Don Wildman Returns for the Fourth Season of 'Mysteries at the Museum'

via press release

Museum explorer and history enthusiast Don Wildman returns as host of the fourth season of the highly-popular weekly Travel Channel series "Mysteries at the Museum."  Premiering Thursday, November 15 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT,  the 13 one-hour episodes feature Wildman as he brings these museums and their artifacts to life through their intriguing back stories.  Viewers will take a fascinating journey to the historical institutions that millions visit as part of their travel itinerary.  Every Thursday night, Wildman will provide an unprecedented peek behind the museum glass.

"Mysteries at the Museum" spans the country, exploring local archives, storefront collections and the hallowed halls of stately institutions, to uncover the objects and artifacts that reveal the nation's hidden secrets.  Wildman scours a range of museums in search of extraordinary relics at the heart of tales that shock and amaze.  From Springfield, Illinois' Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, where a rusted metal chisel was once wielded in a daring plot to steal the remains of the beloved 16th President, to the Connecticut Air and Space Museum, where a replica of a primitive plane may rewrite the history of aviation, these are a few of the sites featured in the series that celebrate America's distinguished past.

"Museums are go-to destinations for travelers," said Andy Singer, General Manager, Travel Channel.  "This is a series that continues to get raves from our viewers.  They love the surprising twists in the way the tales are told, even for the stories they thought they knew.  Don provides a unique glimpse at these revered institutions by unraveling unknown layers of our nation's history.  It's one of the reasons the series' popularity continues to grow."

"What the public sees at any museum or archive is just the tip of the iceberg," added Wildman.  "We're investigating these incredible artifacts by telling the amazing stories most travelers have never heard.  The series has scandals, achievements and unexplained encounters – some of the most enthralling events viewers never knew even happened."

In the premiere episode, Wildman first travels to Boone, Iowa.  There, housed in a display case at the Boone County Historical Center is a seemingly ordinary metal and glass lantern.  But this beacon of light guided a brave teenager through a dark and stormy night on a dramatic life-saving mission.  Then at the Daredevil Museum in Niagara Falls, New York, Wildman examines an elaborately-constructed 12-foot barrel that was built specifically for a death-defying act of tumbling straight over the Falls!  Wildman then heads to South Carolina's Florence Museum, where Civil War regalia and crude surgical instruments are on display.  And within this collection is a gnarled piece of metal linked to a disaster that nearly wiped a town off the map!

"Mysteries at the Museum" is produced by Optomen Productions, Inc. for Travel Channel.  For Optomen, executive producers are Nicola Moody and Dominic Stobart.  Series producer is Tim McConville.  For Travel Channel, executive producer is David E. Gerber.

Tig Notaro and Jason Ritter Open Up On The Next Episode of Sundance Channel's 'The Mortified Sessions'

via press release

"I was a rambunctious kid…If I grew up with a different family I probably would have been medicated." – Jason Ritter

On the upcoming episode of SUNDANCE CHANNEL's hit series THE MORTIFIED SESSIONS (airing Monday, October 29th at 10 PM et/pt), talented comedian Tig Notaro (who became an instant legend to many fellow comedians this past summer as she revealed her cancer diagnosis onstage during a set) and actor Jason Ritter [Parenthood] sit down with host David Nadelberg to share some of their most treasured childhood artifacts and offer insight into the key life-changing moments that have made them who they are today.  Born out of host David Nadelberg's headline-making storytelling project and book series "Mortified," the acclaimed half-hour series dives into the celebrity's memory and often their deepest emotions in a way that is both cathartic and completely relatable.

In her interview Tig discusses her free-spirited mother, who she at times felt she had to raise, and her stepfather who provided a needed structure.  Notaro later opens up about her past year, which has included the diagnosis of breast cancer, which she revealed to the public on-stage at her comedy show; and the impact of the tragic death of her mother.  Referencing the days and weeks that followed the recent and saddening news of her mother's death, Tig reveals: I don't cry very easily, but for three weeks I was only crying.  I went through everything she owned, and she kept everything I ever touched, and I had no idea.

Ritter joins in the second half of the episode and discusses growing up in a home of actor parents (the late John Ritter and Nancy Morgan), and struggling to find his own identity in his teenage years.

