The CW's 'Cult'... will it last? (A CW Observation/Editorial)

The CW's new series Cult, may have bad timing.  A piece over on Media Life Magazine took a quick peek at Cult and they made a few points about the show:

It's about a group of folks mimicking murders from a TV show they watch.  It's dark and has dark promise.  But...

There's already one "cult" show out there and its kicking butt, called The Following!  Its lead-in program is Hart of Dixie, which is not the correct demographic for the show.  It's up against NCIS: LA and White Collar in the same day/time slot.  (Should that matter in this day and age of the VoD?  Apparently enough so for it to be a concern.)

The concern being that this kind of series won't attract the younger viewers like many of its other shows do and this has advertisers worried.

The article also suggests it should have a better, possibly darker lead in show, like Nikita on Friday nights.  Which seems to make sense.


But does the CW know what its doing or are they lobbing a pipe bomb in the pond in hopes of getting some fish?  The series premieres tonight (Feb 19th) and stars Matt Davis, Jessica Lucas and a favorite actor of mine, Robert Knepper.

You might remember Matt Davis as Alaric from The Vampire Diaries, and Damages.  Jessica Lucas from Melrose Place and Friends with Benefits. She can also be seen in the upcoming remake of Evil Dead. Knepper has been in SGU Stargate Universe, Heroes and I first took note of him in Fox's Prison Break.

As far as a grab at something, I think the CW may know what they're doing.  Or are at least expecting a particular outcome.  For one, the marketing is taking advantage of who created Cult, that being Rockne S. O'Bannon, who heralded such popular genre series such as Farscape and V.

But doom is being suggested or predicted by other media outlets.  Time and time again, I've seen TV ratings reports that spin the numbers that the network gets as "dismal" numbers from The CW.  And it seems like it's all doom and gloom for the network.  But then again, that's a different type of spin/marketing by the reporting sources, as they hope to generate interest/shock so you go check out their report.

But I continually keep something in mind about this network:

A few years back I caught a piece where the execs from the network indicated they knew they had low-rated fare and were more-or-less fine with it.  Their expectations weren't that dismal and knew that they would need to build an audience over time.

Case in point could be how many years has Supernatural been on the "renewal bubble," only to get renewed.  (This year they had an early renewal notice!)  And that's a decent show with a pretty hard core set of fans.  And it seems that the network is loyal to their fans, as long as they can stay afloat with the advertisers, costs and what not for a show.

Case in point, again, is Supernatural.  It came on the scene like gang busters but had some financial troubles after the first few seasons.  Then they scaled back on the grandiose technique of how they filmed going to a single camera method.  They scaled back the writing.  They also scaled back the licensed classic rock tunes to save cash, and other little things.  But the CW kept it on the air and now that gamble, and dedication to the fan base, has paid off as the show heads into its ninth season next year.

And they've continued to build up new franchise brands with a certain amount of patience that other networks either don't have or can't afford as they all compete with CBS.

This season, The CW has The Carrie Diaries, The Vampire Diaries (so not related to the Carrie thing), Hart of Dixie, Arrow, Beauty and the Beast, Supernatural, 90210 (which somehow manages to hang around), Nikita and a few others.  And some of these shows are starting to bring in TV rating records for the network, as they break their own records set by previous other series.

So as shows grow and advertisers are taking note, they can start attracting other creative talent to generate bigger and better shows.  (You need the advertisers to have the money or they can't make what they make.  For some, this is considered the necessary evil.)


Now whether Cult lasts or not is an interesting inquiry.  I'm not sure it will.  It's time slot is a nasty one.  It has a poor lead in show (for the right demographic), it's not alone in the Cult focus thing and so forth and what not.

But it done right, it could hit it off.  It just needs time for that slow burn affect to kick in, like some of The CW's other shows.


