GRIMM, Who Was Laurie McCall

In the beginning of the February 28th episode of NBC's Grimm, titled "Revelation," there was a note saying, "In memoriam Laurie McCall."

Who was Laurie McCall?

Laurie McCall worked on and wrote for NBC's Dateline for 15 years.  It was said that she was a true asset to the show and well liked.

Her time on this planet was cut short by a cardiac arrest.

Here is a nice piece about Laurie from NBC News.

'Being Human' Ending on Syfy

Sam Huntington, Katharine Isabelle and Sam Witwer in Being Human (series finale news)

Call me slow but in a presser I just got in my inbox, I just noticed that this fourth season of Being Human on Syfy, is its last... and it's series finale is coming up in April.

Despite how this show echoed the original at first, they veered off just enough to make it more interesting or at least interesting enough to keep wanting to watch.

The original series they based this series off of was pretty good at first, but as the story elements went in directions they could not come back from, things changed, and did not change for the better.  Even though they tried.

This season, I loved where they went with Josh, and how the addition of Nora, from so long ago, worked well into the story.

I think via Being Human, many folks were introduced to what some have called "the hotness" of Sam Witwer, the delicious Meachan Rath, the smooth Sam Huntington and the sexy Kristen Hager. Plus a bevy of other hot acting talent, like Aiden's first wife!!!

But there is only so much one can do with a story of this caliber, and I'm glad they are heading out under their own accord and able to finish this story of the most unlikely set of roommates you'll ever see.

So with that said, check out the press release and farewell video below

Hi, Friends -

With the second half of “Being Human’s” 4th season set to kick off, our human-at-heart characters are about to embark on a journey full of  twists, turns and surprises that will culminate in a spectacular series finale on Syfy, Monday, April 7th.

Showrunner Anna Fricke and the talented producers, writers, cast and crew have done an amazing job bringing this show to life over the past four seasons and we sincerely thank them and the series’ production company Muse Entertainment for their hard work. They’ve saved the best for last with the final six episodes that revisit the story’s beginning, leading to a not-to-be-missed send-off for Aidan, Sally, Josh and Nora.

Comic Conventions Coming This March, 2014

The month of March (2014) seems to see the momentum of sci-fi/comic conventions start to build up.  From Sacramento, CA, to Orlando Fl., there's something for everyone around the country.

I have friends hitting up Wizard World's Sacramento event, and to be honest, loving Seattle, ECCC calls to me.  I love Seattle.

Here's next month's major events.  (Yes, there are a ton of smaller venues happening too, but I might go stir crazy if I tried to compile a complete list.) Leave a shout-out in the comments if something is going on in your neck of the woods.  I'll add it here.

Sacramento Comic Con (Wizard World) Mar 7-9, 2014
Toronto Comicon, (semi-annual) Mar 7-9, 2014
MegaCon in Orlando, FL Mar 21-23, 2014
Louisville Comic Con (Wizard World) Mar 28-30, 2014
Emerald City ComiCon (ECCC), Seattle, WA Mar 28-30, 2014

Non-Stop (2014)

Rated PG-13; 106 min   -   Action | Mystery | Thriller

An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account.

Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
Stars:    Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong'o, Anson Mount

Liam Neeson might be the go-to action guy these days, but I have a hard time watching him.  He's getting up there in the years and if you look closely, you can see how it messes with his action scenes.  Don't get me wrong, I like the guy's presentation, but dude, less action, more commanding roles please

I hope Non-Stop does at least OK for Neeson and this new director.

Son of God (2014)

Rated PG-13; 138 min   -   Drama

The life story of Jesus is told from his humble birth through his teachings, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection.

Director: Christopher Spencer
Stars: Diogo Morgado, Amber Rose Revah, Sebastian Knapp, Paul Knops

From producer Mark Burnett, who follows up his Emmy nominated mini-series, "The Bible," with a known and successful commodity.

Gareth Edwards' Godzilla (2014), Second Trailer

Gareth Edwards' Godzilla (2014), Second Trailer

Legendary Pictures has released the 2nd official trailer for Gareth Edwards' Godzilla (2014) movie.  This Godzilla movie is due out in theaters on May 16th, 2014 and unlike the last attempt at a lizard movie with the name Godzilla on it, I am sure, after seeing Edwards previous work, that this one will ROCK the 'Zilla fandom.