On her career-defining decision to reveal her cancer diagnosis to her audience in  during a set:
Before I went to the show I was thinking, how am I going to get into all of this horrendous material – so I thought what if I just went out and was like, hello I have cancer…so that's what I did.  When I was on stage, I remember thinking – I think something cool is happening.  And the audience was with me, they were laughing, they were crying.  I did this show – went to sleep – wake up the next day and I turn on my phone and had ten million [messages].  Rolling Stone wants to talk to you, these book deals are coming in … I was like, 'what in the hell happened while I was sleeping?'  ….  I think it was that I just diagnosed with cancer and I walked on stage and was very real and raw about [stuff].  It was very cathartic.

On her relationship with her mother and stepfather:
My mother was a very free spirited person, what people would consider the 'cool mom'.  …  She always told me, if anybody had a problem with me, to tell them to go to hell.

It was hard as a kid, because there was some structure that I needed, so there was some tension between us.  … She'd need to come home and act like a mother, stop painting things and standing on furniture.  She would tell me that I raised her half the time.

I had a stepfather, and he definitely provided structure. … He was hardcore, he would bring in a bag [into my bedroom] and anything that was out of place he's throw in the bag.  And I'd have to buy my toys back.  He was like a drill sergeant, with zero emotion.

About her mother's unexpected death:
I don't cry very easily, but for three weeks I was only crying.  I went through everything she owned, and she kept everything I ever touched, and I had no idea.

On the life-changing moment that followed her mother's death:
My stepfather had told me in the past, and even in recent years, that my career was a waste of time and a waste my intelligence – and I should have been a doctor or attorney … He said, 'I am sorry that I ever said those things to you, I was wrong – I think that you're doing exactly what you should be doing.'  I couldn't believe what I was hearing, this is somebody that is a robot – and he was sobbing and I was sobbing.  And I was just thinking, my mother would have killed to have heard this.

Jason on being an energetic kid, growing up with actor parents John Ritter and Nancy Morgan:

I was a rambunctious kid, I guess, I was probably annoying to some of my teachers.  If I grew up with a different family … I probably would have been medicated.

On later becoming apathetic in his teenage years:
It just seemed like if you cared about something you weren't cool.  It was the 90s.

I got so bored with being apathetic, I found this loophole where I could use my energy and not have to squelch everything down if I went the 'I'm the crazy guy' route.  I would dance like a psycho; I was also going through a whole thing of trying to figure out who I was.

Jason on having a teenage identity crisis, and struggling to find his own path:
I remember of having a little realization and almost an identity crisis – I all of a sudden realized that I would laugh like whichever friend I was with at the time. It really freaked me out. I felt I kept on disappearing in whatever person I was with, instead of trying to figure out who I am by myself.

The Zombie Rage Has Now Claimed Cats!

Zombies have gone to a brand new level of terror... cute terror...

via press release

Zombie Cat: The Tale of a Decomposing Kitty

It's a story of self-control, friendship, and most importantly, the zombie apocalypse. What's not to love?
…the kind of coffee table book that I'd want around when I had company over.
A perfect novelty gift for pop culture loving cat owners.
Atherton and Straker compliment each other splendidly.
Tiddles is a suave, carefree kitty cat whose only pleasures in life are eating mice, wooing the ladies, and being generally apathetic toward his owner, Jake. But when a toxic spill occurs outside of town, Tiddles finds himself savagely attacked by a nasty-looking radioactive field mouse, and he wakes up as one of the undead. However, he still retains a bit of compassion and refrains—for now—from zombie Bacchanalian delights, such as eating living beings' brains! Umm . . . any brains at all!

However, Tiddles, a.k.a. Zombie Cat, is decomposing rapidly and would prefer to live a normal life in the zombie apocalypse with his owner, Jake. But will Jake take in his former cuddly pet or will ZC be doomed to roam the streets trying to avoid the inevitable pull of his undead yearnings? Zombie Cat is a humorous adult picture book in the vein of Pat the Zombie and Ten Little Zombies: A Love Story. Isabel Atherton's quirky storytelling combined with Bethany Straker's captivating (and slightly grotesque!) illustrations make this the perfect addition to any Halloween collection. It's the ideal gift for any crazed zombie fanatic—or equally crazed cat lover. 14 color illustrations

Isabel Atherton is an author, a literary agent, and director of Creative Authors Ltd. When she is not helping her authors she likes to write illustrated books herself. She is the author of Zombie Cat, an illustrated adult humor book, and Smelly Ghost, a children's picture book due out in fall 2013.