Did you know that The CW is the younger sibling to CBS?  It's a jointly owned network between CBS, the now defunct UPN and Time Warner.  CW comes from CBS and Warner Bros..)  Warner Bros. is the parent company of Time Warner.  The network landed with a splash in its opening with America's Next Top Model, and it went from there.

News: Kyle Chandler, 'Hannibal,' 'The Killing,' 'Star Wars,' Jason Momoa...

In a sad piece of news, Mindy McCready passed away, apparently of her own hand, leaving her two children behind.  What a shame.  Ad to top if all off, she allegedly killed her own dog first.  That pisses me off.  Sorry, but sometimes animals become victims of humans and they don't deserve it.


TV Bits:

If you're a Kyle Chandler Fan, he's landed a role on the Showtime cable channel production of The Vatican.  Chandler will portray Cardinal Thomas Duffy.


If you've been tracking the new upcoming NBC series titled Hannibal, the news on the street is that it will be premiering on NBC on Thursday, April 4th at 10pm.  But there's worry out there that most shows that premiere in that time slot for NBC seem to have issues, as in ratings issues.  We'll see how that goes.


The new season of The Killing on AMC has landed Peter Sarsgaard and Amy Seimetz.  Despite the crap with the first two seasons of this show, AMC has a chance to fix their image with this third season. And to be honest the first season was pretty good, so they are capable.


Movie Bits:

Everyone has articles titled with question, 'Will Han Solo Return to Star Wars, Episode VII?'  We know there's a Han Solo movie coming...  and it wouldn't be a huge stretch to include the character in VII.

Right now this "news" is a scoop/rumor.  Much like the next obvious conjecture is, will Harrison Ford be making any kind of cameo?  Again, a great question.


Remake Alert!

Looks like MGM is casting their eye on remaking the 1950s hit movie, The Incredible Shrinking Man.  Universal reportedly was looking at a comedic remake/spin but MGM nabbed the rights from them and save us, as it's being reported that they are now looking to make a serious take on the movie.  Good.


Have you heard that Jason Momoa landed the part of Drax the Destroyer in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie from Marvel?  Awesome news for Momoa fans.  And he just had a movie out in theaters, starring with Sylvester Stallone, Bullet to the Head.


Also, Hugh Laurie fans might be interested in knowing that he's rumored for a part in the Disney movie, Tomorrowland.  A supposed UFO conspiracy movie.


It sounds like GoT's Peter Dinklage is going to be in X-Men:Days of Future Past.  I haven't caught the details of what character yet, but in time, we'll hear about it.

TV Shows on DVD This Week (Weeds, Gossip Girl)

If you're a fan of TV OR not a fan of cable bills and buy your TV series when they come to DVD, well, you might like to know that a few shows came out this week.

Season eight of Weeds, starring Mary-Louise Parker is out, and this release is its last season.

Another final season release, Gossip Girl, season six, with Blake Lively and Leighton Meester.  There's also a package called Gossip Girl: The Complete Series.

Season four of Nurse Jackie, starring Edie Falco hit the stands.

Umm, it took long enough I guess, but the third season of The Hardy Boys is out this week.  I'm not sure I need that kind of flashback.  Do you?

Movies Opening Thursday, Valentine's Day [Die Hard, Save Haven]

This week all the new movies coming to theaters are opening on Thursday, February 14th, or Valentine's Day.

Oh what a perfect combination of a holiday celebrating love and a great love story in A Good Day to Die Hard.  Eh?  What?

OK, maybe Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney playing father & son and blowing things up in Russia might not be the best example of a Valentine's Day movie.

Other cast includes Sebastian Koch, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, & Cole Hauser.


Fine, then maybe Safe Haven could be a good relationship movie?

This Drama/Mystery/Romance/Thriller movie stars the beautiful Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel... in a story where "A young woman with a mysterious past lands in Southport, North Carolina where her bond with a widower forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her."

Hmm.  Well, it will be good to see those two in what could promise to be a decent movie.  (Who here remembers her from her Dancing With the Stars days, where she would wear the skimpiest of skimpy dance attire?)