Godzilla 2014 concept model

Actually, I do believe the trailer will speak for itself.  It seems rather epic...

Syfy Channel's Upcoming March/April 2014 TV Premiere Schedule

Syfy Channel's Upcoming March/April 2014 TV Premiere Schedule

If you're a connoisseur of the Syfy channel, they released the schedule of their new and returning TV shows coming up in March and April, 2014.

There's a new reality series called Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge, which sounds like a compliment to what they've done with their popular series, Face Off.  If you've never seen Face Off, it's a make-up reality contest, and it's fascinating to see what these folks are capable off in their challenges, not to mention what goes into putting together something special for movies and TV.

Face Off has always been a consistently entertaining program, if you like that kind of thing.

Warehouse 13 is finishing out its run on Syfy with it's fifth and final season.

Also, the out-of-time sci-fi series, Continuum, will be coming back for its third season in Syfy's 2014 spring prime time schedules.  I was pleasantly surprised by this sci-fi series, with good stories behind many of the characters.

Check out their press release below (If you don't want to read the nitty gritty, I've highlighted show names and premiere days/dates in the text for ease of reference):

Highlights of Syfy’s 2014 Spring Programming Schedule (All Times ET/PT) MARCH

CARVERS                                       (ORIGINAL SPECIAL)

Premieres Tuesday, March 4 at 10 PM – The special Carvers follows Ray Villafane and Andy Bergholtz, two uniquely talented and quirky craftsmen, who wield knives as their artistic utensil of choice. These best friends, along with their staff of eccentric carvers, create masterpieces out of wood, ice, pumpkins, chocolate, sand, meat and anything else their clients desire. From high-end corporate events to state fairs, this crew works feverishly to design and sculpt jaw-dropping works of larger-than-life art. Carvers is produced by Coolfire Originals. Executive producers are Jeff Keane and Steve Luebbert. Aaron Bowden is the showrunner.

Premieres Tuesday, March 11 at 10 PM – In the original, one-hour special My Big Fat Geek Wedding, Syfy presents the wedding of Julian Roman and Mandie Bettencourt, geeks in love who met online while playing “Final Fantasy.” After an eight-year courtship, Julian popped the question onstage at a renaissance fair. Now the couple is excited to create a medieval fantasy style wedding that is a true reflection of their relationship and shared passions, complete with a ring bearer hawk swooping down from the sky. The couple enlists a team of experts to help bring their fantastical ideas to life, led by wedding planner Kristin Banta. With ten years of wedding planning experience under her belt, Kristin has executed everything from a Victorian Tim Burton themed-wedding to a Pirate-themed affair. Anything Kristin executes is a jaw-dropping extravaganza. To make the wedding even more spectacular, Kristin has brought Brandon Hillock to the team. Brandon is a party planner, genre expert, Cosplayer and the founder of Character Masters, a theme-driven event planning company. Kristin and Brandon will take the couple on the ride of their lives as they scout possible castle venues, choose elaborate costumes, create wondrous props, plan a swordfight, and even execute a dragon surprise that promises to make this wedding the ultimate celebration of fandom and love. My Big Fat Geek Wedding is produced by T Group with Jenny Daly serving as executive producer.

FOXY & CO                                   (ORIGINAL SPECIAL)

Premieres Tuesday, March 18 at 10PM – Popular former Face Off contestant Eric Fox (aka Foxy) is taking on Hollywood with his charmingly sinister personality and characteristic good humor in the original Syfy docu-special, Foxy & Co. Foxy appeared on season four of Face Off and became an immediate fan favorite thanks to his original style, wild imagination and mad-scientist-like creations. This all-new special follows Foxy as he opens up his very own creature effects shop with the help of fellow former Face Off contestants Nicole Chilelli, RJ Haddy and Roy Wooley. But this time, instead of competing against each other, the artists have come together as one unbelievably creative force. From creating dozens of zombies for the upcoming Brian Pulido film Zack the Zombie Exterminator to an inspirational breast cancer awareness campaign for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the team dives into each job with artistic passion and consistently hold themselves to only the highest of standards.  Komen ambassador Kimberly Williams makes a guest appearance. Foxy & Co. is produced by Mission Control Media with Michael Agbabian, Dwight Smith and James Flint serving as executive producers.