Bethany Straker is an illustrator and designer. She has illustrated for various magazines including Bliss and Disney Girl at Panini Comics, GoGo's Crazy Bones at Titan Publishing, Running Fitness, and Runner's World. Zombie Cat is her first book! If you missed the episode of Katie with Rod Stewart, here's an excerpt of their conversation

via press release

On the Tuesday, October 23rd edition of the nationally-syndicated talk show, KATIE, (check local listings, Katie Couric interviewed legendary rocker and father of eight, Rod Stewart. His new memoir, Rod: The Autobiography, covers five decades of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, and he sits down with Katie for his first U.S. television interview about his new tell-all. Stewart also opened up about the one who broke his heart: Rachel Hunter. Rod said, "She was only 21 and I think I was 45 so she hadn't spread her wings, she hadn't grown, she hadn't lived. She needed to do that. She felt being married to me was just following me in my footsteps…in the shadow of Rod all the time."

KC: Fact or fiction? Rod once needed to get his stomach pumped after an encounter with sailors at a gay bar in San Diego.

Audience Member: Fact!

RS: Thank you, darling, thank you.  Just winding me up aren't you?  This is actually what happened.  I used to have this guy work for me, he was a gay publicist.  He's dead now so he might be watching.  I had to fire him because he did something terrible, which I won't go into.  So, he wanted revenge so he started this rumor about me, and it was horrible because my kids were at school.  So that is definitely not true.

KC: But it just kept going on and on and it became accepted, right?

RS: No, it was never accepted.  I'm as heterosexual as they come.

KC: Okay, alright.  Fact or fiction? Rod was blacklisted and banned from all Holiday Inns for one too many trashed rooms.

Audience: Fiction.

Rod: Fact!

KC: Your band was the first ever to receive this honor, I understand.  Is that true?

RS: In the old days it was like The Who and The Faces were known for smashing up hotel rooms, and it was silly I know.  We did it because we were being ignored by the hotel staff because we weren't famous in those days.  So they would treat us like real dirt.  So what happened, we actually then started checking in as Fleetwood Mac.

KC: [laughs]You did?

RS: Because Fleetwood Mac weren't heard of either.  We were all unheard of, so we were Fleetwood Mac for a little while.

KC: That's funny.  Alright. Fact or fiction? Rod was such a stand-out in Mr. Wainwright's music room in school, he would volunteer to sing solos in front of the class.

Audience: Fact.

RS: Fiction!

KC: In fact, you hated to sing when you were a little boy.

RS: Yeah, I was probably eight or nine, maybe a little bit older.  So I met this guy and he was a real bully and he knew I didn't like singing.  And he would pull me up in front of the class and I would have to sing.  So I thought, how am I going to get out of this, this is really vile.

KC: I know, I read about this, it is vile.

RS: Should I go into this?

KC: Yeah, go ahead.

RS: So what I used to do – you know when your kids are sick at school and they get sent home.  So what I used to do is make a little bowl of sick.

KC: He actually would make fake vomit with mashed potatoes from his lunch, carrots, and a little meat.  He would mush it up with water.

RS: Spit in it, stir it up and then throw it out the playground.  And my mate would go, 'Please sir, Stewart's been sick.'  And then he would come over and go, 'Poor boy, take him home.'

KC: And that all to get out of music class?

RS: All to get out of music class.  Isn't it funny how it's turned out?

= = =

KC: So we wanted to start by saying, Rod Stewart, this is your life.

RS: Who? Ah.

KC: Yeah, Rod's life in pictures. By the way Rod…not many brunettes in the bunch…

RS: All blondes.

KC: Do you have a type?

RS: No just the 2, there's Kelly Lebrock and Joanna Lumley.

KC: Yeah, is it funny when you look at this, what comes to mind?

