STAR TREK DISCOVERY, Netflix Marvel Series Schedule, THE ROCKETEER

CBS's new online "Star Trek" series, titled "Star Trek Discovery," is coming fast, set to premiere in January 2017, this is a sneak peak at the new ship. It kind of looks like a shirt pin from Comic-Con. Just saying.

Oh, and when CBS airs it on it's own streaming channel, it will also premiere on Netflix.

- - -

In some sad news, "Babylon 5's" star, Jerry Doyle, was found dead, at the age of 60.

No foul play was suspected, but this was just too soon. For most anybody!

- - -

In case you are wondering, Netflix announced when they are rolling out the next set of Marvel streaming series.

"Luke Cage" will bow on Sept. 30th.

In 2017 "Iron Fist" and "The Defenders" will premiere. "The Defenders" is a crossover, ensemble seris involving all our heroes from Netflix. So far.

"Jessica Jones" second season will be right on the heels of "Defenders," but in 2018, as will "Daredevil," and it's spinoff series, "The Punisher."

A Monster Movie Trailer, Starring Matt Damon

Oh my. This new period look for Matt Damon feels like a prequel to Jason Bourne movies! Or not. It's a weird look for him, as far as I can tell, since this is the first time I've seen Bourne... I mean Matt Damon in anything other than recent era clothing! Or Jason Bourne with arrows??? Oh god, you people are screwed!

But be it as it may, this new film, "The Great Wall," is being touted as the most expensive Chinese film ever made. Does Damon cost that much??? OK, just fooling. But seriously, if this is done well, this could be a fun film. It will also star Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau.

It is kind of odd, seeing Damon surrounded by a predominantly Chinese cast. I wonder how they'll explain that one away? Considering how some folks have gotten their druthers in a tizzy about casting white people in Chinese roles of late.

Check out the first movie trailer for "The Great Wall," and at least enjoy the fun of it. For now. It's due out in February of 2017.

(Weirdness note: the first trailer link turned private and is now unviewable. This is the latest public version. )

SPLIT From M. Night Shyamalan, A Creepy Trailer

Despite a lull in writer/director M. Night Shyamalan's projects, it looks like his last film, "The Visit," did well enough where someone put up some cash in a new film project of his.

In this case, that new film is called "Split," and it stars James McAvoy as a very deranged individual with a lot of different personalities. Like, A LOT!

Check it out and see what you think! It seems to have potential, that's for sure! And hopefully it does not flounder like “The Happening,” “The Last Airbender,” “After Earth” did when they came crashing out of the gate and cratered.

Yet when he's on, he hits it out of the park!  We'll see.

Check Out This Darth Maul Fan Film!

(image not related to fan film)

I came across a fan film depicting a short period of time in the day of the life of the "Star Wars" character, Darth Maul.

To be honest, it's pretty entertaining. I have provided the preview clip in case you don't want to commit the 15 minutes to watching the short-film itself.

THE MAN FROM UNCLE (2015), A Quick Review

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer in THE MAN FROM UNCLE, a Review

The other day I had the chance to catch "The Man From Uncle, " starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander.

The description of the film reads as follows,

"In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Cavill) and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin (Hammer) participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons."

It's written and directed by Guy Ritchie. ("Sherlock Holmes" films, "RocknRolla")

When I was watching "The Man From UNCLE," I was hard-pressed to stay entertained. The front half of the film was heavily populated with period, artsy music and there was a lot of set up scenes that seem to over-populate the first act.

In some cases, I think this would be appreciated by some, but for those who like the classic, actioner spy movies, it might be considered a bit slow in opening development.

It was for me.

Ladies, I am sorry to say but Jax... I mean Charlie Hunnam is apparently not going to be in the next "Pacific Rim" sequel, tentatively called "Pacific Rim: Mailstrom," being directed by Steven S. DeKnight and Guillermo del Toro producing.

Boy, has this film been on a roller coaster ride.

