PACIFIC RIM UPRISING - Trailer, Synopsis & Thoughts

The Pacific Rim sequel, Uprising, has had its first trailer released and the outline of the film also put out there by Legendary Pictures.

The film is directed by Steven D. DeKnight, whose resume of products I've more or less enjoyed - He's produced Angel, Smallville, Dollhouse, Starz' Spartacus, & Marvel's Daredevil. He wrote quite a few Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes, so I like his work.

But after seeing the trailer, I am a bit worried how it feels like it has a completely different tone than the first one. Sure, DeKnight might be making it want to stand out from the first one. But this music did not feel right. But I am biases. I loved the score from the first film.

Boyega seems to be a very very different character in this film than in Star Wars The Force Awakens. And that feels very promising that he isn't one of those that gives you the same presentation from one film to the next.

Be it as it may, even though most sequels tend to fall short of moviegoers expectations, and rightfully so, (for example, The Kingsman sequel fell flat for me.), I'm not going to hold my breath, but I can hope that if this is anywhere near as fun as the first one, then it will be fine by me!

With that said...

"The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.
John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.”  Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld.  But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war.  As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.
Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left.  Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.
Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s Daredevil, STARZ’s Spartacus) and also stars Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day."

There are other sub-stories peppered within -

-This movie takes place 10 years after events in the first film.
-The two scientists when their own ways after events in the first film, Gottleib stayed with the PPDC while Geiszler went into the private sector.
-Some sectors of the public are now building their own Jaegers.

And a few other details like how the Kaiju have developed or evolved and what not. If you look carefully at the trailer, you'll see it there.

Here's hoping that when the film comes out in March of 2018, it won't be a disappointment! I don't think it will, unless you believe all the self-professed industry experts making wild guesses on what the film will be like.
