of television and online gaming.

Based on characters from the hit theatrical film Legion (2010), Dominion is an epic supernatural drama set in a transformed post–apocalyptic future, 25 years after an army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel, waged a war of possession against mankind.  The archangel Michael, turning against his own kind, chose to side with humanity. Rising out of the ashes, are newly fortified cities which protect the human survivors. In Vega (formerly Las Vegas), the largest of these cities, two houses vie for control over the people and the stage is set for political upheaval and a dangerous power shift. Meanwhile, a rebellious young soldier begins a perilous journey as the war escalates between the human race and the angels that are hell-bent on destroying humanity.  Dominion is produced by Universal Cable Productions and Bold Films.

Syfy today announced it is greenlighting a new 13-episode scripted series, Hunters (working title), about an alien terrorist network on Earth, from executive producers Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead, The Terminator Trilogy) and Natalie Chaidez (12 Monkeys, Heroes), who will also be the writer.

Universal Cable Productions will serve as the studio with Valhalla Entertainment as the production company. Hunters is scheduled to premiere on Syfy in 2016.

In Hunters, based on Whitley Strieber’s best-selling novel Alien Hunter, the disappearance of a decorated Philadelphia cop's wife leads him to a secret government unit assembled to hunt a group of ruthless terrorists - shadowy figures that may or may not be from this world.

In making the announcement, Dave Howe, President, Syfy, said: “We were so impressed by the pilot script from this outstanding and accomplished creative team led by Gale Anne Hurd and Natalie Chaidez. This fast-paced and innovative story takes viewers inside a chilling yet all too familiar world. Adding Hunters to new series such as The Expanse, 12 Monkeys, and the miniseries Childhood’s End, provides us with a formidable lineup of diverse, high-end science fiction.”

“As a longtime fan of Whitley's, I am absolutely thrilled to collaborate with everyone at Syfy and UCP, as well as the uber-talented showrunner, Natalie Chaidez, to bring Hunters to life,” said Hurd.

Giant lava breathing tarantulas – Lavalantulas – erupt out of ancient volcanos in the Santa Monica Mountains, raining death and destruction upon Los Angeles, in the new Syfy Original Movie Lavalantula, premiering in Summer 2015.

With the City of Angels on the verge of incineration, only a washed up ‘90s action hero actor, played by Steve Guttenberg (Police Academy, Diner) – joined by Police Academy alumni Leslie Easterbrook (Police Academy) and Michael Winslow (Police Academy: The Series) -- stand in the way of this monstrous swarm of bloodthirsty creatures who burn their victims alive.

Currently in production in Los Angeles, Lavalantula also co-stars Nia Peeples (The Young and the Restless) and Ralph Garman (KROQ/LA DJ).

Lavalantula will be directed by Mike Mendez, who won a Saturn Award for helming Big Ass Spiders.