Premieres Tuesday, March 25 at 10PM – Syfy introduces ten hopeful creature designers who have come to Los Angeles with an incredible shared dream: to land a job working in Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™. The new eight episode reality competition series provides a fascinating window into the imaginative and wildly creative environment of world-class creature design, fabrication and mechanization. The series features host Gigi Edgley (Farscape) and lead judge Brian Henson, Chairman of The Jim Henson Company, who also oversees the groundbreaking work of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™. Henson is an award-winning writer, puppeteer, director and producer whose mentor was his father, the iconic genius Jim Henson. The competing creature designers are allowed unprecedented access to the world-renowned Creature Shop, gaining hands-on experience to learn every aspect of what it takes to become a master creature designer.  Following a series of elaborate challenges, only one will be awarded a prize worth up to $100,000, including the opportunity for the job of a lifetime – a contract working at the world-renowned Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™.

CONTINUUM                                     (SEASON 3 PREMIERE)

Returns Friday, April 4 at 10PM – Season 3 of Continuum amplifies the mythology, technology and the stakes of time travel to an intense and personal level. At the end of Season 2, Alec Sadler made the Earth-shattering decision to hijack Kiera's (Rachel Nichols) chance to get home, in order to save Emily, the girl he loves, from certain death. This act of desperation not only jettisoned Alec into the near past, but it condemned Kiera to incarceration by the Freelancers, who are 'collecting' time travelers in order to protect history. Now, Kiera must face the consequences of Alec's betrayal and somehow escape the Freelancers. Even if she can, has Alec's decision to time travel already changed the future in ways Kiera couldn't even imagine? What will Kiera sacrifice to ultimately survive – and how will Liber8 factor into this challenge?

News: Swamp Beast, CSI, Entourage, Getting On, Million Dollar Listing, Gotham

Are you having fun trying to dodge all the spoilers being put up for the Olympics?  It's a no-win situation, considering you can stay off the internet all day but only to have the NBC National Nightly News make a huge excuse for spoiling the telecast they're leading in for.  LOL.  Other than that, I think we're learning an interesting lesson on how to keep from getting spoiled, or how to keep your expectations low and not be surprised when self-serving web and TV entities do spoil the evening telecast.  Me, except for NBC News, which is doing wonderfully for not spoiling anything, I've temporarily dumped ABC News, CBS News, and even the US Olympic Skating page.  Just to name a few. But hey, such is the bear of the tiny world we live in.

I gotta say, there's no lacking for imagination in the pursuit of mysterious creatures in the woods or swamps.  Let's make it swamps.  They're less accessible and easier to hide things in.

"In every region of America, there are legends of strange, unidentified creatures that stretch back for centuries. In the northwest, many credible people swear to have sighted Bigfoot. In Lake Champlain, locals have sworn up and down to seeing a strange, prehistoric-like creature in the water. Down south in the swamplands it’s no different, where some of the most deep-rooted and fearsome monster stories have endured. In the new original series CRYPTID: THE SWAMP BEAST, one of America’s oldest mysteries and bone-chilling legends comes to life through dramatizations, eyewitness accounts, real news reports and expert interviews. The series premieres Monday, February 24 at 10PM ET/PT."

New CSI Spin-off coming soon.

CBS is going to air an episode of CSI that focuses on cyber crimes, and if it's a big enough hit, they may use the ep as a back-door pilot for a new CSI spin-off series.

The Entourage movie started principal filming this week.

Getting On has been renewed by HBO, for a short, six-episode second season.

House's Lisa Edelstein has a new gig.

New Movies in Theaters This Week, 2-21-14

New Movies in Theaters This Week, 2-21-14

To be honest there's only a few new, non-limited new movies coming out this week.  They are...

Opening This Week - February 21

Pompeii (2014)

Rated PG-13 105 min   -   Action | Adventure | Drama | History | Romance

A slave-turned-gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, who has been betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, he must fight to save his beloved as Pompeii crumbles around him.

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Stars:  Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

It sounds like Paul Anderson is taking the best premises of Gladiator and The Titanic, and meshing them together.  All without his Resident Evil movie zombie monsters.  (I presume)  But PG-13 does have its downfall.

- - -

3 Days to Kill (2014)

Rated PG-13 113 min   -   Action | Crime | Drama | Thriller

A dying Secret Service Agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.

Director: McG
Stars:    Kevin Costner, Hailee Steinfeld, Connie Nielsen, Amber Heard

McG is known for his epxlosive action... and moderately decent handling of story.  But can he spit out a decent combo here?