There's always Beautiful Creatures, with Alden Ehrenreich, and Alice Englert.  Here, "Ethan (Ehrenreich) longs to escape his small Southern town. He meets a mysterious new girl, Lena (Englert). Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town."

Well, the movie is categorized as a "Drama  / Fantasy  / Romance" flick.


Escape from Planet Earth

This animated feature opens in theaters on Friday and is at least a family friendly movie.  The voice cast includes Brendan Fraser as Scorch and other voice talent includes Rob Corddry, Jessica Alba, Sofía Vergara, & Sarah Jessica Parker.


Movies that might fill the bill of Valentine's Day, that are out.  To be honest, that's a tough call, so I'll just spit out what's still in theaters...

I'm not really one to complain, but I can't help but notice the plethora of vengeance in the collective of movies we have out or coming out.

But there's still something that might qualify.  Sort of.  I recall some folks complaining on this site's parent site, Brusimm, about when Christmas rolled around, there weren't very many holiday spirit movies to take the family to.  It's starting to look a little of the same here, this week!

The CW Renews 'Arrow' And Other Favorites; A 'Breaking Bad' Actor Lands New Role + More

'Arrow,' 'Supernatural,' and 'Vampire Diaries' Renewed for Next Year!

Awesome news for fans of the shows if you ask me. The CW announced today that they are renewing these shows for next year, and it would seem they were a shoe in!

Arrow brought the CW their best premiering series since 2009.

The Vampire Diaries is the network's best rated series in specific target demographics.

Supernatural is hitting it out of the park and the ratings are 15% better than last year.

That means that Arrow will be returning for a second season, while Vampire Diaries will have a fifth season.  Supernatural is steamrolling in on its ninth season next year.

But on top of the great TV ratings these shows are pulling in for CBS's The CW, they're also highlighting good numbers "digitally."  That would include the social media world, DVR, streaming... etc..

There's no word yet on Nikita or Hart of Dixie, Beauty and the Beast, The Carrie Diaries and other such series.

Plus the network has Cult coming up!


Arrow stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, and also has Katie Cassidy, Willa Holland, and John Barrowman (as a bad guy!) in the cast.  The Green Arrow character is based on the DC comic.

The Vampire Diaries stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder and Steven R. McQueen.  It's a vampire love-triangle with lots of other complications of sub-plots.

Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as brothers who hunt down supernatural troubles, referred to as "Hunters."


NCIS: LA Spin-Off News

I caught a piece on Huff Post Entertainment that says the word on the street is that Kim Raver (Grey's Anatomy, Revolution, 24) has joined the NCIS: LA spin-off series, which some are referring to as NCIS: Red.

Kim Raver is now joining Scott Grimes (American Dad, ER), John Corbett (Parenthood, Sex and the City 2), Edwin Hodge (Cougar Town, Red Dawn) and veteran actor Miguel Ferrer (NCIS: LA, The Courier).

It's good to see Raver getting a new gig.  She's always brought something unique to all the roles I've seen her in.  Her characters are easy to like, yet they always seem to have some flaw that's very easy to dislike.


The Originals News

The CW has hired actress Danielle Campbell (Prison Break, Madea's Witness Protection) for the potential new spin-off from The Vampire Diaries, called The Originals.

The Originals will focus on Klaus, and takes place around the New Orleans region.


Jonathan Banks, who played the hired thug, Mike, in Breaking Bad last year has a new gig coming up on NBC.

That new gig is a pilot episode for a potential new show titled Bloodline.  In Bloodline, Banks will be playing the head of a dysfunctional family, if you can call a bloodline with a history of mercenaries dysfunctional.  I know I can!

There's another family also involved in the story, whose bloodlines involve murderers.

It's like the McCoys and Hatfields... but... meaner!