RS: Well I tell you what, I feel worn out already.  God.

KC: No wonder, right?

RS: I do, I feel worn—no, go on.

KC: Have you always been a dog?

RS: A dog?!

KC: No, I mean you have bedded a lot of women in your day.

RS: No, no, no this is another. Let me get this straight. That is not thousands of women, is it? Like Bill Wyman who said he's at like two thousand. I'll be lucky if I've had probably 50.

KC: Really?

RS: Yeah! I was never a "shagger arounder." Is this is a daytime television show?

KC: That's okay, that's okay.

= = =

KC: Now ironically, Rachel Hunter is the one who ended up breaking your heart.

RS: Yeah.

KC: You all were married for eight years, is that right?

RS: Eight years, yeah. Seven or eight years.

KC: And then, she left you.

RS: Yeah.

KC: Did you feel as if maybe you were getting your comeuppance at that point?  Or what was it like to have your heart broken?

RS: Well it did, yeah. It did feel like karma at the time, I must admit cause my track record was terrible with women, but you know, at the time my sister said to me that she thought Rachel was far too young to get married. She was only 21 and I think I was 45. She hadn't spread her wings, she hadn't grown, she hadn't lived. She needed to do that. She felt being married to me was just following me in my footsteps. In the shadow of Rod all the time. So you know, it's one of those things, it's life and we all moved on.

= = =

KC:  You have some very, very passionate fans so we decided to put one of them to the test to see just how well they know your songs.  So we have someone, Jackie from Phoenix is here and she's come… Jackie come on up! Come on up! Jackie, alright come on up here Jackie.

Rod: Come Jackie, hi darling.

Jackie: Oh my god!

KC: Alright, Jackie come stand next to—okay.

RS: Jackie, sit down. I'll sit here?

KC: No you sit here Rod. Jackie you stand next to Rod.

Jackie: I don't think I can stand, I don't think my legs –

KC: you want to spend eternity with Rod Stewart, explain, explain that because this actually serious, slash scary. Go ahead.

Jackie: Well I won't be alive so you won't have anything to worry about. I've asked that my ashes be spread over one of your estates. You can pick which one. Yeah, you can pick which estate, I just figured that was as close as I would ever get to you

RS: Well you are a lot closer now.

J: Oh my gosh, I cannot believe this.  I am freaking out.

KC: Well, you are doing really well.  We're going to play a little game.

RS: I feel terrible, you should sit down (gestures to Jackie).

Jackie: I should sit down.

KC: Alright, here Rod, this is your mike.  You hold on to that one Jackie.  We're going to play a little game.  This is how it's going to work.

Jackie: I can't remember my name right now, let alone…

KC: Rod is going to sing a few bars of some of his biggest hits, and when he stops singing, you need to continue and sing the lyrics of the song he's singing.  Does that sound good?

RS: Or you can go home now.

KC: If Jackie gets all these songs right, everybody gets to go home with a copy of Rod's autobiography.  So no pressure, no pressure!  And, if she doesn't get the songs right, there is a Barnes and Noble right around the corner.

KC: Alright Rod, let's start with "Young Turks"

RS (sings): "Billy left his home with a dollar in his pocket and a head full of dreams.
He said somehow, some way."

Jackie: Is it My turn? "it's gotta get better than this."

KC: Keep going!

Jackie: "Patti packed her bags, left a note for her momma, she was just seventeen,
There were tears in her eyes when she kissed her little sister goodbye."

If you're a Travel Channel fan and you did find yourself hooked on the first season of Baggage Battles (Does that not sound like the battle of divorced people???), then check out the news below!

via press release

CHEVY CHASE, MD (October 23, 2012) – The Travel Channel's auction specialists are back for more baggage, more bidding and more battling in the second season of "Baggage Battles"…but this time the unclaimed baggage is even bigger and stakes are even higher!  Premiering on Wednesday, November 14 at 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. ET/PT, the 14 half-hour episodes will feature more than unclaimed property from luggage, freight containers and cargo palates as automobiles and estate items also make it to the auction block.  The new season will continue to follow these shrewd experts as they trust their keen eye for detail to find hidden treasures at the top auctions around the world including airport auctions, unclaimed freight and shipping auctions, police and seizure auctions, vehicular auctions and estate auctions.