First there was the wait of if it was going to make enough money at the box office to warrant a sequel. Then after a very long wait, in what seemed like a begrudging time frame from the studio's end, it was green lit. Then it received a release date of mid-2017. Then that release date was pushed by by half a year. THEN it was shelved.

But now, with DeKnight on board directing, the film got its second green light.

But now we're learning that Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy") will not be reprising his role of Raleigh in the upcoming sequel. He has initially cited scheduling conflicts. Even before Hunnam confirmed he would not be in it, del Toro was wishy washy about replying to inquiries about Hunnam's involvement.

Hunnam said they are forced to get on with making the movie and could not wait for his schedule to open up, due to the politics of film making. He called the process "Bass Ackwards."

Do you remember when I bantered on about the Kickstarter page that Joel Hodgson started to get funding for a few new "Mystery Science Theater 3000" episode/movies? And since then, I've passed along a few updates on the campaign and casting. I've been reporting on their return since early 2014.

(MST3K is the original, entertaining riffing series created by Joel Hodgson. After reading though this, check them out on Amazon.)

They were shooting for enough money to shoot a few new MST3K episodes but slipped in bonus episodes in case they got more than they needed for those three new ones.

Well, the project worked. In fact it worked so well that will they will be shooting 14 new episode movies and a holiday special.

But better than that... NETFLIX has picked up the series.

Movie trailers for "Kong: Skull Island," "Fantastic Beasts" were released during the San Diego Comic-Con weekend event.

"Kong Island," starring Tom Hiddleston, is not just a new swing at the King Kong film franchise, but it is part of a larger film world. A film world that will include Kong and Godzilla facing off against each other. And if successful enough, we will start seeing other monsters from Godzilla's world, like Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, and others. With that said, check out "Kong: Skull Island" trailer.

The following movie trailers were released during the San Diego Comic-Con weekend, they include the DC Entertainment films "Wonder Woman," "Justice League," and "Lego Batman!"

"Wonder Woman" looks like a fun action flick that has me thinking we have a female version of Captain America. Heck, it even looks like it starts in the same era as Cap.

The "Justice League" trailer seems to be missing a key character or two, but I'm sure he'll rise from the dead soon enough. Right? Is it me, or does this serious film seem to be trying to angle at some subdued humor here and there? So much for serious dramatic film attempts.

Thought I would throw in some comic-relief fun with this "Lego Batman" movie trailer. It's cute, as always.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, A Quick Review of Season One

I just got done binge watching the first season of DC's "Legends of Tomorrow," that airs on The CW.

The series was spun off from "Arrow" and "The Flash." The outline reads,

After his family was murdered by an immortal named Vandal Savage, time master Rip Hunter recruits a team of heroes and villains from present day in an attempt to prevent Savage from destroying the future. But Rip has additional issues, as he's now wanted by the Time Masters, an organization he was once sworn to serve, who is now out to catch him for his own time transgressions while trying to save his family. The Time Masters is a group dedicated to protect and manipulate the timeline as they see fit.

To add to that, Savage and Hawkgirl and Hawkman are intertwined through time, and though Savage is immortal, he can be killed by only one item in the universe, and it must be wielded by one of the Hawk people. Of course, they've been at this for thousands of years, so it's obvious the Hawk people suck at killing immortal enemies.

The cast includes

Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter,
Victor Garber as Professor Martin Stein / Firestorm,
Franz Drameh as Jefferson Jackson / Firestorm,
(Firestorm is the embodiement of two people)
Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer / Atom,
Caity Lotz as Sara Lance / White Canary,
Ciara Renée as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl,
Falk Hentschel as Carter Hall / Hawkman,
Amy Pemberton as the voice of Gideon: The AI of the Waverider. Rip's ship.
Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory / Heat Wave,
Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart / Captain Cold.

Casper Crump plays Vandal Savage.