This Week's TV News, Do No Harm, Being Human, and Survivor

The premiere of Do No Harm set some dismal records...  as the worst premiere in television history.  And as usual, 2nd episodes of new TV shows historically have even fewer viewers.  And apparently so did Do No Harm, and thus, not wishing to harm their viewers NBC canceled the series.

It's a shame too, because ensuing dialog between split personalities can be pretty entertaining.  But I guess the premise of someone having a good and dark side, in this fashion, didn't appeal to folks.

To be honest, if the character was a good guy for 12 hours of the day, and sort of evil for the other 12, I was personally wondering when he'd sleep.

But that's just my quirky approach to things.  I seriously don't think we'll even see... wait... NBC owns Syfy...  hmm, if they have so many episodes already in the can, maybe they could air what they have left over on Syfy.  Could it hurt Syfy?  Maybe. (It should be a midnight airing, if they dare go this idea/route!)


TV Guide reported that BBC Three has canceled their version of Being Human, with the series coming to a close at the end of this, their fifth season.

I'm a bit baffled, but the byte about the show being canceled is that BBC Three is "committed to breaking new shows and new talent" into the world.  But Being Human became so popular, that they achieved this status/goal in a rather hearty fashion, and hence, must make room for more new talent.

But knowing the show is coming to a close, show creator Toby Whithouse can pen a proper ending.

That's always good.  (Anyone remember when NBC's Vegas was canceled and they cut the show right in the middle of a solid cliffhanger?)


Can you believe that the February 13th premiere of Survivor (Survivor: Caramoan – Fans vs. Favorites) will be its 26th "edition" of the reality TV series?

Wow, so they've found 26 different locales to toss their wayward contestants into to starve and torment with games and challenges.

Well, this time around, for what I presume might be a warning bell in the background, TV Media Insights is reporting that CBS is cutting the season premiere of Survivor down from the originally programmed 2-hours to a mere 90 minutes and filling the other 30 minutes with a repeat of The Big Bang Theory.

Wait? What?

To me, this seems like something that might be worth worrying about if you're a Survivor fan.  If a show is doing well enough, no network tampers with it.  But when something looks afoul in the ratings, tampering begins.

And to make way for a repeat of a different, and as popular series, could be a signal flare.

So enjoy...  just in case.  It's been a great run for the show, if this is indeed, a warning sign.

TV News for John Corbett, George R.R. Martin!

Here's a few pieces of news for fans of John Corbett and George R. R. Martin...


First up is that TV Guide is reporting John Corbett has landed the lead role in the spin-off coming out of NCIS: LA.  And you can catch the episode that will showcase the new show, titled "Red."

His character's name will be Roy Quaid and is a former NCIS agent who is now an analyst.


I just caught over on io9 that HBO has hired George R. R. Martin for a 2-year contract which has a multi-purpose end to it.  First, to continue in his stint as co-producer for their Game of Thrones series, and secondly, they like him so much, that they're hiring him to let him develop some new shows for the pay network.

Sounds good to be George, that's for sure.  This sounds much like the creative deal that Marvel wrangled Joss Whedon into for overseeing all of the Marvel movies.  Cool!

Is 'CSI: NY' Going Away?

CSI: NY will be having an early end to it's 9th TV season this month.  They'll also be enjoying a cross-over event with CSI.  But with ratings being consistently low, and production costs too high compared to the ratings, those first two bullets I just mentioned just slid from statements to warning signs. 

Early season closures are never good and cross-overs are usually to help a show generate attention with the show they've just mingled with.  The hopes are to get viewers from the bigger show to take a gander at this other show.


Word on the street is that there's a very good possibility that this 9th season finale of CSI: NY will end up being a series finale.

And while CSI: NY will be joining CSI: Miami in the scrap heap, the original show keeps going like gang-busters in their time-slot in the all important TV viewing demographic of the 'adults 18-49' Nielsen categories.  (Those are the folks who spend more money than any other graphic, and why you see it quoted so often in TV ratings news.)