"Baggage Battles" provides a glimpse into the very profitable business of bidding, buying and reselling unclaimed property by following three teams of auction experts who travel to some of the most important auctions, where their bids are based on sight-unseen instincts.  Season two of "Baggage Battles" brings back the savvy auction experts viewers met in the first season:  Laurence and Sally Martin, a married couple who co-own Studio Antiques in El Segundo, California; Mark Meyer, a young entrepreneur in the auctioning business from Long Island, New York; and New York City's Billy Leroy, owner of the iconic Billy's Antiques and Props, one of the last eclectic props and antique stores.

"We've peeled back the curtain on this virtually unknown phenomenon of airport auctions.  Now, this new season, we'll be showing audiences where the 'big' stuff gets auctioned off and how our team of experts navigate through unclaimed property auctions that feature items that don't necessarily fit in a suitcase," said Andy Singer, General Manager, Travel Channel.

In the premiere episode (airing at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT), the auction experts are in Brooklyn, New York.  Every year, the U.S. imports nearly $2 trillion worth of goods, which is more than any other nation in the world.  Ninety-five percent of those goods come by ship.  With 65 miles of coastline, Brooklyn is one of the busiest shipping ports in the country.  When incoming freight goes unclaimed, it is sold at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Auction.

The Martins travel to Leroy and Meyer's backyard of New York to compete for this valuable international freight.  Items up for auction include a solar panel from a water heating system, a mystery sculpture and a solidly-built wooden crate with undisclosed contents.  With bids ranging from $200 to $1700, the auction experts are out to out-bid each other and win the highly-desirable goods.

In the second premiere episode (airing at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT), the auction experts travel to Boston, Massachusetts.  The city of Boston is rich in American history with notable events including Paul Revere's legendary midnight ride and the Boston Tea Party.  In this episode, White's Auctions is putting a variety of items from Boston's colorful and patriotic past up on the auction block.  However, not everything sold at this auction is authentic, and bidders may be taking home some nice, yet cheap replicas.

The Martins, Leroy and Meyer are out to test their experience and luck by gambling on these genuine – and not so genuine – historical items at the Boston Estates Auction.  The bidding gets underway, and the first big item on the auction block is a document announcing George Washington's death.  Other items up for bids include a musket, a uniquely-crafted saw and documents from the 1700's.  After the auction experts win their respective bids, they take their historical items for examination and appraisal.  And one of the auction specialists goes home with over $4500 in profit!

Filmmaker and surfer Ivan takes Bourdain to lunch at Wendy's, for fried fish, fried sweet potatoes, avocado, yaniqueques and crunchy tortillas served as a light snack. Later, Bourdain meets Ivan and long-time friend and cameraman Jerry Risius at Lechonera el Monumento, a restaurant built next to the monument that marks the spot where dictator Rafael Trujillo was assassinated. Over roast pig, Ivan explains that for many Dominicans abroad, the dream is to make enough money to return home and live a simple life.  The next day, Bourdain and Risius drive ATVs to reach the cliff-side restaurant El Cabito, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Over a salad of fresh conch and cuttlefish, grilled shrimp and beer, Bourdain and Risius reminisce about their days working together in the past.

SEASON FINALE: Tuesday, October 30 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT

A massive fuel spill in a hangar puts fire rescue and hazmat teams on high alert as they attempt to stem the highly explosive fuel from draining into tunnels underneath the airport, which could combust if the fuel is not contained quickly. Meanwhile, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) keep close watch for illegal contraband arriving from Cuba, like cigars and rum, as well as fruits and vegetables that can bring pests, diseases and infestation to U.S. crops.  CBP uncovers a large amount of concealed pills while performing inspections on the ramp. The CBP officer follows the bag inside to identify and question the bag's owner.  Then, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) rushes to a massive explosion at the fuel farm.  The blaze escalates to a full-blown towering inferno because the exposed fuel lines are feeding the fire. MDFR foam trucks struggle to keep up with the blaze, but are unable to get it under control.   When the emergency shut-off valve fails, there is one last resort – someone ventures into the blaze, finds the valves to the fuel lines and manually shut them off.  This is extremely dangerous, but the Fuel Farm Manager takes this chance.  With adrenaline coursing through his body, he risks his own life to save the airport from devastation!