To be honest, the premise of the show did not draw me right away. I never heard of this franchise and to be honest, we've seen too many time traveling shows. Right?

Here's some of the latest news out of San Diego Comic-Con:

It has been confirmed that Ghost Rider will be showing up in "Agents of SHIELD." Robbie Reyes (the human alter-ego) will be played by Gabriel Luna.

Along with Ghost Rider we will also start seeing LMDs on the show. Or Life Model Decoys.

I can't wait to see how they pull it off. And how they employ this into the story.

- - -

"Bates Motel" will be ending with their fifth season.

- - -

If you watch "The 100," you might want to prepare for the idea that Lexa will not be returning.

- - -

Marvel has announced that they are bringing back the original "Nova" alter-ego, Richard Rider. Yes!

Now, I would love to see his story evolve in such a degree that he shows up in the MCU! He was one of my favorites.

Then of course, Netflix released a completely useless teaser video for "The Defenders," the ensemble series that will include Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones together.

Then there's the "Luke Cage" preview that Netflix also released on the world at SDCC.

"Luke Cage" will premiere on September 30th.

(Marvel stuff on Amazon)

"Voltron's" second season is coming to Netflix in late 2016. Which is good because they left that first season in some kind of confusing cliff-hanger hanging out there.

DRACULA UNTOLD, An Interesting Take On The Origin

DRACULA UNTOLD movie review

"Dracula Untold" stars Luke Evans as Dracula, Sarah Gadon and Dominic Cooper. The film is directed by Gary Shore. This is also the first installment of Universal's Monsters Cinematic Universe. Yes... you read right. Universal is rebooting all the classic monsters into a franchise.

In this vision of Dracula's origin, we learn of how Vlad The Impaler becomes the vampire known as Dracula. And it is a fascinating insight or new vision of how he came about.

It all starts after Dracula's days of being Vlad the Impaler. He's a kinder, gentler Prince who rules Transylvania.

But an invader comes forth, demanding that Vlad give up 1,000 of his kingdom's children in payment to right some perceived wrong. But Vlad declines in a rather specific fashion that will bring doom and a war to his front door that he cannot win.

He turns to a vampire he knows of in a far off mountain and asks for his help... for his power. The vampire gives Vlad a taste of his blood, giving Vlad the power of a vampire for three days, of which he will then return to being human. Unless he feeds before those three days are up.

In the meantime, he uses his newfound powers to combat the invaders known as the Ottomans. But as you might have guessed, something takes place that causes Vlad to feed on human blood.

And the rest is history, so to speak.

DIVERGENT Movie Series Cancelled, To Be A TV-Movie - OUCH!

Well, this will either be a daring and brilliant move that may set a precedent, or this will be a floundering and embarrassing decision made by Lionsgate.

Lionsgate has cancelled the theatrical release of the final (fourth) "Divergent" film of the series and has decided to make it into a TV movie. After the TV movie, they will probably be creating a spinoff TV series, based off a new set of characters.

It is unknown if Shailene Woodley, Theo James and others from the film series will appear.  Though I am skeptical of that when the announcement includes the catch phrase, 'new set of characters.' But hey, who knows, though I've never really seen actors move from the big to little screen in mid-career too often.

Yes, you heard right. That's how badly the last film performed. And to be honest, I'm surprised they're pushing forward with the TV part of this plan.

Then again, this could also be a byproduct of trying to make a four-film series out of a three-book series.

The entire book series was a fun and engaging read. When the first film came out, it was a great film. But the second film of the series was so so boring because frankly, the film production lost something that the books had. The second film just felt like a total rehash of the first film.

It was so boring that I did not care about the next film. At all. I mean, face it, in my opinion, it was probably going to be more of the same. Right?

Now we'll see how this new plan pans out.

To be honest, to have a film series move to the TV platform and become a spinoff series could be one of those surprise moves that fans will eat up.  If done right.

Any way, there you have it. The "Divergent" film series is moving to the TV side of things.