I remember when Miami was pulled... the situation was the same.  Ratings were iffy and costs too high.  The production company gave star David Caruso a chance to take a cut in pay, and that would have kept the show going.  But he chose the route of sticking to his guns and the show bowed out.  (I'm not sure why or if this opportunity wasn't presented to anyone else in the cast or crew, or if Caruso just made THAT MUCH money per episode.)

So cherish these final season 9 moments of CSI: NY gang.  They might the shows' last.

ABC Starts a Weekly Twitter Contest with "The Taste"

'Dexter,' 'Ironside,' NCIS spin-off, 'Dracula' TV news bits

There's a little bit of TV news floating around today and the last few days.  For one, Aimee Garcia has been upgraded to a series regular in Dexter.  And yes, no matter how many people tell me I have to watch it, my time has been spoken for.  Some day, I WILL get to it, starting from season 1 and on through.  But for now, I have to take everyone's word on it.  (This is going to be another Breaking Bad thing for me, I'm guessing.  I ignored Breaking Bad for the first few seasons, then just happen to catch it on Netflix and bam, I suddenly realized I had been missing the best television story/series ever written.)

NBC is looking at a remake of the old TV series, Ironside, and Blair Underwood is set to star in it.  This is an old show that used to star Raymond Burr.

While Edwin Hodge is reported to be cast for the new NCIS: LA spinoff coming soon.

Disney has renewed Dog with a Blog for a second season.  Probably does better then most blogs!

Victoria Smurfit has been cast in the upcoming NBC series, Dracula.  Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays the thirsty fanged guy.  And if you're interested, I slapped up a book review on the original book from the late 1800's.  Wow, it was actually a great read!

And The Vampire Diaries series spinoff casts Daniella Pineda in a regular role on The Originals,

'Black Beetle' and 'Star Wars' Are Fast Sellers for Dark Horse

I don't know if you've been keeping track or looking to snag copies of various Dark Horse titles, but there are a few titles that hit the stands and sell out in no time flat!

Back in early January, Black Beetle #0 sold out like it was not even there!  ""The Black Beetle: Night Shift" has sold out of its entire printing!  The Black Beetle looks to be a throwback to the serials and film noir of the late '30s and early '40s."


Then Dark Horse went on and printed a Star Wars comic,

Then Hellboy #2 went like gangbusters, and Star Wars #1 is getting a third reprinting.  GO figure!

Oh, and the latest news is that after Black Beetle #0 sell out, the next edition, Black Beetle #1 also sold out.


So if you're a Dark Horse fan, if I've learned anything here, it's that you have to be fast on your feet to get those copies in your possession!

Bruno Mars' Sisters the Subject of a New Docu-series in Development at WE TV

'Top Gun' Coming to IMAX 3D for a limited time.

Hey, if there are any serious Top Gun fans out there, you might be interested to know about the 3D IMAX screenings of the 1986 Tom Cruise hit coming out on February 8th, 2013.

Who Was That In The Calvin Klein 2013 Super Bowl Commercial?

Fans and followers know that when I'm asked to look into something for them, I'm like a dog on a bone!  And so it was, that I got a few items land in my inbox about who that guy was that was in the Calvin Klein TV commercial at the beginning of the 2013 Super Bowl. (Which I've added below.)

So be it.  I had a mission.

It turns out that the model in the skimpy skivvies is Matthew Terry and he's a Ford (Not the car) model.  He hails from Pennsylvania.

He works out four or five days a week to hone that vessel he tosses around for the camera, and focuses also on his diet to help keep things trim.

He used to be a personal trainer and has a weakness for chocolate and Double Stuf Oreos.  [menshealth.com]

He landed his Calvin Klein gig back in early 2012.

Super Bowl Clydesdale Ad Is Not for The Weak of Heart

If you were watching the Super Bowl, near the end of the 3rd quarter, or beginning of the 4th quarter, Budweiser lobbed their usual Clydesdale TV ad.