Series Synopsis:  "Airport 24/7: Miami" is an all-access pass inside the intense and dramatic world of Miami International Airport, told through larger-than-life characters whose jobs it is to keep one of America's largest airports running around the clock. REMINDER: Travel Channel's "Dangerous Grounds" premieres November 5

When it comes to coffee, some call me a coffee zombie as I lurched through the halls of work, arms outstretched, cup at the end of one of them, as I mutter caffeeeeeiiiiiine in a low tone, as I shuffle to that coffee pot.  It's ugly and everyone gets out of my way until I start ingesting and the shaking stops.  (That, & I stop looking at people with that hungry look on my face.)  People keep asking me if I've seen The Walking Dead.  I keep asking if that's a show about people before their morning cup of coffee.

How far would you go to get a good cup of coffee?  In Travel Channel's new original series, "Dangerous Grounds," premiering on Monday, November 5 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (moves to regular time slot at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT beginning Tuesday, November 13), coffee magnate and adventurer Todd Carmichael traverses the globe, zip-lines on a makeshift cable thousands of feet in the air, and dodges machine gun-toting adversaries all on the hunt for rare strains of coffee beans in some of the most fascinating and unseen places in the world.

Why?  With nearly a billion people drinking coffee every day, coffee has become the second most-traded commodity behind oil; and most importantly to Carmichael, his livelihood depends on the success of finding the perfect hidden coffee bean.  Buying directly from the growers means Carmichael must encounter danger and opposition from entrenched middlemen.  There's an amazing story behind every cup!

David S. Goyer Unveils Starz Original Series 'Da Vinci's Demons' At New York Comic Con

via press release

NEW YORK– October 13, 2012 – The creator and cast of "Da Vinci's Demons," the highly-anticipated STARZ Original series premiering Spring 2013, came together for the first time today at New York Comic Con.

Creator David S. Goyer and cast members Tom Riley, Laura Haddock and Lara Pulver took the stage in front of a packed house at the Javits Center to take part in a panel discussion moderated by Entertainment Weekly's Geoff Boucher. Attendees were treated to a sneak peek of the drama series, as well as a glimpse behind the scenes courtesy of the cast and creator.

During the panel, creator David S. Goyer introduced the series to a roaring crowd calling his Da Vinci a "Tony Stark prototype," to which Tom Riley-- who portrays the titular character-- agreed, "Mixed with a bit of Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones." They spoke about the research into the life of Da Vinci, the gaps and the creative ways the series imagines them filled, and the ladies detailed their love of the costumes, with Laura declaring that Emmy® Award winning costume designer Annie Symons "takes a box, jumps out of it, then runs a mile." The panel ended with a second viewing of the trailer, which only contributed to the fans growing intrigue.

"Da Vinci's Demons," written by David S. Goyer (co-writer of blockbuster and critically-acclaimed films Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and writer of the upcoming Man of Steel), is a historical fantasy, following the 'untold' story of the world's greatest genius during his turbulent youth in Renaissance Florence.  Brilliant and passionate, the 25-year-old da Vinci is an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist.  As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time.  He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.

"Da Vinci's Demons" stars Tom Riley ("Monroe," I Want Candy) as a young Leonardo da Vinci, Laura Haddock (The Inbetweeners Movie, "Honest," Captain America: The First Avenger) as Lucrezia Donati, the mistress of Lorenzo Medici and lover of Leonardo da Vinci and Lara Pulver ("True Blood," "Sherlock," "Robin Hood") as Clarice Orsini, head of the Medici Bank and de facto ruler of Florence.

"Da Vinci's Demons" is the first project to enter production under the multi-year agreement between Starz and BBC Worldwide Productions.  Goyer is showrunner.  Julie Gardner is Executive Producer, along with BBC Worldwide Productions' Head Jane Tranter.  Production began in Wales in summer 2012 and wraps in the fall. STARZ will premiere the eight-episode series in the U.S. in 2013.  BBC Worldwide will distribute the series in international territories.