I put this ad up a few days back and I thought by now, that I would be toughened up to the emotions this ad stirs up.  A man raises his baby horse and we're shown a few personal moments between him and the horse.

Obviously, he sells his horse to Budweiser because his buddy makes the Clydesdale team.  But it's a sad parting.

Later, the man see's that the Budweiser horses will be in town and goes to see his buddy.  I'll leave the rest for you to see.  If you have any size of a heart, this pulls on those strings... and with my household, having recently lost our 13-year old lab, well, we're easy victims to the heart string story lines...


'Iron Man 3' Super Bowl Trailer And An Editorial

For a few weeks, many Iron Man 3 fans were waiting with a certain amount of anxiety, for the Super Bowl trailer.  It has new footage and after the first incredible trailer, well, fans  are needing more.

And badly.

And we waited through the first half of the Super Bowl, but nada!  Then the Halftime show.  Nada, but soon after the beginning the of the second half, the moment I saw Air Force One in the ad, I knew this was it.  I knew that Air Force One is in the movie, so I silenced the house, cranked the surround, and prepared to enjoy.

And after all that waiting, I got a 15-second teaser.  FIFTEEN seconds.  (Was it longer?  It didn't feel like it.)

At first I was a bit miffed, after all that waiting, but then my analytical mind started to review the process.  And suddenly I had a business management-like light bulb go off in my head!

First:  Statistically speaking, movies that advertise during the Super Bowl, see twice the box office performance on opening day.

Second:  At around a record setting $4 million per 30-seconds, Marvel just saved themselves an extra $2 million.

Third:  They just pointed millions of TV viewers to their Facebook page, possibly generating a huge windfall in their page's traffic.  Or at least, netting a bunch of new fans for the page.  (Right now, 12.9M folks like the page. [12,877,954])

Fourth:  I think they spent that other $2M on the screen banner that says "this game is brought to you by Iron Man 3."


From a business perspective, I think the Disney run Marvel made an excellent set of decisions as far as this powder-keg of an advertising pot of gold, called the Super Bowl.

I mean, I'm watching their fan count on the page and in just the time it took to write these last three paragraphs, they gained 2,000 likes.


But as a fan, I felt let down a bit.  I wanted another 30 or 60 seconds of a new trailer.  But be it as it may, did you notice that the (new?) armor looked a bit scuffed up already?

TV News Bites: 'Girls,' J.J. Abrams New Shows, 'Spartacus' Ratings and Spin-Off?


Spartacus Season Three, Slow Start
It looks like the TV ratings for Spartacus War of the Damned (season 3) started out to a mere 930,000 viewers on Friday night and finally hit 2.5 million viewers by the end of the premiere weekend.  STARZ calls it solid and says that's within the realm of cable subsribers.

What's curious is that despite the numbers, STARZ might still be looking carefully at the numbers because they're considering a spin-off on the Julius Caesar character, played by Todd Lasance.

And with those sparky character traits that Caesar was exhibiting in the latest episode, it could be a fun series, if STARZ follows up on it.


J.J. Abrams Two New TV Shows?

EW is reporting that Fox Network is picking up a J.J. Abrams sci-fi series centered around robot police officers.

It's a story about human cops that are partnered up with robot cops.

He also sold another series titled Believe.  It's about a girl with a gift who develops a relationship with a man sprung from prison.  He's responsible to protect her from evil forces hunting for her.

My god, Abrams is a busy guy!!!  Then again, I'm guessing any network will be more willing than ever before to be able air a show by the guy behind both Star Trek and Star Wars!


You guys know HBO renewed Girls for a third season, right?

TV News Bites: 'South Park,' 'The Americans,' 'Do No Harm'


Do No Harm Harms the Ratings

Do No Harm, the show that I thought has an interesting premise, has set a record with its series premiere... 

Apparently Do No Harm has become the lowest rated in-season scripted drama to ever premiere in TV history.  Dang, now that's a benchmark no one ever wants to set, and yet, now NBC owns that new low mark.

This record was amongst the four basic networks.


How I Met Your Mother...

Is getting one finale season, its ninth.  So next season will be the final season and they get a chance to wrap up the series properly.


The Americans Strong Premiere

Even though I missed the premiere of The Americans, and have to wait for FX's 7-day delay embargo of Comcast's 'On Demand,' apparently enough folks tuned in to the show.

4.7 million tuned into the premiere and the encore episodes (that I missed too).  The first ep pulled in 3.2 million folks, and FX is pleased as punch about that.


Uh ho for South Park!

EW is reporting that South Park is getting its seasons reduced to 10 episodes.  This is down from 14 per season.

show creators said that they picked 10 because it sounded like a good number.  Typical of those crazy guys.

Actually the showrunners are scaling back to keep the content fresh rather than trying to fulfill episode count orders.  That, I can respect.

Hey Comic-Con to-be attendees, if you're aiming to go to this year's San Diego Comic-Con International 2013, you might want to prepare your ticket purchasing prowess.  Tickets go on sale Saturday, February 16th, 2013 at 9:00 AM, Pacific Time.

And if you're even pondering the idea of pondering the idea, you know that you need to buy the tickets asap!  The 4-day passes sold out pretty fast last year and single-day passes, though they lasted a little longer, still went pretty fast.  Last year I had too many questions from hopeful parents who had last-minute ideas of taking their little ones to the event.

To be honest, this event would be a treasure of an event for little ones, but there is no way to make quick last-minute decision to take them.  If you're a parent and you think you might even consider taking your little ones, you need to buy tickets when they go on sale.

Now the 4-day packages are the most popular and go fast.  But while folks are in a tizzy grabbing the multi-day passes, this leaves the single-day passes to last a little while longer.

Thursdays and Fridays tend to go first (as part of the 4-day packages) then Saturday, and then Sundays go last.

And then there's the aspect that there were pre-sale events at the end of the 2012 for this year.  So there aren't as many tickets available as you might think!

Most importantly, buying badges is a multi-step process, one of which is creating an account first, if you don't have one at first.

'Paperman,' A Disney Animated Short Combining CGI and Hand-Drawn Art

Give it to Disney to lead the industry in various facets of entertainment.  And doing it while demonstrating an imaginative spin on first impressions on potential true love.

It's a cute and compelling little story and while watching it, the animation feels very unique to watch.

Good News: 'NCIS' Renewed for 2013-2014 TV Season

'NCIS' Renewed for 2013-2014 season

Hey NCIS fans, incredible news came out today, though, if you think about it, it's not a surprise.  CBS announced that it has extended their contract with Mark Harmon, the star and executive producer of NCIS.  In so doing, they also renewed NCIS through the 2013-2014 TV season!

That's pretty decent news gang.

NCIS has seen and is in the middle of its 10th season right now, and despite being in its 10th year, is still cranking out what CBS calls "ratings milestones."  The show is averaging 21.48 million viewers, which is 7% higher than the previous year.  And is that surprising?  If you've been following the show this season, you know with recent developments, just how compelling the story writing has been.

To me, this says that not only are fans thoroughly enjoying the series but it would seem that new fans are coming along and checking out the TV series that is one of the only scripted series that consistently conquers "reality TV" and this season, actually best all the other TV programming, including football.

And the show is licensed around the world in over 200 different markets.  Not bad for a spin-off, huh?

'Revenge' Star Lands Female Lead in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

Emily VanCamp lands role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Hey gang, if you watch Revenge on ABC, then you're very familiar with Emily VanCamp, who plays the lead.  News on the street is that Emily has landed the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

She's reportedly a love interest for Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), and franchise fans are taking guesses that this will or could be the character of Sharon Carter.

We've seen her play sultry, and yet, fully capable of good action moves also in Revenge.  I think she'll be a good addition to the cast.

(Technically, she's still in talks, but it seems to be a given.)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier logo and movie news

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters in April of 2014 and the cast so far includes Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson and Toby Jones.

The character, The Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie) will be in the story (Awesome).  If you paid attention to the character list above, you'll see that Sebastian Stan is returning, and reprising his role as Bucky.

The reference to The Winter Soldier is a story line where, after Bucky fell from that train in the first movie, he's saved by the forces of evil, brainwashed and turned into the Winter Soldier.

Dear FX Network, Oh Why Do You Torment Me With 7-Day Delays

So guess who missed the series premiere of The Americans?  Yep.  Me.  And forgetting about it, I didn't even record it.  Now with most other networks, all I have to do is wait for midnight, or a bit later and the show I might have missed will become available on my Comcast 'On Demand.'   But not FX programming.  Every single show they redistribute to On Demand, they enforce a 7-day delay.  So unless they have an encore presentation, I have to wait until next week to catch the FX series.  Much like any other FX series.

I had checked with Comcast and they made note that it is not their decision to delay the On Demand broadcast, but up to the various distributors.

The only reason that I can take a guess as why FX does this is so that it forces their live+7 viewing ratings to be funneled through their broadcast and DVR ratings.  Or it could be some competitive things between FX and Comcast.  Who knows.  All I know is that I hate this 7-day delay.

Urg., Arg!


'Warm Bodies' and 'Bullet to the Head:' What Critics I Trust are Saying

I don't think I'll be hitting up the movie theater this weekend damnit, but if I were to, my first impulse, because of the IMDb scores, would be to go see Bullet to the Head with Sylevster Stallone and Jason Momoa.

Unfortunately, critics I trust didn't go see this movie.  But other critics are calling it a moderate movie.  If you're dramatically inclined with an eye for the artistic details of a story, I'm thinking this might not be a movie for you.  Across the board, Bullet isn't being received very well, dramatically speaking.

Warm Bodies was seen by someone of like-mindedness and they called out the movie as being very good.  Across the board, critics were giving it a nod of tentative approval.

(Like-minded critics are those whom appreciate the popcorn fun movies for what they are and don't put them on the same scale as Gone with the Wind.  That's all I mean there. It's a to-may-to vs. to-mah-to thing.  I've always said movies should have different scales and then rated, not all be looked at with the same eye.)

'Super Bowl' 2013 Game Day Commercials, A Preview Of A Few

Well, like previous years, some sponsors are putting up their Super Bowl ads online.  That means non-football fans don't need to worry about tuning in to the game if you want to check it out.

Now obviously, everything will come out online the day of or the day after the game.  Particularly, I'm thinking about the movie trailers that will play during the Super Bowl.  Those being Oz, The Great and Powerful; the Tom Cruise starring movie, Oblivion; The Lone Ranger w/ Johnny Depp playing an pirate Indian.  Fast and the Furious 6, the Star Trek Into Darkness ad, tied into an app-based event, and of course, the two, count them, TWO, Iron Man 3 spots.  (I believe one of those will be a quickie that airs sometime during the pre-game show.)

Aside from that, there's the product TV commercials.  I've skipped a few and included the more interesting ones that got my attention, and kept it, after the ad ended.  I also skipped the ads for products that had more ads in the YouTube video itself.  That seemed self-deprecating to have ads in ads.

I also skipped the teasers for these teasers or trailers.  I have a short tolerance for that.  It could become an endless cycle if we're not careful.

Below is a cute Budweiser ad, Fiat delivers more sexy women, Coke has an "ok" ad and VW, after their mini-vader ad from seasons past, is a bit of a "meh!"  I also include a lengthy Doritos bit.  It's 6 minutes, with the "Doritos Girl," Ali Landry introducing the "fan" ads that are up for winning the magic spot.  (I think the world needs to start distinguishing between the regular fan and professional fans.  It's not fair to some of the regular folk that take a swing at these moments!  What do you think of that idea?)
